It shows that the superstructure will be more expensive than by any o'her route, and also shows that by the nature of the construc- tion, being river embankments and drawbridgas, that the “peed obtained cannot be very great. We have given the above extracts from the report, so as to present to the Public the statement of the Engineer, from which there can be no appeal, and upon which those interested in the contemplated work must depend. We should judge from the tone of the report, that the Engineer has very little confidence in the line. Sabject—" The Testimony of, he Apostles ‘aud early Chrie- | tian Fathers tothe r there appears to be very little strength in the conclusion , drawn fiom any position he has taken, as to the proba- ble productiveness of the road. The report attempts to pro thate railroad costruct- ed on the banks of the Hudson river, from New York to Albany, would be able to successfully compete with the steamboats on the river in the transportation of passen gers. A speed of thirty-five miles per hour is the low: estimate made, and the through fare is not to exceed $1 50 to.$2. As to this speed, it is only necessary to state that | the number of bridges and drawbridges would prevent any such speed being attained. There would be five drawbridges on the line, one of which, at least, would be more than half a mile long, and twenty-five other | bridges for crossing smaller bays, creeks, &c., &c. The lowest estimate for the transportation of through passen- ers is $150 per head. Steamboats on the Hudson river, like the “Oregon,” “Hendrik Hudson,” and “Brother Jon- than,” can carry rs from this city to Albany for fifty cents each, and make money at that; and it is very prabable that in a few years such improvements will be made in the size and speed of these floating palaces, as toenable them torun the distance hetween the two cities in five or six hours, and to carry passengers at twenty-five cents each, profitably. The comfort and con” venience of these steamers, the rapidity and ease with which they travel, the low fare they are enable’ to charge, &c.,make any attempt to compete with them, by the construction of a railroad, depending upon the river travel for support, one of the wildest achemes ima- ginable. Travellers for pleasure would, in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred, prefer the steamers to the cars. The splendid scenery of the Hudson would be lost to | those tumbling along its banks, through deep cuts and over drawbridges, and a very large portion of those tra- velling for pleasure would, by 20 ‘There are many other advantages in steamboat travel- ling, perticulariy upon the waters of the Hudson river, iF I ce of a spiritual seuse to the Seri ture” Seats free. CONSUMPTION. O NUM*ROUS are the instances of Dr. &. W. VON- DERSMITH’S success in the treatment of diseased Lungs, | that the curability of Consumption seems to be no longer | stronger evidence of talent in this respect. | relative tothe cures he has effected are unimpeachable, and | ¢ially, a | ans, lose that.— | ‘which would influence the public ; but the most impor- | tant, and at the same time the strongest, inducement, in fayor of the steamers, is the almighty dollar. The cheap est route, all other things being nearly equ Can control the travel. We find in several sec- tions of the country, particularly on Long Island Sound, the navigation of which is often very un- | pleseant and even dangerous, acompetition between steamboats and railroads, that proves more unprofitable ‘to the latter than to the former. The Hudson River pos- sesses facilities for steam navigation, superior to any | other in the world; it is the marine race course of the Union; and the steamers that ply between this city and every town of any importance on its banks, are capable .of transporting the freight and travel of these pl at cheaper rates than any other mode of conveyance. A railroad on either bank of the Hadson river, must, therefore, depend upon the busin of the towns through which it would pass, during the winter months, and that would not be sufficient to pay two per cent on the estimated cost of the contemplated road. A railroad between New York and Albany, to be productive, even at the lowest cost, must take an inland Toute, so as to command the local trade of those | towns back from the river, and too far distant from its advantages. It must depend upon other sources for revenue than those derived immediately from the river trade. The navigation of the river is not, on the sverage, suspended more then three months in the twelve, and not its entire length for even that short time. It must, therefore, appear plain to every one who will take a disinterested view of the statements presentcd in the Hudson River Railroad report, that the route is not fea, sible; that the estimates are much below what the actuay expendit vould be; that its gross income would be ry lim: compared with that anticipated. We do ot believe it possible to fill up the stock of a company to construct a river route between Albany and New ork. ‘The difficulty expesienced in obtaining the three millions subscription to tke New York and Erie Rail- road, is vory good evidence that asubscription of double | ‘thet amount, for the construction of a road possessing | nota tithe of the advantages of the Erie, could not, by any possibility, be obtained. - Stock Exchange. 