shipments were made on home account, and the recent failures among tiiose engeged in that trade afford pretty food evidence of the ru’nous nature of the speculation. However injurious these shipments may have proved * to those immediately interested, they have been of great service in regulating the balance of our foreign trade, and in removing from our own markets part of a surplus of those products, which would have tended to a further depression of prices. The shipments of corn and corn meal have no doubt been very profitable to those con cerned on both sides of the water, and there is no doubt but that there will be a steady increase in the exporta- tion of this article from this aide, and in the consumption in Europe generally; but we do not anticipate any in- crease in the demand for our other grains of any impor- tavce, notwithstanding the great reduction in the duty, under the new law, and the facilities for entering grain, into the ports ot Great Britain compared with former times. These facilities will be enjoyed by other na- tions more favorably located than we are, and it will be only under certain circumstances, such as a general defi- ciency in the harvests of Europe, that we can find mar- kets in that part of the world for our agricultural pro. ducts to any extent.
