Wasmineton, April 15, 1847 On Dits. Between Brown's Hotel and the Capitol they are tearing up the great avenue, root and branch, and replanting it in paving stones. Peter Ger- man, the good man who has smoothed the path of Congress to the grave, furnishes the cobble stones, and has employed all the little furmers for ten miles round in gleaning-the country for the boulders. Meantime they are proceeding im the work of lighting the Capitol and grounds with gi We had thought there was already a superfluity of gas in the Capitol. General Tom ‘Thumb has gone southward, he and his associates having cleared for their three days in Washington at least a thousand dollars. Large dividend for so small a capital. Father Ritchie claims Gen. Taylor as a demo- crat. Should’nt wonder if both parties would run him. What a curious state of things. The democrats in Congress denounced Genervi Taylor as inefficient, and yet they claim the honor of his victories. The whigs denounce the war as atrocious, yet they claim the honor of all its results. How are we to have an understand- ngs How shall we opi the difference ? re learn that Gen. Dromgoole is campaigning in Virginia in defence of the admission of Santa Anna into Mexico, on the ground that he was pledged not to adopt the guerilla system, but to fight pitched battles, and make a peace when fair- beaten out. The best reason, hse Arse that of the President, whose object was to kick up a row with Paredes, and drive the Mexicans to terms, by compelling Santa Anna, in order to secure his power, to sue for peace. The prospect is that the job will turn out not so bad aspeculation af- ter all, especially with the ship canal across from ‘Wassaqualeo, or, asthe Mexicans spell it, Huasacualco. Mr. Richard S. Coxe is giving a series of ad- mirable papers in the Union on the Mexican in- demnities, in reply toa late speech of Mr. Pen- dleton, of Virginia, in the House. Wait till et bell rings. Wasninoron, April 15, 1847. U. S. War Steamers. The government has built a lot of war steam- ers under various contracts and experiments, and with scarcely an exception, they have all failed, and have been constantly subjected to re- pairs and alterations for their improvement. Perhaps the Princeton is the best of them all, and she draws a depth of six or seven feet more than is necessary for a ship of her tonnage; her draught being about twenty-one feet. The Mis- sissippi, in a single shot may be dismantled, as her wheels and machinery are above the water line The Polk, revenue cutter, is now here un- dergoing alterations, &e., &. Perhaps the plan for an experiment of Mr. E. F. Aldrich, of New York, is about as good as any fora fair trial, without incurring a hazard of an useless expenditure.
