In reply, I have only to say, that the Northern Light was not engaged in the race at all. T applied te be admitted into the race, but it was de- clined, consequently my oe ‘was not put into racin; trim but went out with all her extra stores, &c. on board, as stake-boat only, and beat beck under easy sail, (a double mainsail, fed is, and bonnet off ) and the fact of her crossing the bow of the Maria upon two tacks, at so great a distance as not to interfere in the race, may be attributable to accident, as suggested by Commodore Stevens, as I gave strict orders to Mr. Lekin, the sailing-master of Li in presence Captain Thomas of the, pilot-boet Washington, not to in- | terfere in the race in the ty od manner, and in con- formity to my wishes the Northern Light bore away ‘upon twotacks, rather than take any risk of such inter- ferance. As it regards the distance of the race, the Northern Light had nothing to do with it. Orders were jiven by Mir. I should be pow to test this question with the Maria, before retir- ing from yachting, (as is my intention of be | doing ) and asl cannot wait here “for the Maria to refit,” I pro- pose a trial in Boston Bay, at any time within a month, which may be agreeable to Commodore Stevens—the race to take place in an easterly ten knot breeze, or any thing which mey offer e it.
