Thursday, Sept. 24—6 P.M. ‘There was a fair amouut of business done in Harlem, and Norwich & Worcester to-day, at a slight improve- ment in prices. The former went up 34 per cent, aud’the latter 4. Long Island advanced 34, and Pennsylvania 6's 3. North American Trust and Morris Canal declined 34. The market continues rather feverish, and prices very unsettled. At the second board there was a further improvement in Norwich & Worcester, and a decline in Harlem, com- pared with prices current in the morning. The lartiord & New Haven Railroad Company have declared a semiannual dividend of three dollars and a half per shere, payable to New York stockholders at the Umon Bank, on the Ist of October. A vigorous movement in favor of the extension of the | station on | Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to an appropriat the Ohio River, is now showing itself in the benighted ‘Ancient Dominion, which bids fair to have its proper in- fluence on the Legislature, especially as the representa- tives elect have been chosen with direct reference to this important end. On the 25th of Sept. (Friday) a con- vention is to be held at the town of Western, in Western Virginia, composed of delegates from every section of the State, to determine what measures onght to be adopt- ed to socure to the Baltimore company such right of way ‘as will be most acceptable to them. The enterprising men of Western Virginia are now satisfied that the con- struction of a railroad through their neighborhood can- not be otherwise than advantageous, caasing the expen- Giture of millions of mency, and securing to them a cur- rent of business the value of which it is impossible to estimate. If the terminus of the road be at a point where navigation is scarcely ever interrupted, the pro- duce that will be transported from the Great West ona judiciously constructed road can have no limits ; and such are the natural consequences of trade, that the country through which it passes must always participate in the general benefit. Were it more certain that a rail- road would be constructed from Cumberland to the Ohio, the tide of emigration would set in that direction, giving value to Virginia lands, now almost neglected, by securing a population of a hardy and industrious cha: racter. The return of the Hon. Lewis McLane to the presi dency of the Baltimore and Ohio Company is generally considered as a favorable omen for the introduction of a greater degree of energy and good management in its affairs, in both of which qualities there has been recently avery sad deficiency, a want of regularity, an over. reaching policy extremely detrimental to business, and a total neglect of the comforts due to the travelling pub- lic. The character of Mr. McLane affords ample gua- ranty that a reformation will be introduced, and travel- lers will henceforth find such respect paid to their ac- commodation as will remove those objections which have heretofore compelled them, in self- nce, to seek more circuitous routes. The present terminus of the Toad is at Cumberland, and, xotwithstanding its arrival at thet important station, within twenty miles of the in- valuable mineral regions of the Potomac, confidence seems to have abandoned their further progress ; but es this inertness may have been produced by the contract- od jealousies of the Virginia Legislature, wo hope soon tos revival of the company’s energies, when the le- gislation of that interesting State shall respond to the enlightened policy which influences the action of every other section of the Union. We are much gratified to find Mr. McLane at the head of this enterprise, knowing that he will not cease his exertions till be has effected the great object in con templation—the connection of the waters of the w: word with those of the Atlantic; and by the completion of this most important link in the chain of internal im- provements, have brought the most distant sections of the confederation into immediate contact, and friendly intercourse. If he shall succeed in these laudable en- deavors, the reputation of his domestic usefulness will not suffer when contrasted with the renown and distinc- tion which £0 hoppily crown his diplomatic services The past, however, must be esteemed by him as only fiduciary of the future. The eyes of an enterprising nation are on him, and in proportion to the interests con- nected with the extension of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad will his exertions be appree! In withdraw- ing from the statesman’s career, and ming a less con- spicuous position, we possess a sublime evidence of the humble beauties of oar republican institutions, in which ‘we contemplate the nguished civilian rendering him- self useful in the less imposing walks of common life. To remove some of the complaints alleged against the road, we would suggest the propriety of introducing the improvements which have recently been made in the smoke pipes of railroad engines, of procuring lighter patsenger cars, reserving the cumbersomé ones now in use for winter custom, and by reconstructing (hat por- tion of the line which is laid with a flat rail, give greater security and accommodation to the public. If as is believed, from the experiment made on the Harlem road, cast iron bars may be employed as a perfect subst's tute for rolled, then their use will not only cause much economy in the expenditure, but will secure to the American manufacturer an unrivalled control of the market, expecially as the ore from which cast-iron rails should be made must be of a superior quality to that used in Europe, where it is less abundant, and more dif. ficult of procurement. If we take the coal business of the Reading Railroad, as any criterion of that of the Baltimore road, we should estimate the revenue, from that source alone, as more than adequate to discharge, within @ reasonable period every obligation which they may have to contract ; leaving, for the stockholders, a sufficient surplus to make dividends, not less satisfactory than those of the Delaware and Hudson Company, which, with every prospect of improvement, now amount to ten per cent semiannually, In addition to the twenty-five miles, which will take the Baltimore snd Ohio Railroad into Stewart's Marble Patnce<We tale this | tie heart of the coal falds, onthe. The revenues derived from these improve: ments are not drawn from the luxuries they introduce, but are, essentially, the oggregate results of increased economy in time and expense, saved in cheapening transportation and travel. In the formation of a good railroad, the nation has an increased capital, which adds as much to the common wealth, as does the erection of a dwelling, or manufacturing establishment, proportion- ably advance the prosperity of its locality ; the products of each refunding the original outlay, and having done that they become, in common acceptation, mere creative AUCTION NOTICES. The Bal. timoreans by their railroad of a hunased mile: have robbed the ancient city of the District of this trade, and while it has been the making of Balti- more, it has been the rnin of Alexandria. In ad- dition to this internal commerce, the western tra- vel bound southward, and vice versn, would be diverted through Alexandria by such a road. We hope the Alexandrians will open their eyes, and look at this thing like men of business.“ No city on the Atlantic sea board can possibly exist with- out a railroad, in this age of telegaphs and loco- motives. Alexandria might reclaim it all if she would, and still Baltimore would be left with an abundant trade.
