the river Pequest, and will afford fifty fect head and full, and is equal to 1770 horse power, und if applied in the best manner for manufacturing, it would be sufficient to manufacture 200,000 barrels of flour per year. Oxford furnace also possesses a valuable water power, which is applied to saw and grist mills and iron works. — ‘The product of those works yearly, is three hundred tons of stove plates, and five hundred tons of pig iron, und is rapidly increasing. ‘The Muscanctong also sup- plies a yery valuable water power at different points, besides those furnished by its tributaries. “There is within three miles of Easton, including South Easton, which has grown up within the last ten years, and is rapidly increasing’ in wealth and impor- tance, eighteen merchant and grist mills, four saw mills three oil mills, two tanneries, three foundries, four dis- tilleries, two furnaces, one rolling mill and wire factory, three blast furnaces, and cotton factory, all in success- ful operation, At South Easton there is a vast water Power, sufficient to greatly increase the number of ma- nufuctories ; besides which, the Lehigh has a fall of two hundred fect between the Water Gap and Easton, « distance of twenty-five miles, which would dmit of any additional water power that might be required. The surrounding country is exceedingly fertile and well adapted to raising all kinds of grain, which is the prinei- pal product. The excess of flour over and above the home consumption, that is sent to market annually from Easton und its vicinity, execeds 110,000 barrels, and 50,- 000 barrels corn meal. At Easton alone there 1s manu- + factured 90,000 barrels of flour, 14,000 barrels of whiskey, 000 tons of pig metal, and 800 tons refined iron, And in Northampton and Lehigh counties, 200,000 barrels of ‘lour and 18,000 barrels of corn meal annually. ‘The county of Northampton, in Pennsylvania, which Vounds on the Delaware, for a great distance, has 181 stores, 60 flouring mills which manufacture upward of 387,500 barrels of flour and corn meul for market yearly, ‘There are also in it 7 oil mills, 10 tanneries, 7 distillories, 3 blast furnaces, 6 forges, 2 trip-hammer mills, and a variety of smaller iron works, one gun factory, numer- ous saw mills, bark and country grist mills, clover mills, and various manufactories of saddlery, hate, &e. &c. The Amount of merchandise received at Easton, for that place and the adjacent country, annually, exceeds $1,000,000— and the exports in butter, lumber, castings, bar iron, slate, machinery, &e. &e., are very considerable ; it also exports upwards of 1,800 tons of pork annually, besides a arge amount in fat cattle, sheep, &c. ‘The exports of Northampton may be fairly estimated at 50,000 tons, and her imports are also very considerable, amounting in plaster, salt, and fish alone, to 6000 tons, besides the va- rious articles of merchandise demanded for its consump- tion. “The completion of the White’s Haven and Wilkes- burre railroad, connecting the Lehigh with the Susque- hannah river, has opened a new field of trade, of vast importance to this road. This connection unites the three anthracite coal fields together, and with New York city by a shorter route than any other known. When tho North Brauch Canal shall form ajunction with the New York State line, at Athens, Tioga Point, and the western end of the New York and Erie railroad shall have been completed, a continuous line of canal and railroad communication will be formed to Dunkirk on Lake Erie, some seventy-five miles shorter than any other route, thereby rendering it the most favorable, and must eventually secure a very large proportion of the trade and travel to and from the lakes and great west. By this route, bituminous coal can be transported from ‘Towanda, in Pennsylvania, to New York, cheaper than by any other. ‘The three coal fields united as above, are estimated to contain upwards of 150,000 acres of land, and 3,000,000,000 tons coal.’? “The Delaware, Lehigh, Schuylkill and Susquehanah railroad, chartered in 1846, when completed, will become a great auxiliary to this rond. (Its route passes through Northampton and Lehigh counties, and connects Easton with the valley of the Schuylkill, the Pottsville coal fields, as well as the Mauch Chunk and Hazleton coal tields, and the Susquehanna valley, by a junction with the Beaver Meadow and Catawissa railroads.) There is in this. rich agricultural district, through which this road passes, thirty-seven flouring mills within five miles of the lino of the road, exclusive of those within ten | miles of Easton, capablo of manufacturing over 300,000 barrels of flour annually, besides various oil and grist millla,’? Should the company deem it expedient to go immedi- ately into thé-transportation of coal, the profits would be greatly increased at once. It is confidently believed that | ‘the transportation of coal alone over this road, would | pay a handsome dividend on its cost, without the aid of receipts from passengers, and other freights. Contracts cun be made with responsible individuals for as much | coal as can be transported oh the road, as soon as it is completed to Faston. The Morris Canal would be put completely Aors du combat by the extension and speedy completion of this | 4 road, and the inducements for the construction of tho | Une at once are so overwhelming, that we see nothing to prevent an immediate subscription for tho full amount Toquired. It is a very extraordinary circumstance that this city has been so long shut out from a more direct communication with the northern part of Pennsylvania, | A more feasible route than the one alluded to above does | not exist, and for a trifling amount wo can open a very large trade with ono of the most extensive agricultural | | districts in this section of the country. DONIPHAN IN POSSESSION OF EL PASSO. THE ARTILLERY NOT Al ARRIVED. CONTEMPLATED MOVEMENT ON CHIHUAHUA, : Particulars of Morin’s