It isthe general impression that her advices will be of a very favorable character. We have no doubt ail the markets will show an improvement, both in aciiv ty and in prices. This impression is based principally upon the anticipation that the London Money Market has been very much relieved by the stoppage of the drain of bullion from the bank of England, for shipment to the United States, An improvement in the money market would, of course, create © corresponding improvement in all the departinents of business, The steamer is anx- lously looked for. We have four days later intelligence from Liverpoo) by the ship Rainbow. Breadstuffs have advanced and Cotton declined. Full reports of the markets to the 8th of May wiil be found in our columne. The Hibernia will bring but eleven days later. "The Departure of the Britannia, Bosvow, June 1, 1847. Tho mail steamship Britannia left this afternoon for Halifax and Liverpool, with semi-montbly mail and ninety-six passengers for latter, and vight for former port. The mail consisted of about four thousand let- ters, and newspapers innumerable. The largest semi- monthly mail ever despatched from Boston, One prin- cipal reason why the mail was not more equally divided between this ship and the Washington, also from New York to-day for England, is the exorbitant postage in the Washington, demanded by our government. | Atnany, June 1—12 M. | The anti-rent convention, which mot in this city yes- terday, nominatedHorace Dresser, of New York, as theix fourth candidate for Judge of the Court of Appeals. The necessity for epening diplomatic relations with other nations, will be doubtless increased by tho effect of the newand enlarged policy pursued by the present pontiff, whose design appears to be, among | other wise schemes, to put the commercial interests of hiscountry on a solid basis. There {s no doubt the ad- | vances of tho Pope to tho establishment of diplomatic intercourse between the two countries, would be cor dially received by our government. In this eountry he has the warmest sympathy in his noble efforts or the ameliorati.n of the condition of his subjects,in flance of the all-powerful opposition of despotic Austria The very best results to this country, and the pontifical States, would follow the establishment of official rela- tions between them. The absurd prejudices, which, since tho reformation, have restrained the English go-. vernment from holding diplomatic intercourse with Rome, do not ebtain in our country. America is not, as has been erroneously asserted on a late occasion, a pro- testant country. It would not be more absurd to call it a catholic country. No denomination is in the ascen- dant, nor ever will be. ‘There is, therefore, no bar to our intercourse with Romo. ‘The regiment of light cavalry now on its way to the eout of war, is just the species of force adapted to Geno, ral Scott's present emergency. They will keep open the communication from Vera Cruz to Head Quarters, and protect the trains on thelr way te the main body of the army. If Congress had earlier autnorised the orga nization of the ten regiments, the eommunication be- tween Matamoras and Monterey weuld never have suf- fered a day’s interruption. Tho cavalry regiment ts made up of as good materie/ as any in the army, regular | or volunteer. Among its company oflloers are some of the most accomplished military men in the United States. Among these is Captain Duff, whose military skill and | experience as a cavalry officer, renderhhim fit as any man in the service for the command of » regiment. Light } cavalry is an arm of tho service from the absence of which has proceeded much of the embarrassment of Ge. neral Taylor. ‘To thy samo cause may be attributed the successful attacks of the enemy on our trains, | stragglers from the camp, who have from time to time | been cut off by the stealthy band of the assassin. | ‘There is no truth in the statement that the gueiile | system adopted by the Mexicans will also be adopted b | us. Weare strong enough to forbear from its use, Our == | light cavalry will clear tho ronds of the guerillas, but ft | Is beneath us to pursue their murderous system of pick- | ing off men singly or in small parties, when not strong | enough toresist us. A dignified reialiation, recogniaed | by the laws of warfare, will be inflicted—but the knife | and the lasso are not for us. At the same time, means | will, of course, be adopted for breaking up those bands | of cut-throats and marauders—the Mexican guerillas | have not yet risen above that character. I see it stated that General Taylor will not be suffered to proceed to San Luix Potosi, His delay will be bat temporary. The dispositions already made by the War Department, will place under his command thirteon | thousand troops before the middle of July, and by the sume time, General Scott will have at his disposal twenty thousand. General Taylor has dissuaded the adminis- tration from sending the army into the interior by way of San Luis Potosi, as, he gays, it is of no manner of use. Mr. Marcy has allowed him a large discretion since the | commencement of the war; but as it was long in con- templation, indeed from the beginning, to invade Mex} | co from two points—Matamoras and Vera Crus—and as | General Taylor has since expressed his willingness, and | even hin desire to advance, the expedition has not been | abandoned. It will be commenced as soon as practica ble. GALVIENSIS. | | | Wasninotox, May 31, 1947 Things in the Capital. We took a look into the departments this morning, but found nothing worth ecommunieating. Many of the clerks were receiving their pay, in gold and silver. One of them, a few moments afterwards, stepped over into a lottery office and purchased several tickets, to try his | luck. Around tho Treasury Department were hawks, or | constables, ready to pounce upon clerical debtors. It ie @ nuisance and a disgrace to the Government to retain | men who have to be hunted up on the last or first day of every month to satisfy creditors. In fact, we know of | Individuals who lived within the bounds of their in- | comes, as mechanics, but who, as clerks, find their sala- | ries inadequate to their support. The only remedy, im | such cases, is to go back to fe former occupations. As to Mexican matters, We are becoming weary of them. Both parties are anxious for peace. | pray that it may soon result. | The Hon. Our last brief | sketch brought all hands up to Gaston, on the Roanoke | near the dividing line between North Carolina and | Virginta. For the whole day, at intervals of ten miles, at the wood and watering stations, the President has had to go out and shake hands with a multitude of the farming interest, renowned for their powerful grip ; and at din | ner, at one of thes stopping places, he was nearly sut- focated by the pressure of the throng. | The people of Raleigh received him and the Secretary of the Navy, and company, with military hanors; and after escorting them around the town, and around the capitol, they were landed at the Fagle Hotel, in the por- tico of whieh, Mr. Green, of Chapel Hill University, in a regular speech, tendered the President and Seerewry the honors of their Alma Mater, to which epeesh the President having felicitously responded, the people dis- persed. and the military were dismissed.
