America, and Mexico excites Very little sympa- t thy. The nacuralization papers issued bythe Mex- ican government are about as valueless as so much waste paper. Santa Annais playiug a deep game at present, and by no means a safe one. He isfomenting dis- sensions between Salas and the cabinet, and se- oretly corresponding and siding with both parties. He has written to the ministers of war and fi- nance, advising them not to leave the cabinct, butto remain and hold Salas in check, at the same time that he pretends to Salas the sincerest friendship. His aim is to foment a dissolution of the cabinet—a revolution will follow,—be keeping UP @ppearances with both parties, will be called Upon to assume the dictatorship, and once in | power, he will have every thing in his own bands. Bat in the mean time, the large army he has | collected at San Luis Potesi will find it difficult to | procure provisions. ‘Twenty-five thousand men | are not twenty-five thousane cameleons to live on air, and there is but little chance of the Mexicans receiving manna from Heaven like the Jews, or like Elijah, being fed by the ravens, Besides, it is not atall improbable that Santa Anna has ere this time been obliged to proceed to the capital, to allay the storm he has raised, or rather to take advantage of it for the furtherance of his views. From the intercepted despatches of the Secre- tary of War to General Taylor, Santa Anna has been led to expecta combined attack at San Luis Potosi, by General Taylor on the one side, and a force sent by wayof Tampico on theother. On ‘ this accoent he called in the garrison of Tampico. | But he hasgniscaleulated. No foree will attack him by way of Tampico. That city will be gar. risoned and held, and some of the adjacent towns between the city and the Sierra, may be taken | and garrisoned, but no force will proceed from | Tampico to San Luis Potosi. The road winds alonga chain of rugged hills, called from their form, the Sierra (the saw) and is entirely impass- ble to wagons or any description of wheeled vehi- cles. There are slopes and chasms in the moun. tain gorges only pervious to mules, and the trans- port of cannon through the rocky defiles and up | tke steep hills with which the route abounds, would be utterly impossible. For an army, or even a portion of an army, to march over three handred and fifty miles of such a read, loaded with their baggage, provisions, and munitions of | war, and obliged from very necessity, to leave their artillery behind, would be preposterous in | the extreme. The garrison of Tampico, by the! way, must have buried their artillery in the vicinity of the city. | General Scott is not going to Tampico. He is | going to Vera Cruz. San Juan d’Ulloa is about to be taken, and General Scott will, as soon as that is accomplished, erect his standard in Vera Cruz. There will be a combined land and naval attack | on the fortress, the General leading the land | forces, and Commodore Stewart taking command | §, of the squadron. Should Santa Anna fight at | San"Luis Potosi, he will doubtless get beaten, and | if beaten he will fall back on the capital. Then | will the army of occupation under General Tay- | jor, and the army of the south under General Sertt, proceed by different routes to the city of Mexico. Santa Anna may be obliged, by want of provisions, to fall back on the capital without waiting for an engagement; but there is little | doubt that he will endeavor to retard the progress of General Taylor at San Luis Potosi. Do not bs surprised, however, if something should occur to | bring the war to a termination before the lapse of two months. I speak of the tuture movements | of the army dnd navy with @ reservation of any | such accident After Vera Cruz shall be taken and occupied, Jalapa, Puebla and Perote will doubiless be suc- | cessively invested, and thus the army of the South | will penetrate into ‘ the bowels of the land.” The mismanageinent in the post office is really | becoming an abominable nuisance. I have not received a paper tor four days—and others of my | acquaintance are as badly off. The sotels do not | get their papers at the regular time more than once | in five days, Tho fault must lie either in the | New Yerk or Philadelphia post office. The ex- | cellent postmaster of this city (C. K. Gardner,) 13. a most efficient officer, and there is ne deten- \ tion or deay here. A few days since a friend of | mine showed me a letter mailed at Philadelphia | on the 27th ult, which did not reach here until | ‘Tuesday last, the Istinstant There is gross and culpable negligence, or something worse, in that | department. Congressmen are arriving in numbers by every | train, and a large proportion of both houses will | G. be present at the opening of the session on Mon- | day. Gaviensis. Battimone, Dec. 5, 1846. Mejor Ringgold’s Remains—Native Americanism agein —The Shakers—Ireland—Merkets, 2c. The remains of Major Ringgold aro expected to ar- rive in this city on or about the 16th instant, whilst those of Colone! Watson, Captains Ridgley, Thomas, and Pearson, will probably not reach here before the middle of January. There will, consequently, be two funerals. The preparations for the funeral of Major Ringgold are progressing finely, and as the military | from a distance have received a general invitation, it ir | presumed there will be a large attendance. Major 1 the commanding officer, requests all companies ing to visit the city on that occasion, to report t carly as practicable. Another attempt it about being made in this city revive} native Americanism, which has been totally < tunet for two years past. A. necting is called for Mow. day evening ext, to form a Young Man’s Native Ame- rican Association. More humbug on foot. The Shakers are giving exhibitions here to empt benches. However, I perceive that one of the papers out with a severe article against the roe oy which will, of course, excite public curiosity, and give them a full house to-night. The friends of Ireland appear to be wholly defunct in Baltimore. Net one farthing has yet been raised, nor is there any proposition on foot to raise, a fund to feed their starving countrymen.
