Off Point Judith, Aug. 25th, 1846 Mayne Rew. Forr Laramrg, June 28, 1846. ‘The Expedition to California. My last letter was dated at the Twin Springs, where we had encamped in a most beautiful place, and near which a large buffalo had been killed, The next day we reached the junction of the north and south forks, which form the great Platte. We travelled up the south fork four or five miles, when we crossed that stream, which was done not without some little difficulty, it being at this place nearly a mile wide, and deeper than usual, owing to the late rains. We arrived at the ford about the middle of the afternoon, and by sun- down the wagons were all over, the water in many places coming above the wagon beds. The next day we travelled up the south fork ten miles, andencamped. This is a most beautiful stream. ‘There are no islands in it asin the Platte—the bluffs are smooth—the bottom lands from three to five miles wide, gently sloping down to the water’s edge. Timberless, the prairies make a broad sweep over the bluffs, up and down the val- ey, and across the broad river, which winds its silver course through as lovely a scene as the eye ever dwelt upon. From this point the road leaves the river and runs tothe north fork. A distance of fifteen miles bi ht us to ‘‘Ash Hollow,” one of the most remarkable places we had seen on our route. The level prairie over which we had tra- velled nearly all day, suddenly sunk down into a deep gorge. It was a wild dell, and I was told had been the battle ground of the Sioux and Paw- nees. For five miles our wagons wound around among hills and steep declivities to a litle spring, half a mile from the north fork. Here we stopped to enjoy a refreshing draught of water after the fa- tigues of the day, in riding through this valley of sand and water. At this river we found a com- pany of rhs yagons encamped. They had jad considerable sickness, and this day had bu- ried one of their number. We continued up the north branch some three miles, when we encamp- ed for the night. We heard today that Dunbar’s company of 20 wagons, which had left ours a week or ten days previously, had gone up the south fork farther than we had, for the purpose of finding a better crossing, but that the water had risen so that it was impossible for them to cross. Their one bt J of getting across will be to kill buffalo, take Ive ‘Wave, and boat thus be able to get over. ‘ost of our compan: felt pained at leaving this Oregon party behind, articularly our young men, as there were many juir and amiable young The next ing we travelled over a sand road most the way. About 10 A. M. the Loi noggth Rock was discovered, some forty miles distant. I saw it. It looked like a small standing out in bold relief against the sky. Sunday, Aug. 30-6 P.M. ‘We have very little of interest to notice in the stock market. Prices still continue very much depressed and there appears to be very little disposition to make opera tions to any extent. Both boards are pretty well filled up, most of the members having returned from the wa- tering places, and we think there must be a movement of some kind made very soon. Some of the brokers are not making their salt, while others are operating among themselves, with the idea that they can make something out of each other. They will soon find out their mis? take, and may then make some effort to get up some- thing to draw in the outsiders. The rapid depreciation in the market value of Morris Canal, has had a tendency to frighten outside specula tors, and it will be very difficult to bring them again int? the market. A few more such movements as that re- cently made in Morris, will drive away all the outsiders and leave the brokers in Wall street to fleece each other to their satisfaction. ‘The bondholders of the Morris are boots; yy kip and ER— Alibezan, Mr ye. Information has been received in this city that Santa Anna sailed for Sisal, instead of Vera Cruz, which accounts for his non-arrival at the latter place previous to the leaving of the stenmer Mis- sissippi. From Santa Fe, Letters from Santa Fe, dated July 17, state that a special session of the Council was called relative to the approach of Gen. Kearney. There were 600 soldiers in the place, and 1,000 on their way from the lower counties, and report states that they can raise 15,000 in tendays. Fortifica- tions were building; but the probability is that no resistance will be made. ——== BY THE MAILS. Wasuinoton, August 29, 1846. Whig Organization—An Appeal to the Democracy —Future Events—Present Condition of the Ad- ministration—A New Democratic Paper—Chief Naval Constructor—Recruiting Service. Itis a fact, not to be denied, that large num- bers of whig speeches are now being printed in this’city, and circulated under frank. During this month seventy-five thousand were folded and en- veloped, and the superintendent expects two hun- dred thousand more as seon as the press can work’them off ! This isa slight indication that the political elements are at work, and, asone of the papers says, that “the whigs stands animis opt- busque parati.”” It is true that the documents are folded and wrapped in paper at the public ex- pense ; but this should not be a matter of com- plant, for, with the appointment, occasionally, of a few whig cierks{in the departments, this is all the whigs can expect to receive under the present administration. Mr. Secretary Walker remained in this city during the recess of 1844, and did the very thing of which Mr, Ramsey is charged as guilty: The best of the story is, that Mr. Dickens, the Secretary of the Senate, assisted him; but when Mr. Dickens was subsequently a candidate for re-election, the democratie Senators, with two or three exceptions, (among them Mr. Benton,) voted for somebody from Pennsylvania, and Mr. Dickens barely squeezed in by whig votes! Both parties have alwayssent away documents at the public expense, and the cry now raised is nothing more than a political trick, which will be repeat- ed throughout the Smnby. What is to be done in the premises? Will not the cackling of geese save Rome? ‘Why can- not,” asks the editor of the Union, “the Demo- cratic Association of Washington again assem- ble, appoint a committee to ascertain the move- ments of the whigs, and report upon the best means which can be appointed to counteract them?’ The Democratic Association, composed of unwavering and patriotic gentlemen, at their own expense, sent away hundreds of thousands of documents in 1844; and, although people may laugh, did more than the present members of the cabinet, towards placing Mr. Polk in the Presi- dential chair. Some of these gentlemen obtained situations in the departments; but Governor Ran- dall threw his up, because Mr. Bancroft required him to act in the capacity of an ostler; and he wrote the Secretary a letter which has not, nor ever willbe, made public. Mr. Seignstack smells as strongly of democracy as he does of paint; but the circumstance of his wearing a green baize jacket, and being a little deaf, prevented him trom obtaining the office of Commissioner of pub- lic buildings. He was recommended to the office by,a thousand ,mechanics of Maryland and else- where. Hes as capable, honest and deserving, as any in the land, but—he didn’t get it. The Democratic Association have adopted the refix of “Jackson,” and meets in Jackson Hall, uilt and owned by Messrs. Blair and Rives. These gentlemen are members of the association. Will they rally at the sound of Mr. Ritchie’s trum. et? Willthey “hang the banner on the wall of ‘ackson Hall,” and answer to the Union’s call? No, sir. They cannot, unless some few circum- stances, which I am not now at liberty to mention, can be obliterated forever from their memory. What lies in the future may be guessed from the presentcondition of the administration. Every is. The settlement of the Oregon question on the basis of 49, and the veto of the river and harbor bill, have dissatisfied very man; | ofthe members of Congress, and their consti- tuents. Honorable gentlemen who came here to represent the people’s interests, have asked for of- fice for themselves, and been disappointed ; and there are hundreds of things which have afford- edthemes of complaint. Towards the close of the session, having confidence in my integrity, a dozen members wanted me to start a democratic aper ; which invitation I gratefully declined.” r. Rives was applied to; the gentleman who waited on him, endeavored to point out the ne- cessity for the Globe, revived ; 1t was, they said, the only means by which the democratic ren could be united, and future success secured. They were dissatisfied with the course of Mr. Ritchie, and did not conceive that he was acting in good faith towards all sections of the Union, but in good faith towards the Union newspaper, and those whose peculiar interes:s the official pa- rt. This is not rumor, but fact, so far as the information from twenty members of Congress, or more, can be credited. Bu! what did Mr. Rives say to all this? It is not the time, gentiemen. Messrs. Blair and Rives have wealth, a large printing-office, myriads of influential friends, and have not been treated as they de- sired at the hands cf the President. They are under no Kian oer: not to revive the daily 3 They print the Congressional Globe, and have years the start of Mr. Ritchie’s Congressional Register, which he proposes to publish to compen- sate for the withdrawal of the public printing at- ter the present Congress. Although the ‘* Union” has fifteen thousand subscribers, the list, we are told, must be still considerably enlarged to enable the’proprietors to sustain ail its usefulness, and to insure them against pecuniary loss. Y ‘The administration, and Mr. Ritchie, and all concerned, may not credit the assertion now ; but before the expiration of six months there will be another democrat paper in Was! ing 1, SUS- taining old Jacksonian prneiples. e editor, that is be, has left the city for the North. The event is just as certain asa firm pre-determina- tion can make it. What may occur to preventit cannot now be conceived. “This may, coming from an anonymous source, be disregarded. but none can tel ence the wind emanates. w= ever, itm ind will be felt. Ti rs very litle on the surface of po- lities in Washington, but there are subterranean movements which in due time 7 be developed. ‘A rendezvous has been opened near the mar- ket house for recruits to fill up the fifth regiment of United States infantry, which was almost de- stroyed by the consolidation of its meteriel to com- plete the number of men in other companies, re- quired by the act ot Congress passed at the last session, A rendezvous is also open for enlistments in the dragoon service. Our surplus population are now in Mexico, and therefore but few have been attracted by the music ef the drum and fife to the taverns, the doors of which are adorned by the stars and stripes of onr country. A large number of applications have been made for the office of Chief Naval Constructor, rendered vacant by the death of Mr. Humphreys; of course well backed by recommendations an personal influence; but the Secretary of the Navy will not appoint one, as there is no authority of law for doing s0. There are four or five who act in this capacity; and whenever it may be neces- sary, any one of them can be especially employed by the Department. Feuix. Purtavecrnta, August $0, 1846. We are at last enjoying a most splendid day; the sun beaming down upen us with summer heat, and scarcely a cloud to be seen to hide its glories. It is said that the body of Mr. David Hewlett, a member of the Gulick Guards, trom New York, who was drowned on Saturday morning, when about to embark on board the vessel, was found about noon to-day, in the river abreast of the Navy Yard, and atleast two miles from where the fatal accident occurred. Jon M. Coleman, Esq., has been nominated by the whigs of the third district, as their candi- date for Congress. Mr, Coleman was formerly superintendent of one of the grammar schools in that district. A large portion ef our colored population have leit the city for Chester and Wilmington, to attend the camp meeting at the former, or the quarterly meeting at the latter place.
