“wish to make her ceperaiie and to elevate her people nd hi ment toe ble standard among civilized nations for the credit of republican rinoiples though we may foreshorten her boundaries, let us not dis ‘We opine the administration looks to the sustaining the Mexican republic under one government, barring that portion of soil which may fall to the United States ina treaty of peace. A line detaching from the central government an independent territory, on the plan of Mr. Soule, would be but a repetition of the old schedule of ro-andexation, very easy and simple in the commence- ment, but extremely expensive, troublesome, and com- plex im the end. Senor Atocha is still in the city. We suppose he is wwaiting further despatches to Mexico. At one time the private Secretary of Santa Anna, it may be considered 4s one of the peculiar vicissitudes of fortune, la rk- ably attendant upon the chequered history en. that he should so shortly afterwards ed nnn ‘himself mment of in a position of equal confidence with the gor the Uulted States, At all events, we are ieeatified to be assured that Senor Atocha did the assigned duty as bearer of overtures of peace to Mexico, in a manner per- fectly satisfactory to Mr. Buchanan and the President, notwithstanding the terms were so indignantly rejected by the government of Gomez Farias, governinent only temporarily sustained, in the absence of Santa Anna, by foree of arms. Throughout the whole of the extensive line of opera- tions of the American army, success attends its every movement, until at length it would appear that it has only to march forward and occupy without resistance, the remaining territories of the Mexicans. In this state of things we expect a speedy and honorable peace— honorable to us, because we can demand it; honorable to Mexico because we can afford to be magnanimous Bacrimons, April 22, 1847. The Tlumination—The Dancers—Effect of the Foreign News—Donations for Iretand and Scotland, ge. ‘The illumination of the city last night, In honor of the Amoriean victories, was quite'a grand spectacle, Bar- num/’s Hotel, and the theatres, with the different news- paper offices, were the main point of attraction, each having large transparencies of the different battl ‘The splendid dwelling of Reverdy Johnson, our Senator, was also splendidly illuminated. The Viennoise dancers continue to be the town talk. ‘Their performance exceeds any thing ever witnessed or voneeived. ‘The steamer Mary Waehington, which arrived here yesterday from Frederickaburgh, Va., brought a do- nation of 1000 bags of corn, being the contributions of that city and vicinity forthe suffering poor of Ire- land and Scotland. ‘The news by tho Cambria reached hero Suieiar about 12 o'clock, and caused “great excitement in the commercial circles. Previous to its arrival, Howard street flour was held firmly at $7, whilst City Mills had a tendency still higher, consequently the news saved as much dismay as if a bomb shell had lit in their midst.— ‘The excitement during the remainder ofthe day was too great for business, and nothing was done, all anxious- ly waiting for private letters and fuller accounts, Puaveventa, April 5, 1847, A Life Lost. Will you have the goodness to insert in your paper, that Mr. E. Huntly, formerly from Sag. Harbor, was knocked overboard from a coal"boat in Delaware Bay, on the 4th inst., and was lost. My informant was ally acquainted with him, and wished the above to published in your paper. Yours, IRA ©, SPENCER On the llth instaat, Alfred Soward, one of the most influential citizens of Dover, Ky., and a member of the Mason county court, was assassinated about 11 o’clock at night, while reading in his bed. He was in a sitting posture, when some villain fired at him with a gun loaded with four balls, three of which took effect upon his body At latest accounts there was but little hopes of his re- covery.
