Nor are the towers to be merely pawns They are to have their appropria’ uses. The economy and simple impressive harn of this Norman style are its superior recommendations ‘We have seen the plan of Mr. Owen, anda suite of build ings erected in strict agreement with it, would certainly Present a most imposing and elegant, yet chaste and un- ostentations appearance. ‘The stone, in the Norman style, only require a plain hammer dressing, while in any of the Grecian styles the extra labor of reducing the outer ‘a smooth polished surface, would almost double Yhe cost of the buildings There are large quarries of a beautiful material some eighteen miles up the Potomac, on the very banks of the canal, thus affording the best means of transportatio from the quarries to the Mall in this city, jselected as th site for the Institution. This material is a very fine grained sandstone—compact as marble, and hard as gran- ite, and in thick strata of all colors, from a clear red to a light grey. Blocks of a hundred’ tons might be be ex: | treeted from these quarries. The locks and lock-hou along the’canal are built of it; and we believe, also, that the chequer board pavement in front of the Patent Office is of the same fine article. paCol, Seaton, (our worthy Mayor.) a member of the Executive Committee, remained in Washington during the oficial tour of his associates, from whom fe received 4 daily journal of their proceedings. The Board will meet again in November, w results of the lcbors of th ecutive Committee will, we trust, be made public; as well as the plan which may, be adopted, and the specifications. he object of the * liberal and enlightened donor” is in a fair way of being carried out, in a tier of buildings and an ornamental plateau which be a great adornment and attraction to the Federal City, anda credit to the Rovernment; and in an institution which, we trust, is lestined to become a potent auxiliary in the “diffusion of knowledge” among men, and in the perpetuation of berty. Respectfully, Tux Docron. Pack psa antct 10th, 1846, About 10 o'clock this morning a horrid transaction took place in Southwark. Cries of murder were heard te resound from a house in Front, below South street — On entering and proceeding up stairs to the landing of the second story, the dead body of a woman was found lying in a pool of blood from several wounds in her left breast, inflicted with a butcher knife, one of which had severed the main artery leading to the heart. The per- sons attracted to the scene ascended to the third story, having first provided themselves with billets of wood to protect themselves from an attack by the assassin. On entering the front room, the murdorer was seen extend- | ‘ed upon the floor, also weltering in gore from a shocking gash in his abdomen; he had torn out portions of his en- trails and severed them, in his desperate attempts to com- mit self destruction. He still breathed, and was shortly | afterwards removed to the hospital, where he now lies, with no expectation of recovery. The history of this couple Yand the circumstances | which led to 60 horrid a deed, are mainly as follows : ‘The woman is of respectabie [family in your city, and ow of respect to them I suppress her maiden name. Jn 87, when but 17 years of age, she was married to Geo. | W. Cook, the man by whose hand she fell, and ever since has spent a most wretched life, through his brutal treat- | ment and dissipated habits. She had two children by him, | the youngest between two and three years of age Some | time since ,her husband took up;with a woman of rather | light reputation, and it is said married her. She likewise about six months since, was married to another man named Jas, Lee, and was living with him in the third story room } where this shocking aifar occurred. Cook had some time since been committed to prison on a charg, fe made. by the. brother.in law "of. his. wife, (who | is named Rodgers,) and was only discharged on ‘Thurs. day. On Friday he saw his wite in the street, and re- cognizing her, has, it is supposed, beenever since on the the watch to find out residence, and have an inter. view. He must have obtained an entrance by stealth, | this morning,as no one living in the house saw him enter. Lee, the other husband of the deceased, is said to be a | hand on one of the barges, and went off early this | morning. The body ofa young boy, the son of Capt. John Ww, | Coutts, of Southwark, was found drowned this afternoon, in Almond street dock. He has been missing since Wed. | nesday.
