Thursday, July 23—6 P.M. The market slightly improved to-day, both in prices and demand. There isan upward tendency in prices. At the first board Long Island went up < per cent; Harlem, 1}¢ ; Norwich and Worcester, % ; Reading, 34 ; Ohio 6's, . Very Title ‘was done at the second board, but the sales show a slight improvement on prices current in the morning. There is evidently a determination on the part of some of the most extensive operators to put up prices, and so long as they adhere to that there must bea steady improvement. The receipts of the Reading Railroad Company con- tinue very large. For the third week in July, in the past three years, they were as follows :— PRILADELPHIA AND Respino Raitroa Week ending July 20, 1841. Julj 9, 1845. Petitions are now pending before the Legislature of Maine, for a charter for a railroad from Portland through | Saccarappa, Gorham, Alfred, Sanford, &c., to South Ber- | wick. This comports pretty neerly with the route grant- ed in 1836, to the Maine, New Hamshire, and Massachu- setts Railroad. The route in question would opena pro* | ductive interior, and afford new access to several manu- facturing sites. On the other side of the present railroad, there are pe- titions from Kennebunk, Wells, &c., praying for a road from the junction at North Berwick, or some point in that neighborhood, thence to pass down through Wells, Kennebunk, Kennebunk-port, &c., towards Portland. — There petitions reached the Legislature at rather a late period. The inhabitants on that line, it is well known, have leag been desirous to restore to themselves the treasit @hich they formerly enjoyed, when the great post road ran through all those villages. The Directors of the Western Railroad met at Spring: field on the 15th instant, and declared a dividend of three | dollars per share, payable on the 34 August, to holders | of stock on Saturday, the 18th of July. This dividend ja made payable a month earlier than was expected. — Last year it was paid on the lst of September. Some of the directors were in favor of four per cent, but others, whose councils prevailed, thought it more prudent to move cautiously and keep the corporation strong. The harvest of the year is yet to come; the net revenue, here- tofore in the second six months, having been more than twice as mach as that of the first of the year. The re. coipts last week, ending the 11th, were rising $20,000, | against $15,000 last year. The work upon the Pittsfield dnd North Adams Rail | road is progressing, and we learn that it is expected to ‘bo in operation by the ist of October. The tron for the road is on its way from England, and as soon as receiv. eJ the work of Iaying the rails will be commenced. ‘The highly prosperous condition of the different Sa vings Boake throughout the country, is the best evidence | 1m the world of the improved and improving condition of the Ishoring and mechanical claseos. A recent report of the Institution for savings in Boston, for the past six months, shows that $415,259 have been received in 7693 | deposits, 2.265 of which were new, and 5,428 in old ac- | counts, and that there has been paid out in the same pe- riod $477,411, in 5,663 payments, 2,240 of which were in fall, and the remainder, 3,293, were in part of account,— The accumulated fund amounts to $269,503 50, a division of which will be made in July, 1847. They not only show that the laboring classes are receiving wages remunerating them for their labor, but that they a le to lay up, from time to time, small sums for future exigencies. The full and profitabl Ployment of the laboring classes, is evidence of gene- | ral prosperity, and that the order of things under which we exist is favorable for a healthy increase in the aggre- | Gate wealth of the country. On an examination of the map of the mineral region of Maryland and Virginia, situated in the Allegheny Moun. tains, it will be perceived that the Potomac River passes through the centre of the coal and iron basin, the river being the line of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and the Baltimore and Ohie Railroad, from whence it is easy to form ajust appreciation of the value of the companies lo cated on the borders of this great highway. In our esti- mation, the coal and iron companies on the Potomac must become the most valuable, as their products are not only of superior value, and in the greatest abundance, but, without any private expenditure, will have the advan. tage of a choice of conveyance to market by canal or railroad. ‘The charactor of their coal, ‘ the Cumberland coal,’ is of such acknowledged superiority for heat, duration’ and purity, that the Navy Department has entered into a contract with the “' Mary land Company,” for a large sup. | ply, for the use ofthe United States’ steamers, and not- | withstanding the present limited means of transportation of coal on the Ohio Railroad, the business of this com- pany has, since the short period of itscommencement, | proved perfectly satisfactory tothe parties interested; exhibiting such signs of promise as afford, to reasonable | calculations, the most brilliant hopes of success. | _ Wehail, with much satisfaction, thé prospect of these | enterprises, and do not doubt, now that our principal foreign difficulty has been settled, that such an impetus | will be given to the energies of the country, as will | render them all profitable, and of general national im- | portance. The Maryland and Virginia companies having | been managed with strict economy, they will now reap the advantage of the generul prospects of the country ; having no leeway to make up, their future voyage must prove easy and prosperous. It is with much surprise that we hat | want of economical’ foresight which i | part of the federal government, in not securtng an eligi- | ble site for the establishment of a ‘great national foun- | dery, with such a sufficiency of coal lands as would be | adequate to provide the public steamers with the choicest | fuel, independent in the supply, and beyond every possi- | bility of imposition. The coal and iron beds lie in strata, exposing their front to the Potomac River, in such alternate succession, intermingled with limestone, fire brick clay, and hy- draulic cement, as to render them not only objects of immense value, but subjects of remarkable curiosity, | worthy the examination of the goologist and the en- lightened statesman. The representations made by Silli- man, Johnson, Shephard, Douglas, Shepperd, &c., are | guarantees which ought to satisfy Congress that these mines merit their immediate attention, especially as a very small appropriation would secure all the land that | i | \ | | | | | would be necessary for the public uses. | fi Old Stock Exchange. | 4 109 shs Terms Trast, b30 150 Bx FA ae bio 65.30 | $1,000 Minot 63, ter" 25 $75,000 Pe Se 100 do b60 25: | "$1,000 Reading bas 1% $9 do Long Isl RR 38 Behe Us ‘ Revdiag RR bio 69 13 do Ohio Lfe & Trust 9 ito ©?
