The Fights at Monterey—Arrival of the News, and | the Excitement—Baltimore and Ohio Volunteers —Anziety Respecting the Killed and Wownded— Oficial Despatches—Gen. Taylor—Party Spirit —The Administration nota Party to this Busi- ness. * But Linden saw another sight, ‘When the drums beat along the bale, Commanding fires of death to light ‘The touch-holes of the artillery. The Army of Invasion has gained another hard fought field. Its onward banner now waves from the parapets of the Sierra Madre. The | steamer Powhatan came up this afternoon at | about “five o’clock, ornamented all over with co- lors and streamers waving in the wind. On land- | ing, the purport of this triumphant disp'ay was announced to be the takmg of Monterey. The good people of the Federal City were met on their | On the above evenin, one of the owners o} eight o'clock proceeded to Capt. Taylor and the Mexicans. The yt post office was crowded with applicants for the | Pauube his news; and some one of the lucky few possessed of | tar on th a New Orleans paper, was detained to read again and again for the crowd the news from the camp As one detachment of listeners disappeared to re- | tail the important tidings, another immediately filled its place at the windows. Allwere gratified at the intelligence that the Baltimore and Wash- ington volunteers occupied a prominent place among the fighting men ; but there followed anx- ious inquiries, not yet to be satisfied, of the killed and wounded. It appears, however, that Major Wilhams, of the regulars, a citizen of this district, isamong the slain. He leaves a family here of five young daughters, who have now neither fa- ther nor mother. Col. Watson, of the Baltimore regiment of volunteers, is reported also among | ed of the rank and file, because Baltimore and Washington are interested to the number of some six hundred men. Before leaving this city, they frequently paraded the streets at night, singing some such chorus as this :— “We are going to join the army, ‘We are going South, heigh-ho ; We will cross the Rio Grandy, And we'll march to Mexico.” Alas! my brave fellows, if the news of the night be correct, many of you are at the end of your journey, and Monterey will long be associat- ed in this region with the memory of those coura- geous young men who will never return. It is said that! the draft upon Baltimore, in the volunteers, being chiefly upon the hard-fisted “young democracy” was the cause of the recent defeat of the democratic ticket in that city, but they have amply made up for it before the walls and bastions, breastworks, trenches and palisades of mhecterey. it is only a day since thata gentleman calling upon Mr. Marcy for somelittle post of honor con- nected with the Army of Invasion, was told that there would be no necessity for employing him. because the fighting was all over—there would be no more fighting. The opmion gained ground every day after the intelligence of the evacuation of Santa Fe by Armijo without the firing ofa gun. it was apprehended that that movement only disclosed the policy of the Mexicans to be to en- tice the invading army into the interior and to cut them off in detail. It was expected that this would be the policy at Monterey, and that Gen. Taylor would find it evacuated, and the enemy as far in hisadvance asever. The result changes our calculations entirely, and shows that the Mexi- cans are actually beginning to fight, and perhaps just beginning. ‘Yet we hope this reverse will contribute vastly to shorten the war and hasten a conclusive peace. You will have received all the details. We are informed that a messenger, with the official ac- | ims count of the fighting, and the capitulation (a ve- ry honorable one to the Mexicans, as well as to Gen. Taylor,) reported himself at the war de- fartment this evening, and that Gen ~Scott ex- Trane some disappointment atthe result. Gen. ‘ayloris further said to have adopted the liberal capitulation allowed to Ampudia, from conside- rations of humanity—considerations which neu- tralized the advantages of the brilliant achieve- ments in reducing enemy’s well-arranged {c tifications, but we forbear further speculations, in the absence of the full returns. Suflicient is known to satisfy us all that Gen. Taylor and his brave and _ hardship-enduring ar- my have done their duty; and we have no fear, \for one, that that worthy officer 1s to be superseded, notwithstanding the malicious whispers to that effect. We know very well that there are men, who from mere party con- siderations, would make a precast of the fortunes of war to ‘supplant old “Rough and Ready,”. simply becanse he isawhig; but the course of the administration in regard to him has been most praiseworthy and Honstabis. We know, too, that the President has had evil suggestions of party expediency whispered into his ear, but we also know that he has regarded them with a com- mendable condemnation ofcontempt. He shares in the victories of the army, in the honors of Tay- lor, and the demagogue eserves the larietta = {he the rancheroes, who would make the chief con- ducting this war a party man, or the war itself'a party business. All honor, say we, to old jh and Ready, and the brave men under id. If, instead | utterly routed and of a great victory, he there: vi man who would de- it mere sincerely or deeply, for the sake of ‘aylor, than the President of the United States. If, therefore, there be an under-current for the | superseding of Taylor, we claim that the adminis- tration is not a Party to the miserable enterprize.
