This specie is intended for shipment to New Orleans via the Missis- | sippi river. We may look for drafts of this kind very fre- | quently, and the surplus on deposit here will, at this rate, be rapidly reduced. The revenue from customs collect- ed at this port, forthe month of May, amounted to $1,273,- 107 63. ‘The appropriations made by Congress for tho | Mexican war, amount to twelve millions of dollarepbeing the whole of the government surplus. A very short time will svffice, at the rateof expenditure experienced with- in the past month, to use up that amount, but Congress may deem it proper before the treasury becomes com- pletely bankrupt, to pass an act authorizing the issuo of treasury notes, which would relieve the money market, and furnish a valuable mode of making remittances from one extreme section of the country toanother. An act em- powering the Secretary of the Treasury to issue treasury notes, bearing a nominal rate of interest, for twenty mil- | "ions of dollars, would enable the government to carry on | itefinancial operations mucgh more effectively than under the existing system. For the rost of the season there will, probably, be a great deficiency compared with last, year. ‘The Delaware and Hudson Canal Company have de- clared a semi-annual dividend of eight per cent, payable on the 8th inst ‘The first effect of a rupture in our peaceful relations ‘with foreign powers, upon commercial matters, has been | felt In the South and West, and business of all kinds in these sections has been completely prostrated. Confi- dence has been completely destroyed, and the greatest depression exists. The producers of the interior are afraid to forward their supplies to the Southern ports in consequence of the numerous failures, and the impossi- bility of realizing on their shipments. The merchants | of New Ocleans are afraid to forward their consignments | to Europe or to the Atlantic ports for fear of capture and confiscation, and the ruinous rates charged for insurance. Our principal: agricultural productions being thus de- prived of a market, become reduced in price, and holders and producers suffer ruinous losses. It is not surprising, under this stateof things, that many are made bankrupt, and that somuch embarrassment exists in the commercial world. We have not yet felt the effect of this state of things at the South and West, in this city ; but there is no pos- sibility of escaping it. This being the grand centro of all the commercial operations of the eountry, any de- | rangement in trade, in any section, must ultimately be felt here, and the brunt of all losses generally falls upon houses in this city. We trade with the most remote parts of the Union, and markets are generally found here for the principal products of the country. Credite.are form- ed and prices regulated by our markets ; and whatever ,| tends to depress the money market of other cities, inva- riably reaches, us, and its effects are experienced here | | with greater severity than anywhere else. The intimate | connection existing between this and all other cities of the Union, induces us to think that we have yet to expe. rience a depression much more severe and much more ruinous than we are prepared for or expect ; and we fear the result. The very anticipation of a rupture with Mexico, produced much embarrassment in commer, cial circles, and the reality cannot but increase the evils. It is the uncertainty that hangs over every, thing connected with our financial and commercial af, fairs that is doing so much mischief. It is, perhaps, fortunate for those interested that, for | some time pest, there has been no disposition or opportu- | nity for the commercial classes to launch outinto any great speculation—it is fortunate that the difficulties we now experience have been so long anticipated, as we have in a measure becomo prepared to meet them, or there would have beon a very different result. Even under there circumstances, we have tho groatest fears as to the result ; but had credits been much inflsted—had our jmportations been large and our foreign indebtedness greater than usual—had every thing been inflated and prices very much advanced, there would, without doubt, have been scenes similar to those experienced in 1837 and 1638, anda revulsion would have spread through the country, sweeping in its course every vestige of pros- perity, recently so encouraging and #0 healthy For more than two years, there have been indications of the present state of things, and from time to time checks have been given to business, which, at the mo, ment, were considered unfavorable, but which have proved to be of the most beneficial character, as they | served to prevent too rapid an inflation of credits and ex- | iO tension of trade, and keep down that disposition to deviate from the regular course of business so general in this country. Various Matters and Things. We have nothing this evening from the Rio Grande ; but there is no other expectation than that General Taylor, alias Old Zack, alias Old Rough and Ready is doing up the work “ about brown ;” for we are in daily expectation of the | news of the occupation of Matamoras, the invi D— | | bility of the Mexican Parthians, and the indivisi- | bility of the little Anglo-Jonathan army of the Rio Bravo, or the Grand River of the North. There is no river in the world that has a more | lordly string of titles than that of our Southern | boundary—to wit.: the Rio Bravo, or the Rio | Grande, or the Rio Grande del Norte ; and from all accounts, it is one of the finest streams on the continent—flowing for 2000 miles from the Rocky | Mountains, in a south-easterly direction, through | a picturesque, populous and fertile country, and fresh to the sea—the swiftest, freshest, an bold- on river on the continent, excepting always Old iagara. Rev. H. Slicer, of the Methodist Episcopal | Church, preached for the Baltimore volunteers at the marine barracks to-day; and he exhorted them like one of the patriarchs of the Revolution. | He exhorted them to fight, and to fight like men, | and to beware, above all things, of being shot in ts | the back. He’ said it was a leading principle of Christianity to be ready to stand up, life or death, for our country. He had been himself a 4 | and, though past the vigor of youth, he felt a sinng: desire to be one again. The man who would not fight for his country Was hardly to be | brief, the “ boys” said he spoke like a book. The fact is, Uncle Sam may defy the world. | We are invincible. Kauffman, (one of the representa- tives due from Texas,) and family, arrived in town this evening, and are pate ‘at Brown’s. Col. Kauffman is a native of Cumberland county, Pennsylvania—apparently fy over years of age, standing near six feet, clean lim! ronda cidedly one of the finest looking members of the House. The number of strangers in town to-day does not exceed the ordinary proportion. To-morrow we may expect a strong reinforcement, and we doubt | notthe intention of lifting the tanff will largely add to the lobby members of the House. The lady ands son of Sir John Franklin, one of the celebrated English byperccrent navigators, are inthe city, Lady Franklin is almost as fama a traveller as Sir John himself, and is distin ed. no less for her experience as a traveller, bs for her personal fascinations. We expect she will remain some time with us, and are satisfied that she has already discovered that the Americans are not the Darberians so uniformly represented by mere speculating British tourists—such, for in- stance, as Desens who writes to make a_book sell, even at the cost of truth and gratitude. These pitiful scribblers have done more to alienate the ied of the American people from the el lish than all the events of the two warscombin: | Commerce has been exerting its powerful influ- ence to the re-establishment of a mutual respect between the two countries; and it will be greatl a if peace is preserv public and private hospitalities, to tell the truth, d._ not to confine their observations entirely to spit-boxes, eae ere shops, and bar-room conver- sations. ardon of Lady Franklin for these qoneral rea 8. On Saturday, Wm. H. Watson, Eeq., s young and distinguished lawyer of this city, received the appointment of Lieut.