Victory. Captain Headley Killed. AN OTHER BATTLE GoIne ON, deer, den, die. We aro indebted to the Philadelphia North American for the following intelligence :— The accounts from New Mexico which have reached us, are from El Passo to the 12th January, and Sante Fe | to February 3a. Col, Doniphan was still in possession of El Paswo, wait- ing to be reinforced by the coming up of his expected ar- \ tillery. As soon as it arrived it was his intention to | move directly upon Chihuahu: At El Passo nothing had beon known of the change of € ‘Wool's position, and Col. Doniphan was still under the impression that they were co-operating. James Magoffin was still at large at Chihuahua, and had not been tried for treason. ‘The battle fought by Captain Morin and his command, | took place 25 milew from Santa Fe. At the first volley discharged by our troops, 36 of the Mexicans were killed the rest were thrown into confusion and precipitately | fled to the mountains. Capt. Morin followed up his advantage with decision, pursued the enemy, and devastated the valley of the Moro, burning everything in his path. ‘The people, ter- rified, fled to the mountains also, where death, in the | shape of starvation, awaits them—a horrible but just re- tribution for the senguinary massacres which they effeet- ed, and the wide-spread insurrection which they con- templated. When Mr. Caldwell, who brought the express from | Santa Fe to St. Louis, loft the former place, he heard | heavy reports of artillery in the direction of Moro, and ” | doubticss another battle was progressing—but no par- ticulars were received. Mr, C, thinks that the Mexicans must have been beat- en worse "than beforo, and our troops wero fully prepar- ed, flushed with success, burning for revenge, and in high apirite. At the first battle Capt. Headley was killed, and seven wounded’on our side. Nothing has been heard of Capt. Sublette or his} where- abouts. AFFAIRS IN ALBANY. LEGISLATIVE PROCEEDINGS. Senate. Atwany, April 7, 1847 Mr. Bracu, by consent, reported a bill making appro- | proprintions for constructing » double set of lift loeks | om the canal, from Albany to Syracuse ; for the on- largement of the canal from Syracuse to Rochester, &e Mr. Brexstax brought in a bill, providing for the par | | setaietghica, of country bank notes in the city of New York. After some other business of but little importance, the Senate adjourned. Assembly. Auwany, April 7, 1847. Mr. Caxvinn brought in a bill to repeal the excise Jaw of 1846. ‘This is majority report. It wus Inid « | the table until the minority report could be made, Mr. Consweit. reported a bill making appropriation: for the improvement of the canals and the prosecution of the public works. ‘The;ill relative to the commissiouers of the code and practice came up, and was disposed of by the House re- ceding from some of its amendments, and concurring in others of the Senate. So the bill {s passed. ‘The report on the New York and Erie Railroad loce- | tion came up for discussion, and at the conclusion of « speech by Mr. Wright in favor of the Northern route + the House adjourned. Auwaxy, April? —12 M _The river is not yet open, as it was yesterday antici pated. a * BY THE MAILS. Wasuineton, April 5, 1847. The Plan of Future Operations ia Mexico. Since the adjournment of Congress, Mexico has again obstinately refused to negotiate for peace. This refusal came from the administration of | Gomez Farias, supposed to have been much more favorable to the United States than the church or central party. Had Gomez Farias continued in power, there would have been little prospect of a speedy peace. What would have been the determination of the church and central parties remains to be seen. They entertain for thie United States the most bitter hostility, and a concentration of the forces of Scott and Taylor on the Mexican capital, may yet become necessary, before the dominant party consent to sue for pen hata combined movement of Scott and Tay- lor could now reach the capital, is at least rea- sonably certain—and such will be the inevitable consequence of a further protraction by Mexico, of her present aimless and bootless struggle. Be- fore, however, any movement be made upon the capital, a short time will be allowed to whatever party may be in power in that country, to reflect upon the recent defeats of their army, in the hope that a calm and deliberate survey of the present condition of the country, may induce the Mexi- n government to enter into negotiations. If wie- dom prevailed in their councils the result would be beyond a problem; but when we see“adverse factions spilling each other's blood in civil strife inthe streets of the capital, at atime whe armies are marching upon them, and th vided energies are necessary to the defence of their country, no human foresight can predict what such a people will do. One thing is certain—if Mexico will not now rnter into negotiations, we shall be compelled eventually to take and hold her eapital. Mean- time, we shall take possession of all the ports, and us rapidly as possible open a way into the inte- rior for the transit of our imports, and at the same time secure the passage across the isthmus, from seato sea. In this way, we shall open a com- munication with our forees in California and on the Pacific static From New York to Son Francisco, in California, will not be more than 4 four weeks’ voyage The most energetic combined movements of our land and naval forees will be made for the purpose of bringing the war to a speedy conely sion, ‘The army, as I heve said, will strike for the capital. General Taylor and General Scot, by different rontes, perhaps, if found practicable, orif not, by the same, will seek the vecupation o! the city of Mexico. The navy, released trom thr arduous and w ) vor ir undi- asant duties of a blockade, wil! be employed in seizing the other ports, and ba’ rassing the coast generally. Within the ne sixty UALVLENSIS,
