TELEGRAPHIC. TOTA L Loss OF THE U. &. BRIG OF WAR “TRUXTON,” On the Mexican Coast. SURRENDER OF HER OFFICERS AND CREW TO THE MEXICAN! &ec. &e. &e. Wasuineron, Sept. 12, P. M. A slip from the Mobile Herald, of the 6th inst., brings intelligence of the loss ef the U. 8. Brig Truxton. Slips from New Orleans, centain the same information. She was lost on the bar off the Turpan river, 180 miles northward of Vera Cruz. The intelli- gence was brought to the squadron on the 19th ult., by the brig of war St. Mary’s. It appears that Captain Carpenter, of the Trux- ton, wishing to get his vessel near the shore, to protect some boats while their crews were obtain= ing provisions, employed a Scotchman, whom he had taken out of a small Mexican prize to pilot him, but who, from design, or accident, run him aground; this wason the 15th inst. On the 17th, with exception of Lieut. Hunter and a boat’s crew, she was abandoned by the officers and men, sixty in all; who surrendered themselves to the Mexicans. They were hospitably received, com- | plimented with a ball, and left on the next day, with a guide of four men, for Tampico, about 100 miles further north. Lieut. Hunter and his boat’s crew, put to sea, captured a small Mexican scheo- ner, and came down the coast to Antonio de Lizar- do. Thus only two oilicers, Lieuts. Berryman and Hunter, and about twenty men, were saved. As soon as the news was received, the steam frigate Princeton immediately got under way, and proczeded to the scene of the disaster. But mean- while the Truxton had been completely stripped and plundered, and her guns thrown overboard by the Mexicans. After firing the brig, the | Princeton immediately returned to the squadron. The following is a list of the vessels now com- prising the squadron off Vera Cruz; frigates Cum- berland and, Potomac, sloop St. Mary’s, steamer Princeton, brig Somers, schooners Flirt, Petrel, Bonita and Reefer, and store ship Relief. The Falmouth sailed two days previously for Tampico. The Porpoise wasjoff Alvarado, and the Mississippi, Adams and Raritan were at Pen- sacola. BY THE MAILS. ‘Wasuineton, September 11, 1846. Government Expenditures for the War—The first Ten Millions—Plan of Operations—Clerks in the Departments—Fumeral of Mr. McConnell. it cannot be ascertained with certainty how much has already been expended for the prose- cution of the war. There is no question, how- | ever, that between the 18th of May and the 6th of | August, the Quartermaster’s Department of the | | Government was about three millions five hun- dred thousand dollars minus. Four hundred | thousand additional were drawn on the Ith and 16th ullimo. The first appropriation of ten millions was entirely expended by the 6th of August. The second is fast melting | away, and were it not that we have a short re- cess of Congress, an extraordinary meeting would | be called. Every effort is being made by Secré- | tary Walker to keep up the public credit, and if industry will accomplish the object, success is certain. By private accounts from New Orleans, it is said that the Quartermaster at that city had al | stuck up a placard, with the words *‘ no money,” and that hundreds of disbanded volunteers and others had in vain applied for a set- | tlement of their accounts. It is to be presumed that this fact is known to the proper department of the government, and that measures have been ' taken to remove the difficulty. There are many suggestions as to what the | Government ought to do in relation toa plan of operations for the war; and there are not a few | censures because it has not been officially reveal- ed what are all the designs and preparations for | vigorous action. After the result of the battles of | Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palina, can it be su | posed that General Taylor is like Quixotte, marc! ing to Monterey to combat windmills? Is it rea- sonable to suppose that he does not knew, better | than those who reside in the United States, what advantage is to be gained by the course which is now pursuing? In our anxiety to hear of vic- torious fields, we are inclined to complain of tar- dy movements; but we should remember that |“ Rough and Ready” has said he will fight the | enemy wherever he m sy pest him, No Govern- ment on earth ever published openly its plan of operations for war. Every one must see the im- propriety. With spies among us, thoseentrusted | with public affairs are praiseworthily cautious, and in, this particular there should be no complaint by the lover of his country.
