been heard. is no general understanding among the w no corresponding unanimity as to the man. There are thousands who would vote fer Hen- ry Clay ever all othermen, even in 1848—there are hundreds among the whigs who believe that he can yet be elected, But there are wiser heads among them—men who, profiting from the losses of the past, are cautioned toavoid them for the future. These men, taking the example otf the election of Harrison, whose conservative opin- ions drew to his support a host of the disaffected of the enemy, without which support from the enemy the enemy would have been successfiul— and, reasoning upon the safe hypothesis that like measures produce like consequences, have hit upon the idea that a conservative man would be apt to succeed, even in a second trial, over any rigid, inflexible old hunker upon either side, or any number of them. These politicians are of the new school—they have a tincture of progres- sive principle about them; they believe that a rail- road car is a superior travelling vehicle to an ox- eart; and that the federalists, wise as they were in their day aud generation, if called up from the earth in our time, would open their eyes in curi- ous astonishment, and confess that the world had been making some advancement, and that gov- ernment itseif must advance to keep pace with the spirit of the age. John M’Lean, of Ohio, is the inan for the whigs. | He has no irreconcileable enemies to conciliate— no schirrous old sores to annoy him—no jagged points in his history upen which to hang the | scare crow of ascandal. A passive, rather than aquine politician, he is invulnerable to open as- sault new States of Iowa and Wisconsin, the suffrages of the west at the next election will be all impor- | tant. He isa member of the Methodist Episco- pal Church, which of itself will bring 200,000 votes to his support—he is from ajfree State, and, though not an abolitionist, he is not a Northern man with Douthern principles, and may there- fore calculate upon the balance of power in west ern New York, upon whieh depends the vote of the State; in brief, we know of no man among the whigs, who is more like ticket all their strength than a M’Lean, parti- cularly in association with Mr. Mangum of North Carolina. The party midable or available ti Mast Gs Glamanmataccemarscorieanee | Crittenden—Delaware then might come in as se- coad best. Mr. Crittenden is an able, excellent, and popular man—the most popular man in the Senaie—personally the most popular man of the whig party. Buthe would be the successor of Mr. Clay, and the very causes ofthe defeats of the latter would attach to the fortunes of Mr. Critten- den. Corwin, of Ohio, is comparatively young | and immatured, though Sue cvensl x cheats for any who be! lieve the new idea of obscurity to Le a favorable feature in the merits of a Presidential ndidate, Clay is ‘oo old—Webster is impracti- ble—Clayton is not suited to the public taste.— Scott, since his programme of the Mexican inva- sion is working out like a charm, is recovering from his sudden fall, but he will limp from that piate of soup for many days to come The probable and the most available ticket for the whigs in 748 will be— For President—Joun McLean, of Ohio. Vice President—W..te P. Maneum, of N. C. ‘The result is, that at this day there | ham & co— higs, and | & ¢o—7 Moo He is a western man, and, with the two | to centre in one | A muster a more for- | | ‘They are both of the young democracy of the { whig party—they are neither of them descended | in principles from the Adamses, the Hamiltons, | nor any of the hard-headed old blue-beards of the party generally. The raw material of the old | whig party is not strong enough in itself to do the | work—to succeed, it must be able to draw re-in- | Jorcements from the rank and file of the opposi- tion—and to be able, it must hold out a bait invi- ting to the popular taste, and names that are rather Suga to the popular ear. But, so utterly bro- en in spirit—so disheartened—so disgusted—so mortified, chop-fallen, and exhausted—so utterly sick of defeats, and so completely despairing of success are the whigs, that we doubt whether at this juncture they have at all determined to show fight in 1848. Thus far, their greatest victory has resulted{in their defeat, and their greatest defeat of their only man whe could unite their scattered | fragments, was by an opponent whose arrogant insignificance they honestly despised. But the contused elements of the great democracy afford no little encouragement; and at an early day we shall take up the cliques and the candidates of the dominant party, and their pretensions, claims and chances to the succession.
