The vernal equinox seems to be paying us a flying visit, as or two days pust we have had alinost continuous rains, and the appearances overhead, at present, indicate that more of “the same sort” of weather is at hand. Quite an important arrest was made, yester- | day, of two counterfeiters, calling themselves Charles Jenkins and Daniel Brown, charged with | pane counterfeit dollars and half dollars. They ad passed through several of eur stree.s, buying tobacco, segars, shoe strings, tape, &c. at every store, and passing off these counterfeit preseni- ments of Yankee coin, and were shortly after ar- rested. On searching them, t pockets were with small change and the trifles they had eae though but one of the false coin was found onthem. They were committed, and a search ‘was yesterday made for their stopping places, when one was found to havea mite stopping ata respectable boarding house, and the other was stopping at one of our hotels. On searching the rooms they occupied nothing was found in Jen- kins’s room, but in Brown’s room, between the bed and mattrass, was found a bag containing what purported to be $150 worth of this base coin, in @ rough and unfinished state. about the best representation of gee coin that [ have ever seen, as it rings well, and can only be detected at night by Lay toy than it should be. The unfinished state of the coin leads to the suppositivn that a manufactory is not far off.— They last came from Washington. Ryal is be- lieved to_be the right name of the man who calls himself Jenkins. The officers attached toher will, therefore, be detained here ina state of “‘ masterly inactivity,” while their more fortu- nate competitors on the line of promotion, will have an opportunity of doing their country some service. The ship John Welsh has sailed for Londonder- ry, having been entirely filled with contd pations received by the Irish Relief Committee of this ci! The report was agreed to unanimously. BY THE MAILS. Axsany, March 23, 1847. The Army Intelligence—The Judicial District Bill —The Academical Institutions—The Emigrant Bill. The intelligence from the army, which reached this city on Monday, excited great apprehension for the fate of Major General Taylor ; though the confidence in that brave officer seems to be un- limited, yet the perilous position into which he has been thrown with inadequate forces, has caused fears for his safety. The collegiate institutions of this State suffered largely to-day. The usual annual appropriations to several first class colleges were reduced one | half. This was the unadvised act of the House, which I am assured will not receive the approval of the Senate. The judicial district bill remains in the hands of the conference committees; the House commit- | tee have not made a single proposition for the ad- | justment of the difficulty, other than the, bill it passed the House; the Senate committee have made a number of efforts to compromise, but they have been rejected. ‘The New York delegation will not, in my judg- ment, have the bravery to resist the ‘mandaie 1s- sued from the Tabernacle on Monday evening in Tegard to the disposition of the emigrant bill, | believe no turther objection will be offered to its amendment.
