Fetax. PartLaDELPHia, August 16, 1846. A refreshing shower fell last evening, but the heat of to-day is very little behind that of yester- day. Our fashionables have commenced return- ing from the Capes and watering places, and others, who wish to follow the leaders are tread- ing in their footsteps on their homeward jaunt; though if they studied their own comfort they would remain where they are, if they wish to es- cape the heat which our citizens are now endur- ing. The sail boat, General Marion, came in about half a square ahead of the Ariel, in the race on the Delaware yesterday. ‘There was a consider- able amount of money staked upon the result of the race. 1 understand that orders have been received at the navy yard, for the launch of the sloop of war Germantown at high tide on Saturday next. This vessel has been built on the most approved model, and the workmanship bestowed upon her is ot the order of superiority for which Philadel- phia is celebrated. She will, no doubt, do her country good service when fairly put afloat. Notwithstanding the heat of the weather, the only theatre now open (the Walnut) is crowded every night Iwas amused on looking in for a few minutes last evening at the appearance which the pit and upper boxes presented. About eight venths of the male part of the audience had divested themselves of coats and vests. Several eases of the same undress appearance were for a short time visible in the dress circle, but a hint from the officers induced the persons to resume their coats. | The Museum still continues open and is well patronized, Our theatrical managers are making arrangements for the coming season, ‘The inte- rior of the Arch is to be much improved and beautified, a new roof is to be put upon the build. ing ; extra entrances have been a pit, which has been considerably en arged by run- ning it under the boxes—the proscenium renew- | r | ed entirely, with appropriate ornaments, and tie dome has’ been repainted with architectural de- sign by Mr. Heilge. The fronts of the first and | third tiers of boxes have been ornamented with paintings by Mr. Glessing, from incidents in Shakspeare’s life and works. ‘she front ot the second tier is ornamented with an arabesque in burnished gold, of great beauty. The arch ot the | proscenium is ric! blyornamented and in the centre appears the arms of Penusylvania. The Ches- nut has been leased, and it is whispered that Mr. Marshall is the lessee. General Welch is also re- eruiting his forces for the winter campaign at the National. Puiwaverruia, August 16, 1846. The late foreign news had not the least effec upon the general market. There has, however been some spint infused for certain articles calcu- | lated for the Western trade, which, although buyers have been near a month later than usual, appears now to be stirring. The jobbing houses are holding out strong inducements; the coal merchants are less active, and much of the ex- pected demand from eastern manufacturers, to- gether with many nullified contracts, have been aa short by the passage of the new tariff bul. Life in Boston in Hot Weather—Theat: icals— Camp Meeting—the Herald nm Boston— Watering Places. As most of our fashionables, including many of | our business folks, are out of town, rusticating at Nahant, Newport, Saratoga, Niagara, and other famous resorts, city life wears a dull aspect, es” pecially in this sultry, salamander -weather. However, there are symptoms of returning ani- mation, and before long the old metropolis of the bay State will exhibit her usual stirring, business like appearance. Theatricals are all the talk here at this time, | and many are the speculations as to which house | will be the most successful the next winter. The National opens on Monday next, with a power- fal Sempanys and the Federal Street Theatre, alias Old Drury, a week after. ‘The new museum and the Howard Athenwum wiil open in about a month, and then look out for a neck and neck race. We shall be lookers on in Vienna, as usual, and shall report to the Herald all the green room intelligence, theatrical chit chat, gossip, &c. The camp meeting at Eastham is now being held, and two steamers leave this evening for the holy ground.
