Portentous Rumors relating to the Army at Monterey and the Texan Rangers— Curious History of the Trans. fers in the Pacific Squadron—Estimate of the Extra | Bapenses of the Campaign for Siz Monthe in Mexico— Governor Brown and the Tennessee Volunteors—Govw. Wright and the Secretary of the Treasury, and the suc | cession—Judge McLane and his friends—No Newspaper | to be started for the present, $e. $c. | Another idle rumor is afloat this morning, to wit :—that | after the capitulation of Monterey, the Texas Rangers had broken through all arrangements and discipline, in an attack upon the retreating Mexicans. The mail of this afternoon, we hope, will put this and all other ru. mors and apprehensions respecting the army, quietly under the counter. The report, however, of an attack oy the Texians is far more plausible than the late fabri cation of an assault upon the Army of Occupation by th. defeated and retreating forces of mpu dia; and whil | would not be a matter of surprise that the Texans had | cut short the armistice, the boldness of such a proceed- | ing on the part of Ampudia, would be so remarkable an act of courage for him,as almost to atone for the trea- chery of the assault. Through his meanness Arista was displaced, and now, unless Santa Anna is very scarce of materials, this Ampudia may well anticipate a dismission | from the service as a compensation for his raj rep flight across the Rio Grande, and his defamation of the officer who remained Icng enough at least, to bring off the rem | nant of the army. ‘The command of the Pacific squadron during the last three years, has undergone some curious and interesting transfers. October 12th, 1843, the frigate Savannah, of 60 guns, left New York via Cape Horn, for the Pacific | station, having on board as commander, Post Captain Fitzhugh, and Commander Hollands, asa passenger. Hollands would have started with the command, but for | fear of complaints on the score of seniority. After leav- | ing Valparaiso, the frigate fell in with Commodare Dal- las on the store ship Erie, who came on board the Savan- = and hoisted his broad pennant, as chief of squadron dispersed along the ‘Pacific. Fitz- h thereupon yields the command of the ship to Hol- ies and comes home. The Savannah afterwards ory up at Callao, finds there the frigate United States, Capt. Armstrong, who is sent with said snip by order of Dallas to Mazatlan, Commodore Jones ae leftand returned home in the Constellation. ‘The Unit. | States on returning to Callao finds Dallas dead and bu- | ried, and Capt. Armstrong being the oldest officer on the | ground assumes the command of the squadron, and | Stribling, the next oldest takes the commandof the p’Savannah, while Hollands, Stribling’s, junior, takes harge of Stribling’s ship the Cyane, and returns home. Commodore Armstroug inthe Savannah, cruizes to the | Marquesas, the Sandwich Islands and California, and re- | turns to Callao, where he finds Commodore Sloat, to whom he gives up the squadron, and returns in a mer- chant vessel to Boston. Sloat makes the same cruize as Armstrong, and then, after reducing C claiming i # annexation to the United Stat command to Stockton, and ad across the Isthmus of Panama, homeward. The ship of the line Ohio, with the still broader nego] of Con. Shubrick, will shortly supersede Stock! and thus goes the operations of the law of seniority in the Navy, creat a great deal of outlay in the travelling expenses the superseded | commodores, but keeping every thing in a state of con- | tentedness, Order snl disap line.
