The Secretary of the Treasury in Town—The War with Mexico—Beau Hickman and the Auziliary Guard—— Mistake of the Knight—Magnetic Telegraph to |Richmond, $c. Hon. R. J. Walker, Secretary of the Treasury, arrived this morning in this city, from his late official visit to the North, and reported himself at the Treasury Depart ment, to the graat relief of various gentlemen who had been wishing, since his departure, that the Secretary they “ desired to see him on very im This important business in several two houses with Me: cases related to the disposition of sundry little offices of & thousand or twelve hundred #year. We understand that Mr. Walker borrowed all the money he desired though at an interest of 6 per cent, which is one per cen more than it has been the custom of the Government heretofore to pay. ‘The secretary is somewhat better of his cold to-day. Respecting the war with Mexico, the government pa- per of this morning confirms our recent reports. ‘the army is to march forward and conquer a peace, and peace will not be given until the enemy have asked it and signed it. The American force in the field it appears, also, agrees with our statement of a fortnight goin the Herald, the army of invasion numbering some 20,000 men. i d, if possible, that the hall announce to the the triumphant ofthe “ existing war again in Wnhrsaw. The excitement created by tl ws of the last battle has subsided. The chief cause of anxiety now is, the non-arrival ef the steamer, and the recent elections in Vennsylv: hio. The right, if not the writ of habeas corpus, the watch- man sheng fit on Monday night last to ‘‘ ring in ” upon the illustrious Beau Hickman, for being found abroad on a late nocturnal promenade, in a state of oblivious reju- vination. The Beau was constrained, per force of neces- sity, to lodge till the morrow in the calaboose, when an acquaintance of the prisoner making his appearance, and ° seeing that the game of “ ringing in” had been turned against the Beau, paid the required fee, and the sot di- sant elegante was dischat It must be said for the Beau, howe that he very seldom been caught in such a pickle, because he has made the discovery thet for a man to live upon his taleats, it is necessary that he should keep “ wide awake and duly sober.” We are informed that the net stock required to a tele- ‘raphic line between this city and Richmond, Va., has en subscribed, excepting about $1500. Wasnincton, Oct. 14, 1846. No further intelligence of great importance from the seat of war thi ening. There is a rumor, however, that certain communications have been received from the Gulf squadron of some moment, to which we give ‘no great credit. There is a general anxiety to hear from the Pennsyl vania elections, for which we cannot account, as, what- ever may be the result, it will amount to nothing upon the question of democratic or whig principles. The result in Ohio, turning upon the State Bank Lr tion and the black laws, will be almost as indecisive pre the broad general distinctions between the two es. The operations in the stock market are daily improv- ing, and prices of the fancy railroad stocks are advancing Norwich and Worcester went up 4 per cent; Harlem 4; Morris Canal 34; Pennsylvania Fives 4; Reading fell off 34 percent. There appears to be an upward movement in Norwich and Worcester, and if the movements going on are successful, we have no doubt prices will reach a point several per cent above that now current. The sales of this stock to-day were large, and we are prepared to see it reach prices corresponding more equally with its real value. We have, however, very little confidence in any advance being sustained, as the same parties en- gaged now in inflating prices, have the power to depress them; at any moment their interest may require it. ‘We loarn with pleasure that Mr. Septimus Norris, (of the celebrated firm of Norris Brothers, locomotive build- ers, Philadelphia.) a practical and theoretical engineer, and a gentleman of the highest scientific attainments, has concluded a contract with the Atlantic and St. Lawrence of their road; the amount of contract not less than $750,000, (seven hundred and fifty thousand.) ‘This speaks volumes for American mechanics, and the enter, prise of our railroad managers. The road is expected to be in successful operation through to Montreal by Jan’ 1, 1849. We annex the current quotations in this market for foreign. and domestic exchange, for uncurrent money, and for specie:— Railroad, for the supply of all the locomotives, cars, cast. | ings, and other machinery required for the full equipment | | ices. #13 Im*m T. The case of the late Mr. Hoyt and Mrs. Myers, of Richmond, Va., has attracted a deal of attention and o sympathy since the publication of the loving correspon dence between the parties. Poor Hoyt, it appears, was the too-obedient instrument of the lady, who appointed heir meetings, planned their interchange of epistolary effusions, while the poor woman waa equally powerless under the monomania of a passion which cests all the rant of your stage-stricken heroines completely in the ade. Regarding the death of Hoyt, there are few but ll pronounce it a righteous judgment for his criminal folly, while \it is equally clear that the self-constituted executor of the penalty, in the eye of the law, is amur- derer, and, under the requisitions of the law, ought to be hanged.
