MONEY MARKET. Monday, Jan. 5—6 P.M. . There was a slight dec'ine in quotations for stocks to day. Morris Canal fell off 2 per cont; Farmers’ Loan 3; Ponnsylvania 5’ 1; Norwich and Worcester 1}; Sto- nington 3; Reading Railroad 1; Harlem}; Long Island 1}; Canton 1}; North American Trust and Ohio 6's clos- ed firm at Saturday's prices. ‘The excitement in Wall street before, and for a short time after the Board of Brokers adjourned, in relation to the points at issue upon the Erie Railroad question, was very great. As soon, however, as it was announced that no decision had been mado, the crowds dispersed, and the market resumed its usual quiet state. Atthe | request of one of the receivers, a committee of seven was oppointed, crpsisting of the following gentlemen, to examine into the merits of the case, and report immediately :— | v9 Nevins, chairmen. | reeks, Mr, Gourlie, | Mr. Baylis, | R. We A. H. Dorr, Mr. Parker, There will probably be majority and a minority re port upon the question. At present the result is very doubtful. Both parties are very stro: and very san- guine of success. The opinion of out irs in the street, appears to be favorable to the receivers. Part of the bonds of the Erie Railroad Company have written upon them, “convertible into stock,” while oth” ers have not. The whole amount outstanding is $490,- 000. The original number of shares of the company was 15,000, which has been reduced to 7,600, by sur- rendering two shares of the old, and receiving one new | share. These 7,500 shares, received for the 15,000 | old, are encersed, and known es “consolidated stock.’ | ‘The contracts now in dispute were mde for consolida ted stock, and consolidated stock the receivers demand. | A thousand dollar bond, convertible into stock previous to the Mth of November, would have received ten shares of the old stock, which would have been consolidated on or before the 14th of November, or forfeited. Tax- ing it for granted that it would have been consolidated, the holder would have received only five sharesofcon | solidated stock for his thousand dollar bond, each share | costing, provided he paid par for the bond, two hundred | dollars. It would not be just for bonds converted after | | | i the stipulated time, to be converted upon any better | ries terms than those converted before. The bonds should either be converted into stock, at the consolidated rate: or mot be converted atail. If ten shares of old stock were given for a thousand dollar bond, previous to the 14th of November, a similar bond should now only be entitled to five shares of consolidated stock. This is the only conclusion a disinterested mind can arrive at,in dependent of the points at issue between the contracting parties. The settlement of what constitutes a legal and | just conversion of the bonds of the Company into stock, | would decide what would be a legal tender to the ro" coivers. | Gar This is a very important matter, and may prove to be | } very advantageous to the new stockholders in the Erie | Railroad Company. The difficulties and misunderstand” bgs among the bulls and beers of Wall street may result | j” Telieving the Erie Railroad Company of its outstami- ng bonds, upon the most favorable terms. The Com- peny may cancel its bonds by delivering stock, for which they will receive nearly two hundred dollars per share. ‘The question turns upon whether the Company have a right to issue consolidated stock on their bonds, al par—whether they have « right to issue consolidated stock at all—and whether any new stock they may de- liver, consolidated or not, would be a lawful tender, ac” | cording to the understanding, expressed or implied, when | the contracts were made. | The Bank of Commerce has declared a dividend of | three per cent, payable on demand. | regular dividend of five and an extra dividend of two- | and-a-half per cent, payable on the. 19th inst. Mr. | ies from | Coit eiaEaT HIP gueting ‘The New York “Insuranse Company has declared a | “(tt the great depth of snow onthe rails and the impossibility of using the road buts portion of the time. Had§it not | been for these difficulties, the receipts of the company for the year would have been at least $180,000, and the | increase over 1844 about $40,000. The actual increase for the year was twenty-eight per ,cent, andjat ths same | rate of increase on the same length of roid, the gross re- | ceipts