Wasmixaton, April 2, 18@8. \ | The ‘Susb- Treasury Passed by the House—The ator esting Cannenade Continued in the Senate—Cw rious Resudés ef the Baltimore Consention. ‘The sub-treasesy, revised and mitigated, passed | the House to-day, 128 to 67. In the Senate, Gen. Cass replied to the remarks of Col. Benton, of yesterday. He refuses to sur- | tender prisoner to the 49 men. Col. Benton replied, and said that the General in his defence, had jump- ed out of the frying pan into the fire; because, if he assumed that France, by the treaty of Utrecht, sought to run a boundary west of the Rocky Mountains ia 1713, wo had lost all title to the country, previous to the year 1907. Mr. Webster brought up the rear im support of @ol. Benton. It is curious, in this dey, to see such men as Webster, and Calhoun and Ben- ton, pulling together with the harmony of a trie of oxen, steadily and all together. Who eould have expected such a result from the resolutions of the Baltimore Convention ? The position of Cel. B. is considered critical; but in the alternative of war, all divisions will be healed in a oombined effort tor | the country; and if “peace be inevitable,” then the forty-nines are triumphant. The squall appears to have blown over; but other developments may be expested every day, narrow- ing down the question to the olive braneh or the sword. We refer you to your reporter’s report. Wasmineron, April 2, 1846. In my letter of yesterday | reterred to the remarks of Mc. Webster, upon his motion to postpone the discussion on the Oregon question fer ove month, but forgot te say that he had read them from a pa- per upon whieh they had been previously writtes. ‘This is rather an unusual course for that Senator to adopt, for he ia always exiempore in his speeches, and seldom wnites them out until afterwards, and then only frem the notes of the reporters. In this instance, however, he departed from his eustomary course, and previously prepared and read them for the Senate. The query then is, in connection with the fact of Mr. Webster having written to Lord Aberden by the Hibernia, did he also send out a copy of what he intended to say on Monday, aad which was so carefully written down, se as to have it published in the London papers asa part of his views on the Oregon question? To be able to ar- rive at an answer to this interrogatery we shall have to wait for the mails by the steamer of the 90th in- stant, if one should sail on that dey, when it will be seen if Mr. Webster really hamor not sent out his remarks with a view to their publication. If th appear about that time in the London pa) Papers, it wil be conclusive evidence that he has done so; fer otherwise, they would not reach En; repre short of | three weeks or a month after their jelivery io the Senate on Monday last, by a sailing packet. | pat | this curious piece of speculation ey record, fer the purpose of ascertaiuing whether he has done se | or not,‘and with the avowed intent ot referring to | it ata future day, should circumstances justify my tions. rales informed to-day that he hadalso writtea to the Banngs in relation to the Beng“ question. Give the notice first of dissolving the | joint occupancy, and afterwards, when the issue will turn out to be either negotiation er war, define the proper line, and debate about it as long as you please. There wes quite another exciting scone im the Senate to-day. Mr. Case rephed to the remarks of Mr. Benton yesterday, and cornered him very tight- ly upon his declaration that the treaty of Otreebt contemplated the running of the 49th parallel to the Aan ocean. Mr. Cass put it to the Seaater te if he really believed that it did; and Mn nton not making any re Cass said that he would take his silence as ‘aa answer, and censider the Senntor assaying ho did not. The parties in that body are coming to chose quar- ters in thls ht, the nearer ghey approach ite termi- ‘nation. I believe, from what 1 eee, that mo settle- | ment of it can take place ull we hear the news by | the next steamer. While this subject is approaching its teruainus, the various cliques are marshalling their forces tor an onslaught upon the administration of President Polk. Inthe course of next week, the Vaa Buren portion of the New York delegation, if not prevent- ed by this notice of the fact in advanee, and for | which Mr. Polk will be indebted to me, intend opening their batteries upon him. The is to begin by Mr. Rathbun calling up his report epen the distribution among the States of offices, in propor- tion to representation.
