Harlem declined %; Norwich and ‘Worcester i; Long Island 3. The produce dealers ere im fine spirits, the news from Europe having advanced the price of Flour to $6 60 per bbl. Toe news from Europe has not had any particular in. fiaence upon prices for cotton, The market remains adont the same as before the arrival of the steomer, ‘The flour and produce dealers are in fine spirits. Flour has advanced sb. ut 75 cents per barrel, and corn is held at 90 cents per bushel. The speculators will get so high | in their pretensions, should we get much more news | like that of today, that we shall lose sight of them. | Flocr is in a fair way of golng higher than it did last fall. Genesee touched $7 50; per barrel at one time last No- vember. | ‘There was meeting of the stockhelders of the Mor- | ris Canal and Banking Company to-day, for the purpose of toking into consideration the affairs of the concern, and finding ways and means to extricate the company | from the floancial embarrassments under which it now labors The funded debt of the company amounts to $409 000, and the unfunded debt to $40,000, making a toial of $449,000. It was proposed to raise alosn of $290,000 for the purpose of paying off the floating debt of $40,000, and for the eonstruction of boats, &o. A gentleman present offered to raise the amount req tired, upon conditiogthat the stockholders would sell him ene half of the whole stock—that is, 20,000 | shares, at $7 (seven) per share. Several large holders from Boston and Philadelphia immediotely signed a paper drawn up to that effect, and there is no doubt but that their example will ho generally followed. The Vice President of the company stated that unless this arrangement was mado, er come measures be immedi- ately taken to raise the amount required, the board of directors despaired of preserving the canal fer the stockholders, and that the company would egain be" | come defunot. Ciroulare will be drawn up and distributed among the stockhollers. that they may decide upon the matter at the earliest moment, as it is necessary that the thing should be arranged, if arranged at all, by the Istof De- | cember next. These are the facts, as they transpired at the meeting, and we leave them for the consideration of the stockholiers. This is without doubt the best oppor | tunity, and if it is mot made available, the bondholders will step in and take pessession. The company have no funds to meet the next instalment of interest, and when it becomes due, there will be without doubt a foreclos- ure. This work is capable of being made productivo, ‘end thero is now an opportunity of doing so. | ‘The eccounts from the Continent, in relation to the grain crops, are of the most discouraging and unsatisfac- tory description. The rye crop appears to be everywhere @:fizient; but the potato crop in Belgium and in the | North of France, is represented as being good in quality and in quantity, particularly in Belgium, where itis as good asit has been formany years. The exportation of | al kinds of grain, as well as of potatoes, from that coun- | try, is probibited. The bread riots in France are the | best evidence of the rcarcity of food in that section of Kurope. It must be gdmitted that the accounts from ell | quarters, in regard to the crops, differ materially from those of last year. There appears to be more truth in the various reports which have been from time to time received, snd the advance in prices does not partake so much of @ speculative character. Most of the root | crops of Great Britaia will be deficient; the decrease is by no means confined to the potato, and the demand for breadstuffs is thetefore likely to be much larger than at first unticipated. Even in the event of the giaiucrops | ™ proxing an average yield, there must be a very great | and alarming deficiency in the domestic supply of food forman Fortunately the production of the natural food | for animals has been abundant ; and roots and grain, whi h bave heretofore been appropriated for food to this elas of consumers, ean in a great measure be reserved for man. We have now an opportunity of testing our ability to supply the foreign demand for our breadatufis. | ‘We annex returns exhibiting the condition of the lead ing departments of the Bank of England, at different pe- rious this year and last :— Bat o7 Exetane, July 12. There can be but little doubt that hostilities will contigue, and the war prosecuted with a vigor, by | the Mexicans, heretofore unknown. ‘The 30,000 recruits ordered to be raised by the different States in Mexico, appears to have been judiciously dis | tributed among them, and in a manner that there remains | but little doubt of the ability of the States to furnish the men. But allowing every thing we hear to be true, I think that one-third of the recruits may be counted upon, to be mustered into the service under Santa Anna, which | will be badly clothed, disciplined and equipped ; these | added to the troops already known to be in service, sey Al | 8000 under Salas, and 8000 under Ampudia, will make = | force of ragamuffins to rally around the standard of Senta | Anna of 26.000 men ; to support these men, it will require | $a, 000,000 per quater alone. Such a body of men cam not subsist long together in any part of Mexico—if they be quartered on the citizens, as has sometimes been the case, the control of the officers over them will be lost, as has been sufficiently proved. The spirit of war and revenge in Mexico against the United States is certainly popular ,and almost unanimous. quite natural in a people accustomed from their infancy to the party warfare that has been going on in | that country forthe last quarter of acentury.
