Mess poe which had been sold in December, 1844, at $775, to about $12 In this state of affairs, persons were found, wno were willing to buy hogs at a price that would ena- ble them to make mess pork at the current rate here, then (12 per barrel ;) and inthe course of the month of August several thoasand hogs were bought at $4 per 109 Ibs, deliverable in November, &c., 1845. Those con- tracts continued to be made during September and Octo- | ber, at about the same rate, until nearly 100,000 hogs had been bought thus in Kentucky alone, tefore one had been delivered. Negotiations for money were com- menced in October, when some six months /bilis on the East were discounted, but in a short time no bills could be sold ut a longer date than four mouths, ‘The dis- comnts were, however, liberal in amount all through Oc- tober and November. But the commercial affairs of ‘wa! | Mhds at some advance on our previous quotations, The | gi the whole country were unsettled by cominued difficulty attending the Oregon and Texas questions, including the anticipation of war with Great Britain and Mexico. Pork and lardeontinued to give way in price in allthe markets east an] south, and had to follow here, until at last hogs were sold at $3\¢ a $334 per 100 pounds; mesa t | pork $10, and lard at 6ceuts. It was then escertained that 287,000 hogs had been cut in this city, an increase of been cut here before.
