4 and this. Some very interesting fects have been given in relation to the through travel between the two cities, ‘The; number of passengers. of each cl trang, ww York to Bostonsand from Boston New Yous from Jonuary 1 to Decemb: x 3i, specified, was asfollows:-—— Fa: aacly a Fooaaas First Class. Second Class. Total. an Tea 91 89 LAOS 14 05636 127 197 96.801 20,707 117,008 ‘This statement includes 41] the passengers transported: | onall the regular lines of communication between the two cities, by day or night ‘Tne rat several lin>a, varied very esi ly year, and in different parts of the eame year. ‘To th difference is to be attributed, in a large degree, the di ference in the number of passengers. In the yeer 1 for example, the temptation of very low fares greatly creased the number of travellers. It is found, however, | pn calculation, thot the incressed number of passengers ty no meene made good the loes of income, from the ‘ion of the 1ate ‘Tho variance of charge for first ergers, was from six dolls, during three months of 1e44, to two dollars, during tho two succeeding year A cent a mile for the first-class passeuget sverage of rates during the yeor 1844, é ‘The whole receipts, by railroad and steembost Ponies, rmounting, in 1844, te $290,000; in 1845, to $ 000; and in 1548, to $425,000," These receipts were divided between seven compa- bies, of which five were railroad, and two steamboat companies. Of the five railroad companies only two hive paid dividen"s, which they were enabled to do ‘rom theic large way business. The through business of these companies hes averegx¢ about sixty-one thou- sand dollare gross receipts to each. ‘Chere i ion in the minds of those ) Teilroods of the country, in relation to the advantages Corived from what is culled the through trav: way, or Jocal travel, that pays the dividen ®@ cumpavy bes a large amount of this busines: can pay anything on the investment. ‘Tho following extracts in relation to day and night (covel, and the superiority of steamboat conveyance ov ‘hat of railroads, will be of some service to those co! pe reute: It doserves consideration also that the steamboat lines can bo maintained at a le by about 25 per cent, than the railroad lit #0 ‘ompetition between rival routes, the former make a small profit on prices by which the latter will be losers. ‘This fact ulone 18 sufiicient to put an end to the expectation that any land r , however short, will command a monopoly of the pess on any terms Another fact, equally conelusive, deserves considera- tion. Besides the economy of time, there is an econom: of money, even when the fare by the seversl routes is equal, to induce the traveller to give preference to the night routes. A journey from one city to the other, for the purpose of a dey’s business, together with the return Journey, is made in two nights and a doy, and all ox. penses, except those of two meals, are included in the day’s journey. A journey for the accom; lishing the same day's business, in addition to absence from home of three | duys and two nights, subjects the traveller to the same expenses of journey, and also the best of board and lodg- ing for a day and two nights. It is in vain to expect that these advantages of the night lines can be countervailed, by ony attempt to compress the land journey into a part efeach day. ‘the portion of a day saved will be inaut. ficient to redeem either the fatigue of two days’ journey, or the cost of two nights? beard and lodging. Besides, it ia important, in a public view, that the night lines, on their present excellent footing, should be sus- tained. They admit of a promptness and ren) in the transaction of business, which cax hardly he rivalied. ‘The merchant lesves the exchange, at the close of busi- city ; and, with little interference with his ordinary hours of refreshment and rest, he appears, at an early hour of tie following day, on the exchange of the other city. This is accomplished with a remarkable degree of regularity. It a from an authentic statement of the passages of the steamboat mail line from New York, by way of Stonington, during the year 1846, that, of the ala Lact ar beginning at 6 o’clock in the afternoon, at New York, 267 were completed, by arrival in this city, before 8 o’clock on the following bean and that a jarze proportion of the other trains, which wero re- tarded by an unfavorable state of the weather, arrived | business of duriog the forenoon. It the city, that the mails, as well as the men of busi 88, leaving each city at the close of busin should arrive in the other, before the hour of its commencement. li contributes greatly to the regularity, convenience, and safety of business. Experience has Sirosdy proved, that the supposition thet travellers would prefer a day route by land, in a night one by steamboat, even if performed in a shorter space of time, railroad line, performed by daylight, ‘by f the Long | Railroad, has been maintained for the last two and ahalf years. ‘The continuous line of railroad is interrupted by a ary of 31 wiles only in jeugth. This ferry is crossed, in all ordi- important to th Bery states of the weather, with an ease and safety, on agreeabie diversity tothe journey. The | which gir journey bes been ‘ularly performed, during a greai part of the period above named, in the to eleven hours. Yet, at no time du: ofthe wholo number, although the been dine in the United States. We recommend these statementa to the especial consi- deration of the Hudsen River Railroad Company. It | may di-cover the truth of them when it is tov late. Tho | steamboat travel on the Hudson river, will, during the season of navigation, command all the local and all the through business; aud any railroad company attempting to compete with the river boats, will find it impossible to eke out the most trifling dividend, and wo take this opportunity 40 record a prediction which we | shall doubtices in a few years see the truth of, which is that a reilroal constructed upon the banks of the Hudson river, between this city and Albany, will never pay a single cent to its Stockholders, from the net | receipts of the line. We still have our doubts about such aroad ever being completed, should it be, those inter” ested will bear in mind our prediction. In alluding to the probability of the “air line” com, manding the through travel between Boston and New York, the Committeo says :— Tt mnst be apparent, from what has been ecmparative length and iaciliti «!, of the of the propused rou‘e, and that by way of Stonington and Greenpor:, that the | © former can have no power of commanding prgerer te the latter, in those perio when there is the