tauoa. What w to be done nobody knows ; what | bas been done, nobody can help. One thing is cer- tain—there is a palpable rupture. The Duily Times, ef this city, ia a scorching editorial, last evening, charges that the whigs and the 49 democrate, over -Ahetable-of Mr. Pakenham, have resolved upon the sale of their country to the British. In the Senate Chamber, this morning, a number of Senators were engaged tn the examination of ‘his unequivocal al- legation of treason. We should not wonder if it were made a subject of special inquiry on Monday next, before the Senate. The excitement upon the subject is deep and portentous. Last evening, we hud the honor of a literary visit to Baltimore. A series of delightful lectures are in rogress et Dr. Hamner’s (Presbyterian) Church.— tnight F. W. Thomas, Esq, of the Treasury Department, lectured upon the poetic, moral, and7re- hgious character of Byron. It wasa hard subject to handle before an audience.a lure portion of whom were church members. But Thomas did it with wonderful skill, impressing, in the conclusion, the fact ot the miserable life and the miserable death of Byron, as an irresistible counteracting influence to the evil contagion of his works. Ou the same ocea- sion, your deponent recited a poem of his own, on premises some three summers past. The large church was well filled, and from the rostrum presen- ted such a constellation of sweet faces and bright eyes as we have seldom seen. Weare only sur- prised at our presumption in presenting our indifler- ent lucubrations belore such #n auditory of compe- tent judges. The kindly manner in which the apoe- trophe was received, coofirms us in our pre-impres. sions of the courtesy and politenens of the‘people of Baltimore. Witha good breakfast at Barnum’s, we returned this morning to the Capitol, entirely’ too selt-conceited ior any useful purpose whatever. Of the other entertainments simultaneously going on in Baltimore, with these literary exereises, your lo- cal reporter will doubtless advise you. Mr. Dempster, who had a full house among the Baltimoreans last evening, had a bumper to-night at Carusi’s saloon in this city, at which eas @ quo- rum of the two Houses were present. He is a sweet singer. He gives another concert from the poems of Burns on Monday evening next | Trusting to the editor and our able associates for the exposition of state affairs, we conclude. Long hours, of late, over the midnight oil, have admon- ished’ us that the eye is a delicate organ, though a faithful good servant to the last. Respect ally, Tue Doctor. P. S.—Your Reporter for the Senate desires to correct a material error in the sketch of Thursday’s skirmish in the Senate. Mr, Haywood did not say that he would quit tie head of a committee if he had not the confidence of the Executive ; but that he would do so, when driven to the necessity of asking such questions as had been propounded by ie the Chairman on Foreign Relations, (Mr Allen,) in reference to the position of the Executive.
