cester fell off 34; Harlem \; Reading \; and Long Island X{. There were small sales of Morris Canal, and there appears to be very little disposition to sell at pre- eent prices. This is evidence that all confidence in the concerns not lost, and that they have some hope of the canal proving to be better property than appears under existing circumstances possivle. A few days since, the cu:- rent report was that the road would not be taken by the company chartered for that purpose, and that the bond- | , holders would themrelves purchase, but had not time to | Perfect their arrangements, and that all idea of the State | selling the Central Railroad must for the present be aban- doned. The investment is too good a one et to ‘oe lost, and the object of this game of fast and loose, is to get the State bonds at the lowest possible rate. The Central Railroad is now finished from Detroit to | Kalamazo, a distance of 144 miles, and its construction: together with the fixtures, cost the State $3,343,234 92, } and is offered to the Central Railroad Company at $2,000, 000, mostly payable in State bonds, which can be bough for 20 or 30 per cent less than their face. Every season the cotton planters make great efforts to got samples of the new crop into market as early as pos tible. This competition among the cotton growers is at- terded with very injurious results, as an carly arriya! ofthe new crop conveys an impression abroad that the maturing generally is early, and that the prespect of a good yield is fair, ax an early picking does away ‘vith the dangers of an early frost. TELEGRAPHIC. Wasminerton, Sept. 2, 1846. The New Orleans Picaywne of the 26:h August says, from information received at Alvarado, it would appear that the Californias were not taken by the squadron under Commodore Sloat, but that American citizens located in those provinces combined with disaffected Mexicans, declared themselves independent of the Central Govern- ment, and raised the flag of the United States in token of allegiance to this country. This version does not appear to be identical with the rumor brought here first from Havana by the revenue cutter McLean, and next by a ves- sel from Kingston, Ja., whither it was conveyed by the Daring, more than a month ago. The ver- sion of the correspondent is confirmed bya Spa- nish letter before us, written in the city of Mexico on the 8th August, in which itis given as news. The steamer Britannia was not telegraphed at Boston yesterday afiernoon. BY THE MAILS. Wasnincton, Sept. 1, 1846. The News from Mexico—Preparations—General Gaines—Mr. Ritchie away from his Post—Retro- cesston—Giood Luck. No official despatehes have been received by the War Department trom the army for the last | three days. The late news generally is credited by the administration, and has imparted the hope | more strongly than heretofore, that Santa Anna will accede to che proposition toopen negotia- tions, as transmitted through Commodore Con- | neron the 27th of July. The expression attribu- ted to him, “if the people of my country are for war, then I am with them, but 1 would prefer peace,” is supposed to contain his true sentiments, | for it has already been oflicially proclaimed that | “the party coming into power will likely offer } | proposals of peace, as we learn from a source de- | serving of credit that such is the desire of many of the most influential men in Mexico” Four hundred horses, and four hundred mules started from Cincinnati for San Antonio on the | 26th ultimo. Six hundred horses will shortly be despatched from Georgia, in the same direction. | Wagons, and supplies of all kinds are on their way to General apior, from every direction.— | The probability is that a junction of the several divisions will soon take place, ‘and then for a march towards the capital of Mexico. 8 ae? General Gaines arrived in the city to~ y, and took up his quarters at Coleman’s hotel. Hicdas somes tetanus cic tiopataik tenis the President, and to insist on a restoration to the command from which he was relieved—the western division—for the purpose of being tried by a court martial, He thinks now, ashe did a year ago, that he is ‘possessed of'ns much per- sonal etliciency, and more mental ability, to com- mand the preposed expedition to the city of Mex- ico, and thence, if necessary, to California, or the ‘sthmus of Panama, or both, than he possessed in the summer of the year 1814, in Canada, at the head of a division, to meet and triumph over « veteran British army of nearly double his num- bers, commanded a Lieutenant General ef ' the Wellington ie et officer of higher rank than we have ever had in” our service since the last days of our beloved Washington.” The old soldier is almost dying to fight for his country ! A more patriotic heart than his throbs in no man’s bosom, and in conversing with him you would feel bound to dissent from the opinion of General Scott, that he is “insane,” and in his “dotage,”” and that the best thing that could be done would be to “place him on an indefinite leave of ab- | sence.” No, no, he fears not “‘a fire on his rear from Washington, nor a fire in front from the Mexicans.” Mr. Ritchie left us yesterday morning and went off to Virginia. Farquier, it is said, where his fa- mily has been sojourning the greater part of the summer. The departure was Fant shy, for what reasons itis not known. It is some satisfaction to know that the Union will be in the hands of able writers—Mr. Buchanan among the number—un- til the editor’s return. ‘The Alexandria people, or that portion in favor of going back to Virgima, had a toreh-light PE cession, with banners and music, last night. day the voting commenced, and will be etre and concluded to-morrow. There is little doxbt that our ten miles square will be curtailed, and the Potomac, as it should, form one of the boun- aa lines of the seat of government. It is said that an elder, in one of our most influ- ential churches has drawn a prize of ten thousand dollars. If an impious man had met with this | streak of good fortune, he would have wasted the money. As it is, some portion of it will, from the known generosity of the winner, be aj pplied to charitable purposes. FELIX.
