“The Van Ness Case. ON OF TRSTIMONY FOR THE DEFENCE. Court convened at 10 conrinva Morning clear and rad o’clock—jury called—all present, The three witnesses of Saturday from, the post office department called into conrt—to wit: jardner, city P.M., and Messrs. Lawrenson and Reynolds, clerks of the department. | Col Ganpsen cross-ezamined by Mr. Brent—Witness explained the modus operandi of stamping the letters de posited at the Washington post office. Letters are al- ways stamped with a date corresponding to the day on | which they leave the office for their place or places of destination. As soon as the letters are assorted, they are | entered on the post bill for each office to which they are respectively addressed. The post bill always specifics the number of letters and the postage for each office dis- tinetly to which they are te be despatched, and then a transcript is taken, ora duplicate of the entries in the ost bilis im a book. The post biils are sent with the fe tters respectively to the several offices to which they belong ; generally speaking, the stamping of the letters is done between 7 and 9 o'clock in the evening. Mr. Th willexplain that whenhe comes ; he has attended to that ; the entry on the bey is the Inst thin, ils are finally closed ; bardly think that being stamped, could, in the space of aix ken out of the post office, each before being ript, without exctting sible, but not probable. weeks, be ti entered on the post bills or tr attention ; such ating is [Controversy between Messrs. Mr. Brent exhibited stamps of 2 and 29th of this present month, to show if possible, | the difference between these and the stamps on Mrs. Connor's Van Ness letters, purporting to have been writ- ten in 1845, to Green Valley Depot, Virginia. Mr. Baenr—Yes, but you can’t open them on one side; but, however, you'll find eut. Examination of stamps continued. In answer to Mr. Bradley, Col. Col.
