married Ladies, tak : i A short time ago we had some business ia: Mori | ( ounty, New Jersey, and while there, we came acros | \ Gold friend of ours, who has recently come into posses" ‘Rot a fine farm on Long Hill, im said county and State, (Wen the same range of hills, and ubout twelve miles trom Bishop Hobert’s old country residence, nine miles rom the flourishing village of Morristown and three from Baskinridge ; ond a more healthy, elevated, beauti_ ful and commanding prospect, or inland view, is not in : New Jersey. Being a widower, and so pleasantly situated, | we naturally asked him why it was, having a good farm and every thing around him so comfortable, he had no wife? Said Re, “my dear sir, advertise and get mea good companion; | am now ready (after being inasingle state nine years) and all things arenow in order.” Now, ladies here isa chance. He is in good health, of a sound con! stitution, @ good looking man, forty-five, a lawyer by profession—at present a gentleman farmer—his disposi. tion amiable, his temper even and pleasant, and is do- mestic. In his religion, an Episcopalian, (but no Pusey- ite) A good democrat of the old Jackson school, has two sons, the first a young merchant in Philadelphia ; the second just of age, a fine young gentlemen, and ac- complished, (and we speak knowingly too, for we all spent several weeks together, summer before last, at Belmont Hall, Schooley’s Mountain.) The widower, above all, is a fine fellow, fond of good old wine, old books, and his Bible his text book, old friends, and cheerful old winter fires, and of a good wife. Now, ladies, here is his description of the wife he wants She must be even tempered, good looking, accomplished! (in the general acceptation of the word—1. e. not toomo- derniyjrefined,) sound in health and constitution—do mestic—a good housekeeper, of the middle size, and weighing from one hundred to one hundred and fifty pounds—her feetures regular—ber teeth sound and naturui—her tongue always eschewing evil, but speak ing well—her feet small, and in the right place—o; good family—alwaye neat and trim at home and abroad —fcom twenty to forty and upwards, and willing at all times to be counselled with and talked to—and, in re" turn, to give advice when necessary, and to be the | mistress of the house and household, always. Her re- ligion of the Gospel standerd—and her politics, (if any) democratic—and, last of all, property, or money, as much as she pleases to bring with her. \f any more information is wanted, call on, or write to us—otherwise, address Mason D. C. Maatin, at his head quarters, the Merchants’ Hotel, No. 41 Courtlandt street, (between Broadway and Greenwich street,) New York. December 1, 1645. P.8.—We torgot to mention that he goes for the | “ whole of Oregon, or none.” MONEY MARKET. ‘Wednesday, Jan.7—6 P.M. , ‘Where wasa general decline in stocks to-day. Nor. 4 wich and Worcester fell off 2 per cent; Erie Railroad 3, | Long Island 2; Canton }; Reading Railread 1}; Vicks- | burg 4 North American Trust }; Morris Canal }; Her. | tem, U. 8. Bank, and Ohio 6's, closed firm at yesterday's | prices. The sales of Reading Railroad were very large. Tv tock market continues very much depressed, and — the difficulties between the bears and the bulls, on the Erie railroad stock, tend to depress the market, and de- | stroy all disposition in the outs: to operate. The | committee to which the Erie railroad question was re- | | ferred, had a meeting this afternoon, with the counsel of both parties, té argue the pointsat issue. This is the only proper way to arrange this matter; it should be cided by the board, upon a report from this committee. It is due to the pumegous operators represented by the members of the old board of brokers, that this, or any | other question arising in the beard, should be settled | there. The confidence now entertained by those for | whom many members act, in the board, is very great; | and the equity that marks all their proceedings, has ' heretofore been undoubted, and on this account every | effort should be made to preserve this reputation. Ano, | ther thing is to be taken into consideration in this mat- | ter, and that is the equality;that should exist among all the members, whenever any decision comes before the | prody for settlement. It is very difficult, no doubt, to | [prevent a member, whose operations are very extensive, | | | and who may from time to time give business to other | | members, from acquiring an influence which, in certain | times, may be of great advantage; but es little of this ‘iaitaence should be permitted to ‘nsinuate itself into de- cisions as possible. Whatever may be the result of this trie railroad affair, it will prove beneficial to stock spe- culators generally, and cornering operators in particu, lar. It will establish a precedent that will, or should, re- | wulate all future disputes, and teach those speculators |having adisposition to get up a cornering operation in any stock, to look ahead, and see if there are any bonds | of the companytin existence. Corners very seldom prove | successful, and the difficulties growing out of this, no matter what the result may be, will be of advantage to he rising generation of balls end bears, and put a veto | upon this sort of stock speculation. It is of more im- portence than many members of the board imagine, that | itm question now before the committee appointed, should be settled at once, one way or the other, by the board.