SasinaBaibeetic ot enh dae Dteeat oe Mar. lem 36; Long Island %. ‘The uniformity of quotations for all the fancy stocks | on the books of beth Boards of Brokers, at this season, and when'the elements of speculation are 80 propitious, is ‘ter calculated to surprise even the initiated. Dur- a en past month or two, prices have not varied in this market two percent; that is, those now ruling corres pond sonearly with those current last July and August. Within the past twelve months, there has been avery | great revolution in Wall street, not only in the position of many ofthe leading operators, but in the real value of many securities which have heretefore been so much used for speculation, and in the class of speculators. ‘The immense corners which have, within the past year, been perfected, and the disastrous effects of these cor- ners, ven upon those engoged in their arrangement, hove reduced several of the leading and extensive oper®- tora to a level with these of more moderate means. ‘There are not so many prominent houses in Wall street as there formerly were. Heretofore a combination of two or three of the largest houses, to carry up or down apy particular stock or stocks, never failed doing so, and & perfect control of the market was, in this way, ob tained. They could bear down and crush all opposi- tion, and carry any point aimed at. This power bas departed; there are so many concerns in the Breet of about the vame calibre, that combina’ tions for the purpose of inflating and depressing ither way. The re- sult of those corners, which have, within the past year, rta their course, shows that the wealthiest houses in the street are not beyond their influence, and it also shows that there has never yet been in that vicinity an indivi- dual concern strong enough to stand the losses the operations in which they are engaged subject them to. In view of this fact, what chance can the smaller con- cerns have of conducting, for any length of time, a suc- cessful and profitable business—or what probability is the greatest disadvantages, can, for any length of time, | do #0, with ony profit. It is not strange that the expe- | rience of the past year or two, has frightened the out- siders, and induced them to give Wall street a wide berth. Iteppears te be impossible to draw in any of them, having capital to operate with, and those who have nothing to lose are not the kind the brokers want. ‘They require that class who have resources to meet the losses they are almost sure to make. ‘The speculative movement going on in Norwich and Worcester has been commenced by a clique of operators “ the street, who have borrowed a certain sum of money for the purpose of purchasing largely of this stock, aud, | by creating a demand in the market, to influence pric: and, if possible, bring in outside purchasers. The effect, thus far, is visible in an advance of about two per cent; but we doubt the ability of those engaged to carry this , tending to depress prices. Any improvement in the market value of this stock, is of very little importance, when any cornering movement is going on, or the re een’ severe loss of the company might have some effect. ly been experienced, by a train of oars running into a droveof cattle. This must cut into the net receipts of | the eompany very much, and endanger the declaration of 4 dividend in January next. \ ‘The receipts of the Reading Railroad company for the | second week in Ootober in each of the past three years, have been as follows: — Privapetruia anv Reapine Raizro, Second week in «ct. 1844, 1815.
