Since 1844, the importations have been steadily declining, as exhibited in the above statement. The aggregate importation in 1943, was valued at $43,127,693 ; in 1844, at $74,110,270"; and in 1845, at $68,593,249. The importations this year will not reach those of last, and may possibly be under sixty million® of dollars. There are a variety of causes fora dimin: isbed importation this year. In the first place there isthe tariff, which must exert a material influence upon our foreign import trade and restrict importations, because the modifications contemplated are for a reduction. The supply of foreign goods, will, during the present year: be confined as closely to the demand as our local impor ters canregulate. There may be, as there usually is when the orders from the local importers are limited, a large importation on foreign account, and the market fully supplied from that source. It might be good policy for our local importers to leave the business this year, almost entirely to the agents of foreign manufac. | turers, and come in again under the new tariff. The wat position of our foreign affairs has had and must continue to have a very unfavorable effect upon the trade of the country generally, until the difficulties are settled Mercantile letters from different sections of the country; give this as a reason for the inactivity that exists in those sections, in every branch of business. These things should not, in fact, have any influence upon the domes tic trade of the country ; but so long as there is the slightest prospect of a rupture in our peaceful relations with any foreign power, business will be more or less in juriously affected. - In tho Maryland House of Delegates, the resolution offered by Mr. Johnson, alluded to, has been adopted by avote of 45to 25. It authorises the Treasurer, at his discretion, to sell certain bank stocks, and to resume the payment of interest on the public debt, on or after the lst of April, 1847. This resolution wes lost in the Sen- ate bya vote of 8 to9. The Legislature of Maryland have, therefore, adjourned without making any provi. sions for the resumption of the payment of interest on the State debt. The New Jersey Railroad and Tronsportation Compa. ny will distribute among the stockholders, out of the re- served stock of said company, ten per cent. (or one share to every ten,) on the shares of stock that shall be standing inthe name of each stockholder, at the close of the day on the 14th of March next, at par, with the ad- dition of one and three-quarter percent. as tne rateable proportion of the earnings of the road since the last di° vidend. Notice of intention to take said stock must be given at the office of the treasurer, on or before the 4th inst., and payment made therefor, on or before the 1st day of April next. The new direction of the Morris Canal Company have commenced a thorough overhauling of the affairs of that concern, and if there be any possibility of placing tha® work in a prosperous condition, it will be done by the present energetic president. We annex a statement re- cently made to the stockholders of the company, by the | Board of Directors :— | Morais Canat axp Banxinc Company. | Under the old organizatien of the Morris Canal and Banking Company, there was expended the sum of $3,606,660 48, solely and exciusively upon the canal and appurtenances, and prior to the year |: In November of that year, anew organization of the hts Baber formed, and stock issued‘under the distinctive of “Morris Canal and Banking Company, 1344.” The of the Canal elaware River to Jer- sey City, is 102 miles, and the following were the di- mensions of the old canal: the width at bottom, 20 feet. “at waterline, 32 « the depth of water, 4 “ adapted for boats of from 22to 25 tons burthen. Itis further estimated that the local business of the canal will p vidend on the aggregate cost. There area number of iron establishments on the line of this work, which must not only be supplied with coal to carry on their business, but must have a communication with this city for the transportation of their manufac. tures to market. The canal, when completed, will be the cheapest and most expeditious mode of carrying coal to, and manufactures from, these establishments, and it will therefore secure that business. The through transportation ef coal and merchandise will ultimately be large, if the canal is put and kept in perfect order, and the charges do not go above those of other routes | All the Morris Canal Company have to do is to make their reute the favorite one, and there will be very little doubt but that it wall be as profitable as ite most san. guine friends anticipate. There is business enough on the line, and at each end of the canal, to giveit a large revenue, and it is only necessary that such arrange- rangements should be made by the company to secure this business. It depends entirely upen the President and Directors, and such is the general confidence in the Present board, that we have no doubt they will accom- plish all they undertake. This must be very interesting to the gentleman hold ing five shares, who made himself so conspicuous at the recent meeting, and it must satisfy him that he has made 8 very safe investment, and that there is some chance of ultimately receiving a.dividend. ry Any work of internal improvement diverging from this city must, if properly inapaged and conducted, ulti- mately become productive and profitable, whether it is & railroed or canal. This is emphatically the commer. cial emporium of the Union, and the immense number of passengers and amount of freight coming and going, from one end of the y-arto the other, must give them all a very large business. Rantoul, accepting the nomination ofthe Convention, as the candidate‘for the Presidency, during the last campaign, that he would not be a candidate for a second term, begins already to be | forgotten, or nearly half worn out, at the White House. | am one of those who have sometimes re- | lied upon the word of men high in office for the faithful fulfilment of promises solemnly made, with | all the éclat of their character and position ; but ex- | perience has proven to me that the word of many of | them, is not worth more than that of the humblest MANAGER AND PROPRIETB. | individual, and. oftener than otherwise, not as much. With respect to Mr. Polk’s declaration that he in- tends not to be a candidate again in 1848, I may as | well tell you now in advance, that that is all a mere | matter of moonshine ; and that those men, who are themse!ves on the same with a similar obj | in view, may as lieve make up their minds for that result as soon as possible. Why do I say so, and | upon what authority do I predicate this assertion? | may be very reasonably asked. I reply, upoa many accounts which fall under my eye. I shail relate with this subject, which has actually transpired, and from the relation of which, those who are judges of such matters, | may draw their own conclusions nia Reporter, a paper in the interest of the tration, printed at Harrisburgh, on the 4th of Febru- ary last, contains a long article headed, “The One Term Principle,” in which it endeavors to prove it | “a humbug, historically as well as politically.”— } one interesting incident connect! in :— “ The one term principle is an error. Without naming any others—and their number is legion—1 shall merely remind him that he stands, among all his predecessors of the democratic party,as the only | President who has driven democrats trom office, after they had aided as much as ley in their power to put him into the one he now fills. It, therefore, one who turns those adrift by whose exertions he has been himself saved from shipwreck, after his life and vessel are safe, looks forward tor the same support, at any future period, when placed in need of assistance, he surely cannot and ought not re- ceive it from those whom he has so wantonly ostra- cised.
