Taylor and Gen, Patterson—Diffioulties to an Early Junction of the two Armies—Reinforcements, Provisions, and Muc nitions required —The Castle of St. John—Plan of an Attack for its reduction, $c, The victory, the aatiaatias ol the occupation of Monterey, give to the invasion of Mexico the most com . manding significayte—portending, as it doos in this as- pect, the speedy shiccession of the most vigorous prose- cution of the war bn our part, and the most desperate de- fence on the part @fthe Mexicans. There is at least the encouragement to hope for a speedy termination of the Mexican war in a triumphant demolition of the Mexican forces, Gen. Taylor has every reason to hope for @ collision with the enemy, long before he traverses the $40 miles intervening to San Luis Potosi. He may find Santa Anna at Saltillo—or the re-organised army from Monterey—he may lose several hundred men in reducing the place ; end may have to leave a garrison of a thousand for its security. He may heve several battles to fight defore reaching the junction at San Luis, and when he arrives there his forces may be reduced to five thoussnd men, assuming that he will not leave Monterey with less then ten thousand, San Luis, with a population of 60,000, will be # formidable barrier to the advance of 6,000 men, if the population show anything of the pluck of the citi- zens of Monterey. But Gen. Patterson, with 5,000 men | is to come up from the east from Tampico, up the Panu- co 150 miles, after capturing, in co-operation with the navy, the forts at that place, and aiter conquering the 5,000 Mexicans assembled for its protection, and is thus to form a junction with Gen. Taylor at San Luis. Now, this will require the nicest calculation, and the most | punctual movements on the part of the two divisions | from the north and the east, to come up to San Luis al- | multaneously, and in the nick of time, for the combina- | tion, Indeed, it can hardly be done. The route from | Tampico, after you traverse the coast plains of sixty | miles, is represented to us as exceedingly abrupt, bro- ken, and difficult of passage, being absolutely inaccessi- ble to any means of conveyance, except the sure footed mules of the country. How is Gen. Patterson to get his | artillery and baggage yeece along this route? up nar- fow bridle pathe, long the edges of cliff, or in the gor- | oa of dog ravines, ‘The thing can be done, bat hew fee will it take this 5,000 men to doit? The same of He has a better road, for he traverses but he has ze to make the ascent from Monterey. | We are sure he will only go ahead | when he knows he is right We are sure ofthat. And we are equally sure, that if the enemy should unexpect- edly hem him in, ‘they did at Fort Brown, he has me steady courege to carve his way renee. But he the men to ensure his hen ? Hebas not. It will require all f the eight weeks of the armistice, and perhaps a ceed Jonger, to enable him, after garrisoning city, to leave Monterey with a force of ten thousand men. Gen. ‘Wool aud General Kearney are ata great distance. It will require from the capitulation a menth te enable them to concentrate at fonterey. Then there are pro visions to be colle before the long march can be undertaken. The ice of the armistice of General Taylor will be required before an make a forward movement, with the most active exertions of the ‘hod Department to facilitate his departure. Indeed, if he can leave Monterey before Christmas, it will be earlier Cy Gi calculations of our military men in this quarter allow. The interregnum is then to be employed the set board, in an attack oe ‘Tampico, and in the occupa: tion of that port b nagar, na the base of tua Sor werd movement west eral Patterson. This demon- ration may not ie anticipated fora month to come, as the forces of General Patterson will have meh or voya, pico. T! y Ind, for the not els navigation have se Harney, the New York, witness, as the recent other vessels, will bear By the most active exertions, therefore, a concentration of Geneal Taylor from Monterey, of General Patterson, from Tampico, cannot be effected at San Luvs (admitting the possibility of the route from the coast westward) before the middle or the end of Jan- next, ifever it is offected at all. Both armies may be victorious, and yet both may be compelled to halt for reinforcements and supplies for a month on the | way ith these views—and their plausibility will not be questioned—the inference is inevitable thatthe future movements of the army of occupation require the most active assistance of the War Department in reinforce- ments of men, and the fullest supply of wholesome and substantial provisions. Ten thousand additional volun- teers ought to be mustered forthwits, to garrison the posts in the rear, to keep open the communication with the depots of supplies, and to reinforce the two divisions of thearmy. Further requisitions will have to be made. Conciliation is now out of the question, and nothing less than the safety of the army, its success, and its comfort, to say nothing of the credit ‘of the Administcation, ins short and decisive termination of the war, demand more volunteers, more mules, more munitions, more trans- rts, and more provisions for men and horses—for the son has set in in Mexico, and the grass is begin- ni fail. the tim time and the plan of the attack onthe castle of Sruz are uncertain, if not w feng jPod But to | ome conclusion the Administration has of late rapidly tended. It is this—that the contest cannot now be closed while that fortress is permitted to stand unassail- ed, and that in its reduction the prestige, the rallying point, the key of the republic, is lost, and the door to ne- gotiation is open. An officer of the navy, distin, ical views than for his experience in reation with us to-day, expressed himse! — “The castle of Vera Cruz canbe taken. The are neither British, French, nor Argentines— the Mexicans and Me: crs ag they stand well at a distance, are igood for nothing at close qu | ters. The castle can be din a night attack. We can run two or three frigat: night ponhe the north channel, and between the fortress and the shore, and ing up close to the walls, can pour a thousand men the castle from the decks in less than half an hour, cut- ting the enemy sword inhand. The place must be car- ried by a coup de main. To stand off and be shot at, we might lose every ree employed. But wee must make close work of it. We must board the castle as we would board a ship, and the parapets on the lend side can be as easily scaled as the deck of a seventy -four rrison ey are hot | from the deck of a ak sloop of war. ——— ought to have been reduced in the beginning of the war. te will have to be carried before the war is |, and the sooner it is done, the sooner the wer will be Wo give these opinions wit hout comment, except that we concur in the conclusion thet the sooner the Mexican tricolor,on the bastions of St. John is displ stars and stripes, the sooner will the authorities of Mexico stwike a bargain for peace. ‘The Navy isanxious for achance, and it ought to be permitted the privilege \ of @ demonstration. We eve that Santa Anna will seize the first plausi- ble pretext for peace—the spirit of the people of Mexico tubborn resistance will not permit him to nego pparent.
