Sunday, April 19-6 P. M. ‘The stock market, during the pist week, bas con! , tinued very much depressed, and prices, until near the | Close, steadily fell off. A reaction took place upon the G@nnouncement that the compromise resolutions had pass- ed the Senate by a large majority, and a further improve- ment in prices upon the receipt of the late advices | from Europe. The pacific tone of :he debate in Parlis- ment upom the Oregon question, annulled the tone of , the remarks of the leading Londom journals, and pro | duced oh better feeling in our commercial circles | ‘The favorable aspect of this matter offsets the effect our Qccounts from Mexico at first produced, and on the whole, there was, yesterday, more confidence in the dif- ferent markets, and a disposition to make transactions in stocks, &3, not previously noticed. An advance of se- veral per cent was realised on stocks, and was it not for | the probable passage of the Independent Treasury Bill through the Senate, as it came from the lower, House, there would be, without doubt, a rapid rise and a very gteat speculative movement in the fancies. It is well, however, that there is something likely to prevent too | great an inflation of these bubbles; that there is a cheek | to the disposition a large class of operatives possess to we *peculations, not only in fancy stocks, but in the ‘vast staple productions of the country. The probable | Passage of the Independent Treasury bill, keeps things | snug, end exerts a very healthy influence upon com. mereial matters generally. It compels the banks to | maintain a restricted nt, which tends to limit | the transactions of those not doing a reguler business, and thus preservesa more uniform state of trade. A more important and more restrictive influence will be exert: ed by this bill after it gets fairly into operation. After ‘We get once regulated by this new system, shall have none of the sudden changes now produced by any trifiag and insignificant rumor. Stock speculators ‘Will, ia fect, be less afected by this new bill than any other class of speculations, as they can carry on thei® operations, with reduced prices, better than when they are so much inflated. Operations in stocks do not sffec, the real business of the country so much as speculations in the stiple articles of commerce. ‘We annex a comperative statement, exhibiting the quotations for the principal stocks used in this market or speeulation for each day of the past week, and at the @lose of the week previous. We have taken the extreme qnotations each day, although they do not show the ex: | tent of the fluctuations experienced during the w Beme of the fancies for several days receded five and six per cent. Teeppoars by the Philadelphia papers, that on the 14th inst. a decree was entered in the case of the Bank of Kentucky vs. The Schuylkili Bank, and He- sea J, Levis, forthe sum of $1 184738, as an indemnity for tho fraudulent issue of 13,185 shares of stock of the Bank of Kentucky by the Philadelphia agency, from 1887 to 1840. This decree is made in accordance with the able opizion of the court, delivered some weeks since, by Judge King. It was hoped that this long pend- ing controversy, which has reflested so much dis- credit on Philadelphia, would cesse with thie decree of the eourt; but from the tone of one of their papers, it seems the Schuylkill Bank is oppesling to the Legislature forthe passege ofa law te prosecute an app al without giving security for the Judgme 3 other appellants have to do. It would eortainly be avery strange and unjust proceeding for the legislature thus to interfere, and still more strange | that such an epplication should be made—the sole pur- pose of which seems to be to procure delay, with the vain hope that thie would bring about a compromise. ‘We annex the monthly statement of the banks of | South Cerolina, for the purpose of comparing the aggre- gate movements for several periods. The returns for Maren show a slight increase inthe busi: of the prin- olpal departments :— Dabte. Oe ee See an, 3. Mer. 31.
