Ihave just heard of several nominations of Judges for the Third Judicial District. The ultra fanatical whig eonvention assembled in this city to-day, and vomi- | nated Messrs. J. I have not learned the names of the remaining two that were by the democratic convention. Cudncr or Saveatinc.—For some, time, com- pees have been made to the appraisers in tic Custom House, by merchants of this city, that the firmof E. Jacobs & Co., wholesale importers wnt dealers in cutlery and fancy goods, Nos. 1 and % Kiluy street, were selling goods at such low rates as to induce the belief that they must have been smuggled. Stmilss complaints ave boon made in New York. where ihe game firm haye also been engaged in business. In cou- sequence of these complaints, an agent was sent to exe, mine their stock of goods. whereupon it was discovered that the articles were of much higher value than repre- sented in the invoice. Each package. it ia supposed, had a few articles on the top ara oe with | the invoice, while beneath were artictes of much greater value, and which ought to pay a higher duty, A. letter enclosing $60, with Spromise of mom, if the matter could be hushed up, was sent to the person engaged im ferreting out the fraud, by one of the persons implicated. One of the firm bas bern in Europe, and itis believed that to a large amount have been smuggled into Boston and New Yerk, as sbove stated, during the last six months. A fash- ionable hotel in this city, has recently been furnished with an extensive assortment of hardware, it is said, from the store of the smugglers. On Saturday last, Elisha Jacobs, one of the firm, was brought before Chas. L. Woodbury, Esq , U.S. Commissioner, for examination and was held to answer at the present term of the Cir- cuit Court. the bail being fixed at $2,600. ‘A complaint has also been entered against Francis Jacobs, alleging that ho has sworn to false entries, and attempted to bribe a public officer; but, on account of his indisposition, Col.
