frogs the wire bridge, as some 0 porsen, was seen in the act on Monday last. A fellow named Enos Barr, who escaped about ten days since from the jail at Reading, where he had been ined to answer a charge of ravishing a child only twelve years of age, was yesterday overtaken beyond Wilmington, Delaware, by the sheriff and oiticor Schlemm, of this city, and this morning sent back to re. sume his old quarters, The officers found him in the | bar room of a tavern on the road, and being somewhat intoxicated, they were enabled to play him a trick, by which he was driven back to Wilmington, and inthe town hall, before he had any idea that*his companions were officers. Some of the up-town fire companies continue to dis- grace the character of our city by their brawls, when- ever drawn into the streets by alarms of fire. ‘The ar- rests are few in number, and the instances in which they received the punishment due to the act, are still more rare. In reply to an assertion in a Pensacola letter that a flag of truce had been sent down to Com. Con- ner, effering to exchange Commander Carpender, his officers and men, for Gen. Vega and the three officers taken with him, and the proposition meeting with a refusal from Com. Conner, the Washington Union says:— “We understand that the rroposition was not refused by Commodore Conner, but was properly submitted to his own government for its decision. We understand, too, that our government has not refused the pro but has sent on instructions which we trust will the exehange of the officers of the Truxton.” sition, lead to The telegraphic bulletin, which appears in the New York papers, from Washington, Sept. 22d, repeats the statement ot the 15th, from the New Orleans Picayune, “that Lt. Hunter, of the navy, took passage in the Princ ton, at Pensacola, on the taht inst. bound for Chagres, with despatches to Com. Sldat. According to the corres pondent of the Picayune, the purport of these despatches isto countermand those so recently sent forward from Now York by Commodore Nicholson, of the Vixen ; and that the Commodore's despatches are supposed te breathe war to the knife against Mexico ; but those of Hunter, eto the bosom” We have already stated that these atches, which were originally placed in Lieutenant Hunter’s hands, were ultimately passed into those of Lieut. Lee, but that their character is entirely mi inthe account from Pensacola; that they produ such change as is asserted in the tone of the instructions, which had been previously transmitted to our Pacific squadron. ‘The bulletin further gives @ list of the new c which has been appointed in Mexico, since the I lution, and which 1s confirmed by the informati ed at the Navy Department—viz : * General Mariano de Sala) as, Minister of the ‘Treasury. Pacheco, Minister of Justice and Public In- The telegraphic bulletin further states, that “ the Union newspaper is silent in relation to the reply u derstood (o have been received by the President on Satu day, from the Mexican government” ‘The “ important letter” to which the bulletin refers, stated “ that the Mexican government had refused to ‘enter into negotia- tions for peace, until the United States had withdrawn her land and naval forces.” On Tuesday night we noticed the report, and remarked, that “whatever decision Mexico has made, has not yet transpired before the pub- lic,” as far as were advised ¢ ‘The annual valuo of British commerce with Mexico, is estimated by the British Minister at Washington at ten millions of dollars. The annual proceeds of the Mexican mines have been twenty millions of dollars for some years past, more than half of which has gone to Great Britain. A Distressing Murper.—A most unfortunate affair occurred up town ea ey morning, which resulted in the death of a small girl, about four: teen or fifteen years of age, named Mary Elizabeth Harles The murder was committed in all store, by a lad named James Kelley, some seventeen or eighteen years of age. Itseems that Kelley had taken umbrage at something the girl had said to abs about a week sinc and would then have attacked her, but for the inter: rence of her aunt. He went away, vowing to be avenged, and that the first opportunity offered he would be the end of her; which threat he has most un. fortunately for _—— and victim carried out.— The girl, Earles, had ad gone to the pump about half past eight o’clock, yesterday morning, when Kelley im- mediately attacked her, and she retreated into the shop of Mrs. Greonbaum, where he followed, and gave her a most violent kick on the side, having on a pair of heavy new shoes, and then fled. The girl imme- stiately plated her hands on her side, and doubling up in great pain, managed to get into the street, from whence she was carried across the street into the house o! friend, where she died in about fifteen minutes. 1 be mother of the girl lives in Harmony lane, and w: mediately seut for, but her child was dead before she 1.” Coroner John D, Bowman was sent for, and held an inquest over the bo: & post mortem examina- tion was had by the three physicians. ‘I'he body showed no outward symptoms of violence, excepting a slight bruise under the floating rib on the left ade. ing an incision in the lower part of the belly, the bdo- men was found filled with both fluid and clotted blood, which had flowed froma ruptured artery, and which was the cause ofher death. The above facts being submitted to the inquest, the Jury returned a verdict that the “death of Mary Elizabeth Earles was caused by a vio- I kick or kicks, inflicted by James Kelley.” Imme- y after committing the act, Keliey fled, and at our accounts had not been taken, althought the police re in strict search for him—Baltimore Clipper, Sept. 24.
