Highly Important frem Mexico—Despatches from the Squadron—Santa Anna—Breaking up of the New Administration—Almonte—Mr. Buchanan and the “* Mexican Agent.”’, Despatches were received last night from the | squadron, and were, to-day, deliberated upon in cabinet council. The news is of the greatest importance. { The new administration is broken up, and Al- monte is going to England. | Santa Anna has been compeiled to deliver up the two millions of dollars, which he took froin | the conducta. Hes thus left entirely without re- sources for carrying on the war. | You will see that this intelligence changes the aspect of affairs altogether. Santa Anna, des- titute of funds, is powerless. Santa Anna, pow- | erless, the warisatanend. I would have great- ly Preferred that things had remained as they | were until after the battle of San Luis Potosi, as | that, or somelother general action, will be neces- | Sary to inspite the Mexicans with a wholesome respect for our arms. But it has been otherwise disposed. It is not as yet certain, however, that | Santa Anna will abandon the conduct of the ar- my. Every thing is in a state of uncertainty. What can be more deplorable than this wretched vacillation on the part of the Mexican people ? I see that one of your city papers has published portions of a correspondence between Mr... Buchanan and a certain “Mexican agent.”” Honour and principle are becoming very facile | and flexible commodities in this nether world. | It isevident from the portions of this correspon- | dence that have been published, that Mr. Bucha- nan’s communications were not intended for | publication, although now that they are published | they reflect the highest credit on their author. This “Mexican agent” wrote toMr. Buchanan on Mexican affairs, and Mr. Buchanan replied Not in his official capacity, as this person would seem to convey the impression, but merely as one gentleman would reply to another whe asks his opinion on matters of public interest. Not- | withstanding that the correspondence was aito- | gether confidential and unofficial, this “Mexican | agent” gives publicity to detached portions of it, and leads the public to imagine that it was an official correspondence between him and the | Secretary of State of the United States. Tho | letters are such as to reflect the highest credit on | Mr. Buchanan’s patriotism and judgment, but their publication is on that account no less a breach of trust on the part ef this “Mexican | agent.” | The Heads of Departments are very busy making out their reports. They are overloaded | with business, and will be during all this session. 1 | | | | | “4 ‘W asninaton, Nov. 26, 1846.
