Its general direction is south westerly; the south 1g being mostly made west of the Nueces. it may be added that the march was accomplished under circumstances no less favorable than was the suc- cess which attended it remarkable. It had been prece- ded by a drought of several weeks, which had not only rendered the road hard and in good condition for travel- ling, but had reduced the streams to # fordable depth. The Tariff Question—The Party—The Fuctions, and the Prospective Action of the Party upon the Tariff in the Coming Session of Congress Considered. We are credibly apprised that the administration has fixed upon its course of policy respecting the important question of the tariff. Upon this subject, Mr. Walker has been unquestionably given the control. And what are his views is a question e f solution. He feels a pride inthe tariffof °46, because itis Mr. Walker's tariif his favorite bantling—preserved so m‘raculously through all the dangers of wet nursing, teething, and tho like. It ix his pet, his darling; and if we may quote the affectionate endearments of the unfortunate Mre. Myers, it is his “dear, procious angel’ of atariff. It is the model—it is the seck-no-further—it is the philoso- | phor’s s‘one—it is the wand of Midas, the spear of Ithu- riel—the ring of Aladdin—the Simon Pure—the genu- ine modol of the advalorems. it is Mr. Walker's tariff— he is the father and the god-father—the midwife and the wetourse—nnd ali the capital that can be made out of it rightfully belongs to him and Mr. Dallas. By relations of consanguinity—by political relations—but more than all, by the ¢elations of the taciif of ‘46, their fortunes are identitied aad identical : Here, then, we have the way opened toa fair under: stantiog. “The sdministration, that is, Mr. Poli and Mr. alker, decide upon it. Tho fact is porition of Mr. Buchenan is a puzzle. Itis not certainly known whether he has yet ito return to the Senate or retire to the long robes of the Supreme Court, or to remain through the term of | Col. Polk, atthe head of his Cabimet. He can lose no thing now by remaining, as the tariff is annihilated ~he may lose every thing by a transfer. The probabi ities ar, therefore, that he will stand whero he is, a p but not a disinterested spectator of all the intrigu e effervescence around him. ‘The President will most ‘ikely go for the tariff of 46 40 nomine. Theso rumors, whether true or false, had the effect of greatly reducing the number of the congregation, and at jast the treasury became so scant of funds thatthe supply of gas was stopped. After being closed for nearly two months, the church was to have been 2 ened Inst Sunday with preaching by the Rev.
