TO THE LATEST MOMENT. TELEGRAPHIC. HIGHLY IMPORTANT INTELLIGENCE FROM T= SEAT OF WAR. CONFIRMATION OF THE REPORTED BATTLE, GEN. TAYLOR AT MONTEREY. Loss of Artillery at the Rinconada | Requisition of General Taylor for Ten Begi- | ments of Troops. MOVEMENTS OF THE ENEMY. Anticipated Attack on Mata- | moras, PREPARATIONS FOR DEFENCE, Sic. dec. dite Wasnineton, March 22—10 P. M. The. steamer Palmetto has arrived at New Or- leans, bringing one day later intelligence from the Brazos. ‘The previous accounts of the great battle are confirmed, but nothing authentic has been re- ceived as to loss on either side. The Brazos was under mertial law, and all the ‘American citizens enrolled and armed. An express from the mouth of the Rio Grande arrived at the Brazos on the 7th inst , announcing that 1700 of the enemy, under Canales, were marching on that place, and that the citizens had no arms, not even a musket. Arms andam- munition were sent to them. A large body of the enemy was about Matamo- ras, and an attack was hourly expected there. Gen. Taylor had made good his retreat to Mon- terey. An attack was hourly expected at that place. He lost six pieces of artillery in the Rin- conada pass. He could no doubt hold out at Monterey as long as supplies lasted, but all communication with him was cut off. Gen. Taylor has made a requisition on Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, for ten re- giments to be sent forthwith to the Rio Grande. Nothing by the Western mail. Partapetenia, March 22—7 P. M. You'will have received the news from the arnay. if it should be confirmed by later intelligence, due by the next mail from the South, we may well an- ticipate the destruction of the army of the North. There must be some truth in these numerous and coincident reports as to the main factof a battle between Gen. Taylor and Santa Anna. It affords us pleasure to state that Col. John C. Hays, of the Texas Rangers, or, as he is more nay: a known among his ‘saree! “* modest b ys,”” leaves this city to-da for Ti ‘exas, with sero to raise a regiment twelve months men, pases jompany of whieh are to be mounted Chero- ees. The jury in the case of H. H. Smith, indicted for forgery, were to-night diacharged—they not being able to agree in a decision upon the first indicument. A new jury, we suppose, will be janelled upon the remaining indictments. ‘o-night Mr. G. F. reese at rt Odeon Olym- took his benefit. A lady ef. Alexan- dria appeared for the “ ee ume on any stage,” in a scene inthe ‘Lady of Lyons”—that scene where the Prince, alias the Gardener, describes his palace and its accessories. The young lady tailed ; but we sappate she stands “discharged cured” of her spell for the stage. A young man of this city entered against Brewn in a recitation of the opening soliliquy of Richard III., the audi- ence to decide which of the competitors was en- titled to the premium by the strength of the ap- plause. Mr. Marselet first recited the extract, in a deep, sonorous, warlike tone, admirably adapt- ed to the case. He was applauded, with a reser- vation. Next came Brown, in the same recita- ton He came ont. in % long-tailed coat and check pantaioons, began in so high that everybody taught tr be ‘was going to carica- ture the , which would have made a decided hit ; but he was in earnest, and read the piece through with printed accu 5 but there was a keen comic twang in his voice, in spite of him- self. The jury, however, being packed for the occasion, their verdict was rendered in favor of Brown ; otherwise, Brown did his characters in capital style. Generally, the characters of the evening were sustained to the entire satisfaction of the audience. Ww. any present Wasnineton, March 21, 1847. Critical State of Affairs in Mexico. Nothing later directly from the seat of war. They are awaiting at New Orleans the next ar- rival from the Gulf coast. Thatauthentio advi- es will at least confirm the forward movement northward of Santa Anna, and the retreat of General Taylor toward Monterey, is universally believed ; but there is a strong confidence if the ability of General Taylor to save himselt against all odds, and any disparity of force that may be brought against him . The published correspondence of Gen. Taylor, with the war department and the executive, while it approves the sagacity and foresight ofthe commanding general of the north, is calculated to cast a doubt upon the “ssid ty the pr \- me of Gen. Scott. Old Ready sais for 20,000 men, and a nucle pond force fh 10,000 regulars, as the division required for a successful movement upon San Luis Potosi. Gen. Scott pro- poses to leave him on the defensive at Salullo, ‘and with that view takes from him all his regular troops for the demonstration upon Vera Cruz, leaving