Several dif- a have already occurred in consequence of the custom being observed at our hotel tables, which have been produetive of much ill feeling and angry debate, and if persisted in may lead to the effusion of blood [Probably from the nove:] ‘A. Sterling exchange was in demand on Saturday, at six per cent premium, with every appearance of an early rise. ‘The general expectation 4s that our good State stocks will be sent back, under the influence of the Bank of England, which would pretty effectually turn the eur- rout of spe It is elso rumored in Wall stroet that somespecto operators havo ordered remittances to be raade ta New York and Massachusetts stocks, the first of which was, at the latest dates, selling in London at 8, and the latter at 90 per cent If this be done, the awount of epecie to arrive by the steamer, now fully due, will fall far short of what is generally supposed. It is also anticipated that much disappointment will be occasioned by “the action of the Bank of England, a there wax at the last accounts eyery probability of the determination to confine the’ dircounts to fourteen day paper, being strietly adhered to, The clject of this mervoment evidently was to throw American paper out of the market, and to restrict ax much as possible the operations of speculators in American produce. ‘There isnodoubt but that the Bank of England will make great efforts to reduce the drain of precious metals for exportation to thiscountry, and there is no more effect- ual method then to shut out long paper of those houses oagaged in the American trade. ‘The act recently passed by the Legislature of Mlinois, extends till the Ist November, i448, the time for wind- up the ofairs of the State Bank, If they are not closed at that date, the governor is required to appoint three trastess, whose duty it shall be to take charge of all the aerots of the said bank, and wind up its affairs, they botny goverued in doing so by the provisions of the set of i845, All cortificates issued by the bank in pursn- ance of tho provisions of the [att mentioned act, and all notes ined by it, and in the hands of the County School Co sioners, or treasurers of school districts, are to draw ix per cont interest after the 4th March next, After ghe wane date, the debtors of the bank are exowptedfrom the paymont of interest on debts now due to the bauk. Atmany, April 19, 1847 A petition was received for the sale of Washington Park, Brooklyn, The judicial district bill was called up, that the Senate do adhere to their bill. The motion to adhere was withdrawn, to allow a mo- tion to be made that the Senate insist upon this bil An amendment was then offered, that the Senate ro- cede from its vote of non-concurrence with the amend- ment of the House to the bill. Lost The motion to insist was then adopted—so the vitality of the bill is still preserved, and the matter is now in the hands of the House. Mr. Hannrs made a speech on the bill to continue the public works, ‘The carial bill was taken up, but without a question. Soverul other bills were put forward, among them the bill to puntsh frauds at auction sales. Amembly. Weare firmly of the opinion that peace is hand, and we should not be anticipated if an extra sion of the Senate were yet called to clinch the while the iron is hot. th MAHEEK The Glory of the War. The glory of this war is not #o much in the provooa- tions to the war—the causes of the war, and the origin of the war, though all these are natural enough, as the results of pre-existing causes. Nor ia its glory to be | measured by the brilliant vietories of Taylor, nor in the formidable and overwhelming descent of Seott upon Vera Cruzand the Castle—nor in the general spirit of humanity and magnanimity of the army. We can scarcely find a sufficient satisfaction for the war in all ings. We look for its glory to the results yet to ho re-organization of the government of Mexico, when an enduring peace establishment—in the ntroduetion of the commerce of the world, and the acta which distinguish civilized nations—in the elevation of the masses of the people—in the diffusion of education, and the principles of religious liberty—in the general awakening of the country to enterprises of profitable im- | provement, and in the transit canal across the isthmus | between Huasacunico and Tehuantepec for the steamers | between Europe and the United States plying to China, Southern Asia and Australia. HURRAH Wasnixoro, April 18, 1847 | Mexico—Important if True. | Any one who has visited the city of Mexico, will re- collect that while in the distance it is surrounded by mountains from ten to seventeen thousand feet above the #ea, all around the city—in the broad and rich val | ley, there are lakes and ponds, and a very respectable sized lake, Tescuco, flanking the town. It is also known that in the rainy season, the city, from its flat location, is overflown; and that in former times it was subject, during the months of July and August, to inundations from the surrounding lakes, Of late years this has been prevented by a large canal, which serves to drain off the rurplus waters. ‘Therefore, that is to say, by a dam across said canal, and the opening of other passages, tho city may be submerged. ‘This may be an important cle- ment to Gen, Scott, should he continue his march upon the city. He may submerge it into a surrender, instead of troying the place by bomb shells, He may be able to drown them into a capitulation, instead of. shelling them tg terms, The only difficulty would be the oeenpation of the city after it should be thus reduced, But the question of a march upon “the halls of the Monteru- mas” awaits the fnal decision. me SANTA AN inoton, April 18, 1847. ter. The great case, which Messrs. Webster, Dallas, Ber- rien, Gilpin, and T. L. Smith are prosecuting before the Secretary of the Treasury, to wit: the case of Sibbald of Mlorida, who claims indemnification for damages incur red in the Florida war, to the extent, as one of his advo cates informs us, of $1,700,000, but, according to street reports, of $2,700,000—this great case i# still undecided, and still detains Mr, Webster, and may detain him for & week longer. He ix, however anxious to get off on Mon day or Tuesday, and may succeed.