greatest amount of trav: the period when the hezards of navigation afford a mo- e for preierring an entire land ro the difference of ‘rum halt an heur to an héur in ti etweenthe Woon- socket and the Springfield rou‘es,is far too inconsiderable an advantege, to authorize the building of anew rail. roud, at so great @ cost as that of either of the rouios now proposed. The difference, whatever it may be, becomes compa- ratively insignificent, m the fact is considered, which may be regarded os unquestionulle, that, even if the land rout formed by day or by night, were shorter than they majority of tray re prefer a steamboat night route. They thua substitute a nigkt’s rest for the fa- tigue of a dey’s journey, and, at tht same time, save a day, for purposes of business or recreation. ‘There are, “oudtless, those whose tastes or habits do not lead them to make this preference, and, if experiment had not been tried, it might be difficult to determine which of thi ‘9 modes a majority would prefer. But the ex; rien two anda half years, in the running of the Long Isiand train, proves, as has been stated, that a very great majority of trave! prefer the nigit pae- sage. itis true that Lgretas hed in this line have occa- trovage, in that for sionally suffered, or ap) ended inconvenience from bad weather in crossing the ferry ; but at Periods when there could have been no apprehension of such inconve- nience, and when the pessage between the two cities has been mace in from ten to eleven hours, the pass by the day line have rarely been equal to half ber of those. by either of the contemporary night boat lines. Itisnotto be supposed that this prefe co would be changed. in any material degree, by the sub- stitution of an additional day line, even were it to be run in an hour or two shorter space of time. The object of the Committee of the Worcester Railroad Company in making these statements, was to Prevent, it possible, « charter being granted for the construction of an “air jine” between Boston and Now York, but that has nothing to do with tho force or trath of the arguments brought forward. We have over and over again, given similar facts, and it is a source of some satisfaction to seo that the experi¢nce of tho shrewdest rail road managers io New Eng] \ud, confirms the statemeats we have sore peatedly made. Mr. Sepowicx reported a Dill making appropriations for the Normal School. The question of Eminent Domain was further debated ‘n comnection with the Plank Road bill. The bill to appoint Commissioners for the Code was passed by a vote of 23 to 4. A resolution was offered to amend the charter of the Hudson River Railroad, which was passed by 0 vote of 26 to 2. BY THK MAILS, eral sup- | Wasuineton, March 17, 1847. The War News. The distressing news of the massacre at Taos, | in New Mexico, came in upon us this morning, like an unexpected blow upon the right, when we were anticipating something of the sort on the left. The intelligence but too truly shows the spirit of the Mexicans. Gen. Kearny enters the | territory in triumph—swears in the natives from a house top, a town full at a time—puts up a go- vernment, and sets it a-going—and Santa Fé be- | comes the head-quarters of fandangoes and thea- trical exhibitions, the Mexicans participating in the sports with the most confiding sort of assimi- lation, Gen. Kearny moves off on a further tour of exploration—Col. Doniphan goes down the Rio Grande, some 250 miles, to the Paso, in ursuit of a conspiracy, or, perhaps, to out Ihe country for ae Every thing about Santa “éand Taosis safe—but no sooner is the presence of an overwhelming force removed, than the faith-keeping people so recently sworn in to the allegiance ef the United States, rise up and slaughter their benefactors without remorse. The slaughter already committed is melancholy enough; But there is every reason to apprehend it is but the beginning of an outbreak, which will end in a general massacre of the Americans; and make it necessary for Gen. Kearny, on his return from Celiforma, (for we understand he has gone out on an exploring expedition into the deserts,) todo all his work over again from the very be- ginning. This isan ugly business, and to repair it, reinforcements from St. Louis will be necessa- ry, and without delay. _ Reverting to the main army, but for the .de- lorable condition of the Mexicans, there might e some ground for misgivings as to the safety of General Taylor. The proclamation of Santa Anna, discloses his utter inability for a forward movement; and the advanc parties of the enemy appear to be designed for no other pur- pose than to Fk up such small scouting parties, or st lers from the American lines, as may With the new levies of volunteers, General | Taylor will be enabled to push forward upon San Luis, simultaneously with the movement | upon Vera Cruz, so that Santa Anna, in a retreat, either way will be intercepted, and compelled to figh We are firmly of the opinion that the present campaign will wind up the war; for, with the capture of Vera Cruz by General Scott, and the defeat of Santa Anna, at San Luis, by General ‘Taylor, what plan of defence will be available with the Mexicans? what expedient can they devise for further (resistance ? Let these two blows be given in good earnest, and a plea for negotiations will save us the trouble of a third. PuiLapErma, March 18, 1847. The United States steamer Scorpion which left here cn Monday evening, made her reappearance this morning and anchored off the Navy Yard. She was forced to return in consequence of radi- | cal defects in her machinery, which, causing con- stant breakages, brought her to a stand still by the time she reached the Breakwater, and a re- tarn to port was necessary. It is theught tha nothing short of a new engine will ever render her of any use to the government. These deten- tions are extreme mortifying to the officers on tion of, board, who are anxious to take part in the ardu- | ous duties now devolving upon the squadron in the | Gulf. he trial of the charge of obtaining goods under false pretences, pending vgainst Major Daniel, of | Kentucky, has been postponed until the 26th inst., | and it is probable that it will then go over till th next term, at the solicitation of the defendant’ counsel, on account of the absence of material witnesses. - 4 : | The break in the Southern telegraph line, which revented the transmission of bee for the fast two days, has been repaired, and New York | isagain within whispering distance of Washing- | ton and Baltimore. c The weather is quite unpleasant, rain having been falling most of the day, without much pros- pect of a cessation.
