T BGRAPHIC. LATE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT FROM MEXICO. | MOVEMENTS OF THE MEXICANS. | General Taylor's Position. pata idan Sede THE ENEMY NEAR SAKTILLO. GEN. TAYLOR'S OUTPOSTS DRIVEN IN. Threatened Attack on @Matamoras. THE MEXICAN ARMY ON THIS SIDE THK MOUN LAINS. Wasuineton, March 6, 1847. The schooner Cora arrived at New Orleans on the 26th ult., from Brazos 19th. The intelligence of a prospect of an action at Saltillo is confirmed. All of Gen. Taylor’s outposts are said to have been driven in, and an attack, if made at all, was expected during the first few days of February. Gen. Taylor’s command at Saltillo would ex- ceed six thousand men. Many believed that when the Mexicans found him in such force, the idea of an attack would be abandoned. Very many officers are still of opinion that Santa Anna meditated no serious blow in that quarter, and that the movement was but a feint, and that he will lead the main body of his forces to Vera Cruz. Rumors have reached New Orleans by this arrival that a general engagement had taken place. The Picuyune attaches no credit to them. Much apprehension was felt at Matamoraso anattack by Gen Urrea, who is understood to be on th ide of the mountains with fuyr thou- sand men, two thousand of them not to be sur- passed by any in the Mexican service; the re- mainder ace rancheros. Colonel Drake, commanding at Matamoras, has provided muskets and ammunition for citiasns in case of an attack, and had sent to Point Isabel for ae ia, sherry, tort. Wasuinaton, March 4, 1847. The main body of Congross has departed—we meet only with a straggler here and there. A good many military candidates and officers, however, still remain. That Naval and Post Office Steamer bill is the Dill of the ssion. Mr. Thomas Butler King of the House, and Mr. Niles of the Senate are the men who did the business for the mail steamers It is predicted that the three millions, within ninety days, will secure a peace with Mexico. ‘The capitol and the capitol grounds are to be lit with Cratchett’s solargas. ‘he Pennsylvania avenue is tobe repaired, and the long bridge over the Potomac ; the Auxiliary Guard js to De continued. There are many important facts and circtimstances con- neoted with the bills passed, and the last days of the ses- sion, which we shall try to give you to.morrow. Thi weight of our duties for the past week hes le(t us physi- ally unable to undertake the task to-day. 4 Wasninarom, March 4, 1847. Mejor General Benton—The Object of hie Appointment Extraordinary Movement—The Lieutenant General, in fact. Itis known to a Jarge portion of the Union, ere this, that Col. Benton yesterday, is Major General to day!— Tho House, by a respectable majority, was willing thet he should be placed over the tall form of Major General Scoit; that is, “soup”-ersede him. The Senate, how- ever, though with a democratic majority, could not be brought into the messure; there were none among the members of that body to be influenced by Executive Patronage. When Col. Benton, not long since, spoke about his plan of the war, what he had recommended, and whethe was capable of performing “ in deeds of arms,” be men- tioned, o: rt of his plan, two commissioners to accom pany him, in order to make s peace, should Mexico manifest a disposition to treat. This, of course, met with the approval of President Polk, who wished Col. Benton to consummate it. “The sword in one hand, and the olive branch in the other,” was the motto. And who so brave, able and untiring as Col. Benton; for Mr- Polk saya, “ Great let me call"him, { For he conquered m It will be remembered thet Col Benton was General ) Jackson’s instrument in the Senate for killing the United | States Bank—that, * solitary end alone,” he © set the ball that expunged Mr Clay's resolution condem- natory of Jackson~that be defeated the Texas treaty of | 1844—that he conquered the fit; ur forties in 1846, and hel) 0 away @ part of Ore- gon! The w of hiv many exploits? General Houston, of Texas, has repeatedly expressed his conviction that Col Benton has more know. ledge than any man in the country. And it is not, there- | fore, to be wondered that where “fields of glory” are to | be won, he should be © candidate for unfading honors | But why does Colonel-we beg pardon—Major Gen- | eral Benton go to Mexico? To supersede any of the | jor Generals now in Mexico | To k jor General under th 4, which are not yet organized, and mu ercise a little patien d he can wear the chapeau de bras and th |. The intelligence that there is an appropriation of $50,- | 000 in the civil and diplomatic bill to enable the Presi- | dent to renew friendly and diplomatic intercourse with | Mexico. and thet a bill has been passed Sppropriating | three millions to bring the existing war with Mexico to | “a speedy and honorable c®nclusion,”will probably reach | Mexico before Major General Benton leaves “the States.” What will be the eftvct in Mexico we know not The documents laid before the House on Monday night inform us that Major General | Scott has been directed to attack Vera Cruz, and that the main land forces have been ordered to that interesting point’ And beceuse “some of these doc: ments relate to these milityry operations of onr force: | which may vot have beer jly executed,” they we withheld until near the cluse of the session, although ready to be sent in three weeks previously. Itis the beliet of the administration, that the castle is | alegody taken—that the stars and stripes float over it ; and additional consolation is afforded by the latest ac counts, “that news from the various parts of Mexico beon of much interest, as showing the probable sub- ‘sion of the present government, the extreme distress: | ¢8 of the army, the total paralysis of Mexican credit, and | the entire inability of tue ge rn ments to raise money by any of the extraordinary expe- pients recently adopted ,” and that “tl from time to time from San Luis Potos: king wary steps to proclai hat place mv Renius of Santa withstanding hi that Santa Anna cannot keep them together,” not- recent luck in winning four thousand Ounces of gull in cock fighting. > “ The Mex.cans will soon know that Mr. © J. Ingersoll, | on the sth of February, published to Mexico and the world what is to be done with the three millions. “Gentlemen, (meaning Mexico) the moment this ne- gotiation is ripened into a tre %; and treaty is duly ratified on both sid ere are considera. ible sums of money at (which you Idiers, and adi and we say, place, acquit yous ourold debt, ask not a cent of expenses of war, not @ | cent to pay our own citizens for spoliations; we will as sume that, and we willadd a certain sum,’ and these three millions may be magnified with a larger sum, for | aught | know.” Mr. Ingersoll said, inthe course of the same speech, that “we expect to get New Mexico and Upper California.” Mr. Sevier made a similar evowal, pals pec these gentlemen, as Chairmen of the Commit. ct of whioh they spoke Can the “Union, or sr.