Gen. Taylor with a total force of less than 6,000 volunteers to protect the vast scope ot coun- try already occupied in the north. In this pro- ha- | complished in the ed But we forbear further commentaries, in the hope of better intelligence than the reports from | New Orleans of yesterday and to day. If, on the | other hand, it should be confirmed, the only ale | ternatives will be either to abandon. entirely the whole of Northern Mexico except Matamoras, | and all operations by that Toute, and make Tam- | pico and Vera Cruz the base points of future ope- rations entirely, or to recall back the force of Gen. Scott to the rellef of General Taylor, and the re- covery the {ground and the positions he mai have lost. In the latter alternative, all the wor! done in the north will have to be done over again —in the former, all that has been done will amount to nothing, except a waste of men and money. | But there is yet a chance that old Zack has maintained himself, and thatthe new levies of | volunteers just arrived at the Brazos, will enable him to clear his line ot communicauon, and maintain his position as far south as dsltillo, until the operations of General Scott at Vera Cruz, will further enable him to make » forward move- ment upon Santa Anna, who, if foiled at Saltillo, must fall back upon San Luis or Victoria. Let us hope fur the best. w. Baxtimoxx, March 22, 1847. | An Exciting Swnday—An Avalanche of News— Booth’s Benefit—Van Amburg’s Menagerie, §c. Yesterday was a most exciting day in Balti- more, and more attention seemed to be paid to the important news which had been received from the army and from Europe, than to the at- tractions at the churches. The corners of the streets were crowded with anxious multitudes, and the bravery and invincibility of Gen. Taylor the theme of every tongue. This morning the merchants are all flocking to our agents, Messrs. Wm. Taylor & Co. in the jarvis building, for copies of the Swnday Herald, which contains the most detailed account of the Hibernia’s news yet- received. What effect this news will have on the flour and corn market, judging from present advices, is very uncertain. Some seem to think that no change will take place in prices, whilst others anticipate an ad- vance. There is no local news stirring at present, but our city has never been so active before at this early season of the year. Booth closed his en ment at the Museum on Saturday evening with an overwhelming house, and has gone to Washi: to fill an engage- ment with Kilmiste, at his ‘ite, theatrical esta- blishment. Van Amburg & Co.’s menagerie is about to start on its apring tour from this city. They have had their wagons and harness repaired, refitted, and painted, so that the cavalc: le will make a grand appearance, Puiapgtruia, March 12, 1847. A melancholy accident happened this morning as the train of cars for Baltimore was turning the corner at Broad and Market streets. A worthy man, named John McPeck, attempted to getupon the train, intending to proceed to New Castle, when he slipped and fell between the wheels, and was dragged some distance before the train could be stopped. He was dreadfully smashed, causing his death half an hour after being re- moved tojthe hospital. He was about forty-eight years of age, and has left a wife and six children at New Castle, where he resided. The bark Mary Parker has been chartered by the Government, and is now being coppered to prpseed to the Gulf. She will carry out Captain hn Butler’s company of dragoons, raised in this ci! Tire intelligence from the army is about the sole pone of conversation here ; but the opinions in d to its correctness are very varied. The lant feats performed by the army under n. Taylor leads most esis to doubt that he hast met with reverses. Others regard hus escape as almost im in as he is repre- sented, between two ‘armies, each outnumbering his own. Each talker has a plan by which he figures out to his own satisfaction how the emer- gency might have been avoided; and the Govern- | ment, General Taylor, and General Scott, are blamed by turns for the war not being Ace to a glorious close, long before this. full confidence that our brave old Zack is ae ugh and Ready, we can but hope for the best, though trembling? for his fate, iesptared by the infuriated Mexicans, The surveying brig W: launched this morning as was anticipated, the weather being so inclement that it was deemed best to leave ner under cover. She will probably be let off this evening or to-morrow morning. Her fitting out will be completed by Saturday, if the weather should be favorable. The Viennoise children arrived last evening, and were conveyed to the private house en: ed oa paeoadd accommodation, by Mr. Marsh: er of the Walnut street theatre.
