Aug. 1846. Nov. 1815 Nov. 1846. Loans & Disgonnts,30,020,074 29,296,250 30,667 676 27,734,629 PO: 740 569 16,491,310 19,048,794 18,567,183 Speci 6,663 818 6.439.348 6 622,706 6,124,033 Cireulagion..;... 4,382,277 4,585,286 4448,202 4,776,951 It will be observed that the aggregate movement of these banks in three of the four principal departments, in November, 1846, was less than in either of the other three periods named. The loans and discounts, compared with those for November, 1845, show a falling off of $2,933,047, and compared with those for August, 1846, a decrease of $1,461,621. ‘Ihe deposits have increased within the last quarter $2,095,872. The circulation on the Ist of November, 1846, was $323,749 larger than in November, 1845, and $221,665 larger than in August, 1846. There has beena falling off in specie, compared with each of the returns above given. The amount on hand on the Ist of November, 1846, was $498,673 less than in November, 1845, and $315,315 less than in August, 1846. Tho whole amount of specie in all the banks of this city, will not vary much from seven and a-half mil. lions of dollars. This is about four hundred thousand dollars less than the aggregate in August last. Tho slight increase in the circulation can have no material influence upon the currency, it being buta small per ct, on the total | Notwithstanding the falling off in discounts and the ac: cumulation of deposits, there is a very great abundan of money in the market, and the commercial classes, in cluding all kinds of speculators, appear to have at com- mand every facility for conducting their business advan tageously. The contraction on the part of the banks er this city, is a very favorable feature, and we trust it has been universal throughout the State, as it affords the best | evidence in the world that these institutions have con. fined their operations to the legitimate channel, and that they must be ina better condition thanusual. Any great or rapid expansion: of loans, is positive proof that there must be something out of the regular course of thing: connected with it, and it invariably Jeads to ioflations in some species of business, calculated to derange it— There is very little danger of the currency becoming depreciated so long as our banks adhere tothe course they have pursued during the past two years; and so long asthe currency continues limited in volume, and of a * proyer value, every pursuit must prosper.