— Many members of the board act exclusively for them- selves, while others represent many outside operators, who have a deep interest in this matter; and it is particu- larly for this reason that the board should not suffer the ‘affair to go out of their hands. | The Merchants’ Exchange Bank has declared a semi_ annual dividend of three and one-half per cent., payable ‘on demand. The Baltimore and Reiste.stown Turnpike Company ras declared a half-yearly dividend of one percent. The Baltimore and Washington Turnpike Company ras declared a half-yearly dividend of one per cent. | The Baltimore and Yorktown Turnpike Company has Jeclareda half-yeerly dividend of one per cent. The Farmers’ and Mechanics’ Bank of Georgetown, D. C., has declared a half-yearly dividénd of three per | vent. | The receipts of the Norwich and Worcester Railroad | ‘Company, for 1845, amounted to $220,808, against $203,- | 100 for 1844, being an increase of $17,308 in 1845. The { net earnings for the year ending the lst inst., amounted | 0 $70,000, which have been ‘appropriated to the exten- | = the road, which accounts for pessing the January | vidend. | The message of Governor Wright gives a very flatter. | a the 30th of September, 1845, the canal debt of the | tate amounted to $19,690,021. Of this amount, $111,385 | 11 due on the lst of July, 1846. The money was deposit” din the transfer office. The interest on the debt | k | F i i E z r 3 i i z g 8 F £ He rents amount to $2,478,901, which reduce the canal debt $17,216,119. Of this, $571,804 becomes due on the Ist lay of July next, being $421,804 of the Oswego canal ock, and $160,000 Cayuga and Seneca canal stocks. If hese liabilities be met by payment, there will remain « palance of the canal debt, unredeemed, of $16,644,816. The finances of the State have been very much bene- itted by the increased amount of tolls this year, compar, ‘1 with last, and have enabled the State to accomplish, what it otherwise could not have accomplished from the sual resources of the State. Within the two years ding July Ist, 1846, an amount of redemptions equal $4,314,090, will have been made. The revenues from he canals, for the last fiscal year, have exceeded those £ 1844, $95,984 88. The expenses, in 1845, exceeded of 1844, $140,169 96. The surplus revenue in 1845 the expenditures, was $114,195 lees than that of the jrevious year. The canal tolls forthe season, in 1846, txcoed these for the season of 1844,/$900,079 26. ‘The devt of the general fund is annually increasing» elt ual to the current charges upon the fund. bi eo a term fund was, st the close of $5,085,640 24 ris debts at tee elooe 5,684,607 63 ing an increase, within the year end- ing 30th Septamber Inst, of ©... 64. ss $251,061 66 Astatement of the liabilities of thie fand for the year, of its means to meet them, showsa deficiency of ose means, on the 80th September last, after applying @ whole balance of money then remaining in the trea’ ry, of $740,151 78. That amount has been borrowed fom, and is due to the ether public funds. he Legislature of Pennsylvania met on Monday. The ‘ate Treasurer is exerting himself to meet the semi- nual interest, due on the Ist proximo, and there is no ubt but thet he will be successful in deing se, punc- sily and in full. The people of Penosylvania have a ‘eat deal of pride in promptly paying the interest on public debt of the State, particularly as it was the at delinquent State to resume, and on account of the | C., Mr. A. F. Acate, | the Execators ay cl \ng account of the finances of the State. It appears tha; | influence its resumption has had upon | the other States. ‘The message of the Governor of Maryland has not had & very favorable influence upon the market value of the stocks of that State. Maryland 6's have declined, in the face of the satisfactory report of the executive upon the financial condition of the State. The money markets, generally, are, without doubt, very much affected by the state of our foreign affairs, and the various reports and rumors that emanate from the seat of government, from time to time, spread consternation and dismay among the financial and commercial classes. There appears to be considerable anxiety to know what course the Senate will pursue in relation tothe policy of giving the year’s notice to Great Britain, for a cessation of the mutual or joint occupancy There is very little doubt but thet the lower House will pasa the resolutions intro- duced by the Chairman of the committee on Foreign Re- lations, by a larger majority than a similar resolution passed the same body last year, but the action of the Senate upon the resolution is very doubtful. There is a division of parties in the upper House upon this ques- tion; party lines are annihilated, and the cliques contain members of each party. It is barely possible that the re- solutions to give the year’s notice, may, when received from the House, meet with a fate similar to that of the same bill last session. This matter will drag alorg through the whole of this long session, and should t seasion close without coming to any settlement of the question, there will be no permanency in any of our business affairs, and a feverish, uncertain, ruinous state of things will exist, that will derange all systems of tra nd be for thetime almost as deplorable as actua! hostilities. The commercial classes, and in fact ali classes, have not, duriog the past twenty years, been sure of any stability or permanency in any of the im- portant measures of the Government from one year to another. The changes inthe tariffs; the adoption and explo- sion of banking systems; the passage and repeal of the Sub-Treasury scheme ; difficulties with foreign Go: ments in relation to claims, boundary, &c., have, from | pa time to time, destroyed the existing Prosperity, and pi duced a state of things from which any interest hardly recovered before it was prostrated by something else, agitated for party or some other purpose. MORE GLORIOUS MOVEMENTS. ANNEXATION CF InDLAND Without Dan 0’Connell. | Ourintelligence last night from Washington, is ot the most glorious and cheering character. Not only is all Oregon or none to be added to the Union, but the everlasting Felix McConnell has made a mo- | tionto annex Ireland to thisglorious Union, without | the big beggarman O'Connell, we hope. The work goes on merrily and more merrily. We'll go ten to one on MeConnell against O’Connell.
