guished Senator, the Cabinet will be composed ot the following gentlemen, viz: Secretary of St: Mr. Mason. Secretary of War, Mr. Mare: Secretary ofthe Navy, Mr. Burke, of Patent office Secretary of''reasury, Mr. Walker. Postmaster General, Mr. Johnson. Attorney General, (net determined on). Messrs. Mason, Marcy, Johnson, and Walker, will remain. Mr. Buchanan has been offere: the mission to England, where, it is supposed, and with reason, now that the Oregon question | has been settled, he would be received with | B great favor. Mr. Baxcroft is, according to reputable rumor, | to take the place of Mr. King, near the Court of | § France. Prominent Virginians, I know, have been | Pressing the claims of A’ ew Stevenson, of Vir- ginia, fora tin the € but the President will notconsent to have two from the saine State. One, Mr. Mason, is enough. A’gentleman from Tennessee is spoken of for Attorney General; but here a similar objection lies, There is already one cabinet officer from that State. There is now with Mr. Polk, at Old Point, Major M to be a relative of the President; and perhaps this may be the gentleman to whom rumor has as- signed an appointment, Itis eupposed that Captain McCauley will be appointed to the command of the Washington Navy Yard Mr. Barke will probably be transferred to the Scoretaryship of the Navy, should Mr. Mason be | appointed tothe State Department. Mr. Burke would not make a better, but as good a Secretary as Mr. Masen, and aes saying nothing whatever against Mr, Mason, b mt, on the contrary, Ce ee very much, inhis favor. To be as talented, industrious, and as conservative of the public i a4 terests, as Mr. Burke, is to be fitted for the high- eststation. Mr. Burke is about thirty-five years of age, in the prime of life, with all the discipline and talent necessary to the faithful discharge of duty. The administration might go farther, and fare worse. Of course, we know nothing, as yet, with cer- tainty; but you may put some confidence in the rumor that there will shortly be a change in the eabinet—that Messrs. Buchanan and Bancroft will leave it, and their places be filled by the Pre- sident with due regard to the public interests. What is to become of Mr. Pickens I cannot learn. He will not refuse to go to England, if Mr. Buchanan will not accept the appointment, and prefers remaining in the State Departinent. t2When the President returns, next week, he will probably come to a final determination as to those who shall compose his cabinet advisers, and who shall preven the country at the courts of France and Britain ‘The Commissioner of Patents, I understand, re- fuses to give his assent that buildings for the Smithsonian Institution shall be erected on the square occupied by the Patent Office; for the rea- von that this branch of the government will soon have use for all of it. Paix, Cuarui ston, S.C. » Aug. 18, 1846. A Large Defalcation. For several days past this city has been ina state of high excitement, in consequence of the de- ,a bank director, hitherto Greatly respected in the commu- nity, It seems that Mr. McD. left several days th the, design of going to the Virginia Springs for the benefit of his health, hav- | ing fixed a certain time for his freturn. Mean- time, several of his notes became due and were protested, and the community at length began to suspect that all was not right. His liabilities are variously estimated. Some say ney they: amount to © was mar- faleation and flight of Alderman MeD. since, ostensibly w $150,000, and others to $250,000. ried to a ‘mulatto, oy whom he had six children. His family have all le ed to New York to arrest them when they land, and bring them back to Charleston. The direc: n taken by McD. is not known, although it is suspected that he has gone to New Orleans. She was built for Mr. Jas.gil loopt of this city, and is designed for the freighti b ness, though she has excellent accommodations for passengers. It ig a costly sword, with all the belts and trappings of the most elegant workmanship, the whole enclosed in a neat ma- hogany case. s the time approaches for our militia drill, the feeling against submitting to the galvanization of an old dead law increases, and our newly ap- pointed Miitie Kurnels, Captings, &c. will doubt- less have a warm time of it in sustaming the dig- nity of their stations. It might have been a very good law fifty years ago, but its application at the present day, for the purpose of manufacturing commissions for a parcel of fellows who know no more about drilling military than about drilling turkeys, is nonsense. & The fall trade is about commencing, and our merchants are turning out quite a large number of bales, boxes, and barrels for the Southern and a 40, Western trade.