9336 ef she bo & Wor bg Gig 6 a3 64m is | de 6 ™ % do a0 643 50 do ae toot 960 59 29% 109 b60 60 50 Touavanta RR, 100 400 Long isl. m5 53 100 do 33 10 Ohio Life & Tr, > AH do bow 53 100 MorrisConal, ‘bim 21 100 do 60 5334 wo sede 20% Weoltarlem RR, bed Sy ‘50 Canton Co. me oe ee Eo) do he 0 do ba0 53. Wasuinoton, Feb. 6, 1846. The pleasing duty devolves upon me to-night, of communicating to the country, through the colums of the Herald, the important intelligence that Lord Aberdeen, through Mr. McLane, has inform! ed this government that the passage of the notice dissolving the joint occupancy of the-Oregon terri- tory, will be highly acceptable to him; and further- more, that England will not, and cannot take any offence at an act which itis the right of the United States to do at any time, in accordance with the | provision of the treaty, relating to the same. This wuts to rest the panic makers in louses of | Bongren and elsewhere, who, with a view to de- | feat the President’s measures, strove to im) upon the public mind, the idea that war with | Iand would be inevitable, if the notice should pase. | Here, then, is an end to all this humbug, so well | performed by afew men, who want all the credit {and honor in the country for pe what none but themselves imagine them be—the Sir Oracles of wisdom and jae FA The doc- trines, therefore, of the message are the only correct ones in regard to this matter, which the instruction of the people led them to recognise alike | with the President, as the true plan of operation to pursue in this controversy. The President has een right—the people, in supporting him, have ree right—the politicans alone, who can scarcely ever see beyond the boundary of their respective localities, alone are in the wrong. All opposition | to the passage of the notice must cease; the instant it is known to every one here on Sunday next, | through the columns of the Herald, the only paper that gives a correct account of what the ph ott ae ed is doing, and in this it is far, far ahead of the Union. No attempt may now be looked for at ne; - tion, until atter the passage of the notice; Ibelieve Mr. Pakenham will propose terms for the final and amicable adjustment of all difficulties be- tween Great Britain and this country, He may have received new powers for this purpcse—and it is my belief that he has; and when the proper time shall have come, they will be offered to our govern- ment in a spirit of conciliation and compromise ; | but they must not embrace a provision to secure for | Great Britain the ri; en to any portion of the territo- iy south of the ‘th parallel. Upon this point our ‘overnment is irrevocably fixed, and no power, or |fo force, or fear of consequences, can drive them from. | that position. ‘The President’s levee, last night, was one of the | most brilliant affairs of that kind that has ever been | seen within the walls of the White House. | Cabinet—the whole of the diplomatic cor au | merous attendance of military and naval officers, | and a vast concourse of Congressmen and citizens | of every political hue and complexion, thronged to suffocation the east room, reception room, and ad- | joining parlors, halls and passages. pe ay believe there was scarcely a biped in Washington that was not there, except the ginger-bread and cake genera- | tion, that refused to attend, on account of learning | that’! Mrs. Polk had forgotten the advice I gave her | in my account of the last levee, to provide those re- quisite dainties. Although the crowd last night was ten times greater than on the former occasion— | owing, of course, to the castigation which I eee to the absentees for their want of attention to Polk—there was not the least disorder or confusion to be seen in any of the departments for keeping the habiliments. Congress ought to make a special | appropriation for supplying refreshments on such ! occasions, so as to keep the fair sex from fainting | in consequence of the oppressive heat of the rooms. | Success to republicanism, say we, if it never show more hauteur among its votaries than was seen at | the President’s last evenin, The Hon John Quincy ‘dams gives a splendid | entertainment to-night. All the leading Oregon men of both parties will be there. Having to write | this epistle, it will not be in my power to attend, but | I may refer to it more fully in my next. The steamers, if; hae will cruise chiefly off the coast of Flori Floridians will have the benefit of fncrtaen ba supplies, and such | like. Mr. Westcott is perfectly justifiable in doing the best he can for his 9 grey iene eta the case is too plain to be taal by beating around the bush in this way. It'was rather an important day in the House. solutions to stop the debate on the Oregon notice on Monday next, at three o’clock. Several hours will then be passed in voting down amend- ments and cross-motions of various nd Ls eg ing to the passage of the resolution. The aly ae rehension with the ultra 54 40 men is, that Mr. jiard’s amendment.conferring a discretionary power upon the President, may be affixed to the proctocol. Our own opinion, however, i is, that the resolution will pass without qualification—a clean and uncon- ditienal resolution for the rendition of the notice. The House would be somewhat more cautious, per- haps, bat for the certainty that the Senate will ap- pend a discretionary or conditional addendum to the resolution. We expect age reat day in the resump- tion of the subject 4 the Senate on Tuesday next. The House will have washed its hands of the busi- ness, and there will be a large accession to the lob- bies of the Senaté from the popular branch, to hear the anticipated grand blow-out of Senator tes and the ex; ion of the case, as also antici from Mr. Calhoun.
