A bill is before the State Legislature altering tho di- vision of the township of Moyamensing into three wards, instead of five. This township seems fated to have some alteration made in its local divisions at every wession of the Legislature, to suit the purposes of some clique of politicians. The whigs having now a majority at Harrisbarg, desire to secure for their friends in the towuship avoice in the management of its ufluirs, us weil as a division of the corporation offices. By the new division, one ward will be democratic, ono whig, ond the other native; so that if the latter act with the whigs, in the Bosrd of Commissioners, that party will have a majority. On the 36th the Cambria’s accounts were received, and immediately produced an extraordinary excitement, accompanied by speculative purchas which swelled the business of the diy to 7,000 bales, ata rise ef fully 340 per Ib. The entire sales of the week reached 39,700 bales. Daring the early part of the following week there | was no abatement in the demand, but, on the contrary, | an increased disposition to operate, of which holdera availed themselves, advance of 3, a Ke, but towards the close the Decame qui imate, with a corresponding es to sell, so that the transactions of the week were limited to 16,200 bales. The speculative support being thus suddenly v drawn, the market began to exhib toms of heaviness, and at the commences ent oi last week prices gave way 14a %c, and even at this decline arket holders found it very difficult to effect sales. This stato | of things continued up to Friday, accompanied by avery | quiet market, but on Saturday the demand opened again + anew, cbiefly on the part of Northern buyers, and jtho transactions reached 7,800 bales, at gradually ‘stiffening prices, which close y in the eve 0 ment of },c. om the lowest rates current 4n the early port of the w Since then the inquiry haa progressed steadily, and the sales of tho past tour days comprise 16.700 bules, in- cluding 6.000 disposed of yesterday, the market having gredually acquired more firmness, until prices ore now on a Jevel wilu tho extreme rates paid on the receipt of tho Cambria’s news, showing, cs before observed, a rise | of 1 cent during the mouth. It will be perceived, on referriag to the subjoined partieulars of the sales, that the demand has centred al- most exclusively on the midiling qualities, a ciccum- stance which explains itself the more readily from the fact, that there has been, thus far, a remarkable scarcity of ordinary Cottons this season ; indeed, the absence these grades has been a general rource of i among tho buyers, The better descri inquiry tor such being chiefly coufined to purchases forthe North Knglish buyers have latterly operated to a very limited extent, and the bulk of the Dusiaess has | been transacted for the home market. For the coatment | ot Europe. there have likewise been several purchases, | aud speculation on tho spot has at times holped to in- | | crease the amount of sales The entire business of the month bag amounted to 85 800 bales ‘The lapse of enother mon h has effected no change in | jews of well i formed parties on the subject of the blush, this remark may appear singt n connection with the general appr: ipts, which now show an increase, when tak tall at year This coi y was already anticipated by us in our pre- cular, wherein took occasion to muke The facilities for send- ndependent of a long contina- | ich has enabled planters to haul our rivers has been infinitely better ‘than was the case | last year. Itis, therefore, far irom surprising that the | arrivals of late have gaided on those of the previous | season ; and, from preseut appearances, we should not | be astonished to see them fully equal the receipts of the | | last crop at some period in the month ot January. Prepared a’ we wore then for the realization of that | | prediction, so are we now satisfied that the increase has ned its maximum.