in 1846 should amount to $227,119; but it would be sefe to estimate the receipts of the company for the year | road at about $250,000. In May, this year, the care will run to Somers, being an extension of the road twenty-eight miles into the interior, making the line double its present length, and opening to it a very large local business from the agricultural section through which it passes. Tho road will in May be fifty-three miles long ; thirty miles | more will soon be put unde: contract, and finished be- fore January, 1847, which will give the citizens of New York, before another winter closes the Davigation of the Hudson river, a railroad stretching north from this city towards Albany, at least eighty-three (83) miles, leaving | ‘& space of only about forty miles to cover, to connect the two cities with rails. The New York, Harlem and Albany Railroad, is decidedly a valley road, and the facility and | i economy with which a road can be constructed through this valley, are greater than any other section of coun- | try presents. Asan evidence of the reduced cost of this | road, it is only necessary to state that the twenty-eight | @8)miles now ina state of completion, will not cost, when Placed in perfect running order, about Sifteen thou- jand dollars per mile; and the average cost of construct- Albany, will not average a fraction more than that amount per mile. At this rate, the road from New York to a connecting point on the Western, say at Chatham, a | distance of one hundred and twenty-eight miles from New York, will not cost much over three millions of | The same length of the Western Railroad | dollars. through Massachusetts, from Boston to Albany, cost about eight and a half millions of dollers, makiog a differ. | ence in favor of Harlem of at least five millions of dollars. The Harlem Railroad, from the City Hall to Somers, in | Putnam county, fifty-three miles long, will, when finish- ed, cost $2,112,856, of which $1,160,000 will be in stock | and $962,886 indebt. The interest o1 this amount, hf seven per cent per annum, would be $147,899 92; the | tunning expenses for the whole distance, and repairs, not over $100,000 per annum, making an outlay of $247,890 | out of gross receipts estimated at $250,000. This expen- diture gives the stockholders a dividend of seven per | cent per annum on their investments, and shows thata | very moderate increase in the receipts of the company will meke the road profitable to the stockholdors before it ishalf finished. This statement is so simple that any one not particularly well acquainted with figures and estimates, must understand it at once. We have good | dota for all these estimates, and those made by the Com- pany have invariably been very correct. Notwithstand- ing the very favorable prospects of this Company, the market value of its stock is only about §fty cents on the dollar; or shares, the par value of which 1s $60, are sell- ing at $25} a $26. Thevalue of this stock, asa perme- nent investment, at these prices, cannot be doubted; the company must, sometime witbin the next two years, pay a dividend or reduce their liabilities, which is the same thing to permanent stockholders; and when the connec- tion between New York and Albany, by this road, is com- pleted, it will, without doubt, be one of the most pro- | ductive railroads in the country. vld Stock Exchange. $5000 U8 5s, 1853 100,138 she East Boston Co, 15, NY State 4 8 b90 1534 oe Kencyeky 2 4 Patetvon ts00 RR, Rc 00 Ohio te, 5x 3 Uti R, Sioes Onio ge; ee pesek tee in 2 0. ie a5 150 Nor & Wer, bew x Hed Minos Spr, soo SH 38 So aw - 8 eS ‘ t lo ° 1 5% 5 ds 90 S34 $10000 Penn 5s, opg 69 EJ do bm 64 $i0ene sim 68 400 Reading RR, oe 9 shs Bank State NY, 88 100 ‘90 5a 50 Morris Canal, 20 25 Long Island RR, | 15 do 1 3 ‘do 56% we de i se do P 4500 do 1g 150 do a10 56 Beate, “ik oe soo NAGS 0" $0 Mohawk RR, Saye 500 Farmers’ Trust, a $@ Ston RR, bs ar Bomacn iy Be ihe 50 do 10 Erie RR, : % © do 7 3 do z Bood: hs Mohay i "1 4 100 k, ald 8 “plate Canton Coy aa Nor Wor," Gt 50 do 510 New Stock Exchange. 300 shs Moris Canal, s3 19) 50 shs Cantou Co, cash 3614 % ~~ do 300 cash 3656 50 do 2% Nork Wor, cash 64 do 319% 50 do 10 62 2 do btw 19% 25 = do 63 so do cash 19% 75 © do bs 64 100 Farmers’ Tr, 10 % do bs 6 30 do 3 coi’? bs 4 100 do cash 100 Long Isl RR, a3 . 100 do cash 3B ‘do Fats $0 East BostonCo, 15.25 do 3 8 ER Married.
