South Carolina Statesmen and the President—A Scrap of History—Judge Douglass— Commission er of Patents—Distingwished Strangers ~The Statue of Washington, §¢ The report that Mr. Holmes did not call on the President when he was at Old Point, recently, and pay his respects to him, has, in the absence of something better, afforded a theme of conver- sation among the few politicians now in Wash- ington. They are ata loss to account for this slight on the part of the honorable Congressman. “How is it?” they ask; “we thought South Carolina policy governed the President in every thing?’ “And did net Mr. Holmes, when Mr, Polk sent im his veto of the Harbor bill, say, with great gusto, it was‘ really refreshing,’ lvoking ten years younger as he made the remark, while his colleagues responded, Amen?” Yes; ‘but a simple and brief explanation, from one of the South Carolina delegation, not Mrs..Rumor, will afford the reason for Mr. Holmes’s conduct, and perhaps serve as an index of events, in the un- known future. Itis all owing to Mr. Calhoun, between whom | and the President there is not as much intimacy and friendship as there was between Patroclus and Achille mon and Pythias, or Jonathan and David. ‘Towards the close of the last session of Congress, when assistant treasurers under the apaees | act were to be appointed, Mr. Holmes and his colleague, Mr. Burt, recommend- ed Colonel Harleson for the office at Charleston, | These gentlemen were so well satisfied with the | Presiden’’s answer, that they, or one of them, wrote to him, telling him that he was,or would no doubt be,appointed. But what was their mortifi- cation to discover that the President had sent in to the Senate, for confirmation, the name of Mr. Laval, instead of that of Col. Harleson ! Messrs. Hoimes and Burt were highly incensed, and openly accused the Executive of a breach of faith, saying that he repudiated the Colonel be- cause he was a Calhoun man! This is the version of the disappointed, and therefore ex parte. These gentlemen are as “ ar- dent” in their condemnation of this one act of the President as a ‘ southern sun” can make them. ‘This is the reason why Mr. Holmes did not call on the President at ‘Olu Point. As to the breach or frigidity between Mr. Calhoun aad Mr. Polk, or the causes which produced it, nothing need be said on the present occasion. In the Edgefield district, in South Carolina, Mr. Pickens is out against Mr. Calhoun, for the course he took on the Oregon question. A letter from Charleston dated the 22nd inst., now before me, | says that Mr. Pickens thinks, ‘by this course, to secure the favor of Mr. Polk, and obtain the mis- sion to England. Thus itis in the political world. Judge Douglass, of Illinois, went home from | this city, to Illinois, by the way of Charleston, South Carolina, taking the Southern route for the the western, Mr. Burke, the Commussioner of Patents, left the city this morning, for New Hampshire direct, “He will probably be absent a month. Olym district. At the regular meeting the following names were placed in general nomination; C. J. tson Ingersoll, Lewis Carr, Richard Vaux, J. Sidney Exer- Jones, and George Hassinger. Afterwards the delegates partook of some refreshments in an ad- ine joining room, and Col. Jones very injudiciously proposed that the candidates should address the members of the delegation. After some Mr. Geo. Sweet, the | demur the Hon. C. J Bec lead the way in an argument, prepared beforehand, to prove that he was the most available candidate, and could command a majority of 3000 more than his friend Mr. Carr. The latter gentleman then rose, and with a great show of modesty hoped that the una- nimous nomination of the delegation would be given to Mr. Ingersoll. This was resisted by Mr. Schnable, who, in a powerful speech demolished the arguments of Mr. Ingersoll, and declared his intention to oppose that gentleman’s re-nomina- tion. The convention isto nominate on the 7th September.
