M. The steamer Fashion, from Brazos, 24th, arrived at | New Orleans with eighty discharged volunteers, and the remaips of the gallant Allison, of Nashville, who re- ceived a death wound at Monterey. Capt. Yeatman, aid to Gen. Wool, bearer of despatches to the government at Washington, came passenger; also | Col. J.G. Langdon. Gen. Wool’s column was within two miles of Pares, numbering 2,900 men. They were ordered there to es- tablish a depot, and levy upen supplies belonging to the Mexican government. They had already taken a large quantity of flour, wheat and corn. ‘The first and second regiments of the Indiana Velun- teers, on their march from Camargo, had joined General Wool. Gen. Worth left Saltillo with 1600 men. Gen. Butler left Monterey with 2008 men. Col. Quitman’s brigade left Monterey for Victoria on the 14th. Gen. Taylor's squadron left Monterey for Victoria on the 16th. | Gen. Patterson wes to leave on the 2°d with the Ten | nessee regiment of cavalry for Tampixo via Victoria. The Alabama Volunteers, second artillery, had arrived at Monterey. Lieut. Col. Henry Clay, with six companies Kentucky | Volunteers, had reached Seralvo. Capt. Willis, with two companies, at Mier. Gen. Lamar was at Larado. The Mexicans were making successful exertions to raise troops in all the amall towns nesr the Rio Grande. Capt. Stone, with a detachment of seventy men, found | two hundred Mexicans at Ranco, on the Rio San Juan, commanded by Capt. Cantion—their particular object being search. Cantion was captured, and also muster | roll company, with letters of instruction from Ampudia and Paredes ; alse a quantity of blankets and ammuni- tion was secured. Cantion was taken to Camargo, and imprisened, on the 16th. A Mexican was caught entering the magezine at Ca- margo, with the supposed intent of blowing it up. Senate. A message from the President was received and read. He asks an increase of the army, and the eppointment of a Lieutenant General. Referred to the Military Committee. Also, a message from the President relative to the trans- | mission of mails to and from the army. On motion of Mr. Jonson, of La., the Vice President ‘was requested to communicate to the Governor of Loui- siane intelligence of the decease of Mr. Barrow. Mr. Cammnon presented a petition from Bradford coun- ty, Pa. for the abolition of slavery. The question of its ption wes laid on the table. Also, the memorial of Easton College, to import books and instruments free of duty. pe orial for aid for the projected railroad to the Pacific, and a memorial to bring the war with Mexico to ‘a speedy close, were presented. Mr. Camenon said that no man in Pennsylvania desired to end the war in any other modethan by an honorable ace. ee Cavnoun presented the remonstrance of the Ma rine Insurance companies of New York sgainst the re- peal of the Pilot law. Mr. Jarnagin’s resolution, calling on the War Depart- ment for copies of instructions to the Cherokee commis- sioners, was adopted. The bill to reduce and graduate the public lands came | up, and was made the special order for Monday. ‘The Senate went into executive session, and soon after adjourned. House of Representatives, Mr. Paxston Kino asked leave to introduce a bill, sub. stantially a transcript of that of last session, appropriat- ing $30,000, to enable the President to conclude a treaty | of peace with Mexico. The house refused to suspend the rules to receive it— 88 to 89, Personal explanations were made between Mr. Bayly and Mr. Davis,and the offensive expressions of each | were withdrawn ina manner highly honorable to both gentlemen. A mossage was received from the President, recom- monding earnestly the adoption of the Secretary of War's suggestions for increasing the efficiency and better orga- nization of the army ; for an increase of the officers in the regular army, and particularly in the higher grades, and for the appointment of a general officer to take com- mand of all the forces in the field during the war. The President says that it is desirable that efficient measures | be taken to terminate the war before the warm season commences. He calls the attention of Congress to the importance of immediate action in this matter. On motion, the mossege was referred to the military committee. The special order was taken up in committee of the whole, being the bill authorising the ten regiments. Amendments were proposed by Messrs. Tibbats and Haralson. Mr. M'Gavany addressed the committee in opposition to the war. Mewars. R. Dace Owes and Hamusin followed in sup- port of the bill. The committee rose, reported progress, and the House ' adjourned.
