80 hacknied a subject. The debate will probably | be terminated on Monday or Tuesday next. This has been quite a fashionable week in this | city and Georgetown. On Monday evening, one of the regular Washing- ton assemblies came off at Carusi’s, in this city. Tuesday evening, the third of the Georgetown | assembhies§was held at Holtzman’s Hotel. Mr. Bo- | disco, ex-Postmaster General Wicklifle, and other distinguished gentlemen, were present. The ladies | were numerous and besutitol—Alaxadne, Balti- more, Philadelphia, New York and Washington, ured liberal contributions into this rich assembly. ncing was kept up until three o’clock, and Holt | man’s supper was so elegant that it took his guests a long time to dispose of 1t . These Georgetown as- semblies are the pleasantest parties of the season. This evening the President’s mansion was open for visitors. Before nine o’clock, the rooms were crowded to suffocation. There was no dancing. This is annoying to some who used to take so much pleasure in Mrs. Tyler’s hops. The ladies begin to sigh for a restoration of the Tyler dynasty. Gen. Scott and John Wentworth were the tallest men there. The company broke up between ten and eleven o'clock. To-morrow evening a party will be given at John Quiney Adams’, whidh will throw several others in the shade. Besides these larger, there are several other par- ties every night, which still keep the tide of human bliss rolling on. Mr. Niles opposed the bill. Heconsidered it a most extraordinary claim to bring before Congress. Executive session. i} News rrom Auvany.—We received, at an early hour last evening, by Livingston & Wells express, via the Housatonic Railroad, the Albany papers of yesterday morning. We wish the Post Master Ge- neral would allow these enterprising gentlemen to bring our letters. We would then publish our cor- respondence twenty-four hours earlier than we now do. Our correspondent mentioned, the other day, | that he wrote to send by this line, but he did not succeed in doing so; Messrs. L. & W. invariably | refuse to carry letters for any one. Aupany, Feb. 4, 1846. The Senate met at 10 A.M. A bill reported by | the Committee on Grievances, for the relief of a cer- tain canal contractor, occasioned a vast deal of de- | bate as to its reference ; the merits of the application | of the petitioners were enquired into; the bill was order. | ed to a third reading, and referred to the Committee of the Whole. Ata very early hour the Senate went into committee onthe Texas resolutions. The lobbies were completely filled with ladies and gentlemen ; the Senate has become a sort of amphitheatre or arena for the display of superior pusilisms; it is exceedingly edifying, and a visit from New | ‘ork to hear Col. Young on the Texas resolutions, | would be worth the while and the money. Col. Young | ks from yesterday. Order in the | ot even dreamed of; I mean, order in debate. Col. Magnetic Telegraph and the Newspapers— Democratic | }y Organs—The Keystone—Martin's Case—Stocks, $e. A delightful spring day. The magnetic telegraph | between this city and Newark, and from thence by special messengers to New York, has been in compara- | tively successful operation for nearly two weeks. I #1 | comperatively successful operation, because the present | terminus at Newark is at too great a distance from the | Commercial Emporium, and the communication is too | uncertain or irregular, particularly after dark, to induce people to avail themselves of the line. When it shall | have been completed to New York, or carried to Jersey, | City, this means of correspondence will be much more | generally resorted to. At present, a firm is endeavoring to establish a nightly correspondence by specie) | express, at twelve o’clock, to Newark, with what is termed “news” for the papers; but thus far | the effort has proved a most signal failure. The news most of our offices at the time these extraordinary ex- | presses arrive at Newark; and the operators ani ants at the telegraph offices are cept waiting to no other purpose, than to test the facility with which old news can be sent to Philadelphia at all hours. As old news is just as difficult to be sent by the wires as that of a fresher character, the test, of course, works favorably to them; though, I confess, it does not exhibit any great amount of acai lieenee or discrimination in those who furnish it. The fact is, this mode of sending ordinary news never can be adopted by the yee with any pro- fit. It is entirely too expensive, and can never give that fuil and complete intelligence conve reyed by the ch and much more satisfactory method of correspondence by letter. This latter mode has the advantage of giving all tl formation which transpires up to the departure o’clock train for New York, an hour or more after the active business of the day has been entirely concluded. As to local occurrences of an ordinary cha- racter, if what has din the course of the day is time, it seldom becor known till the next morning. Even should it trans; during the evening, it is usually of too unimportant a character to be sent "by. express. It would not reimburse the cost. On the whole, te do not believe the line will be used by the public for any but important intelligence transpiring after the departure of the evening mails, at least, not while the northern terminus remains at Newark; nor do Ibelieve the case will be altered when the line is car- ried into the city of New York. The best method of using the obese is, for the va- jus correspondents of the New peers in this ity, and of the Philedelphia papers in New York, to te out their news up to the d ture of the mail pi- wi lot line, and if any thing occurs o! cient importance up to midnight, for each to transmit it in a telegraphic despatch, id charge the cost to his respective pal ther. this mode the papers will all have the news to the Inlest minute of thelr going to press, ste very” trifln additional expense. I take it for granted that there wi be sufficient private correspondence of a business cha- | racter to keep the telegraph offices open till a late hour at night, and even should that not be the case, the chan- unicetions fro! me of the olaoain - espondents, mal i agerogee, woud induce the compen sens Loner the | watch, an either keep open, or havefoperators to sleep near the instruments, ‘There is considerable commotion among the democra- tic politicians in this city and county, as to which of the newspapers isto be considered the organ of the demo- paper, which they are desirous to make the exc! gan of the democracy.
