MONG cY MARKET. Sunday, Jan. 4—6 P. M. ‘The stock market, so far as transactions are concerned, has been, during the pest week, rather quiet. Thursday being a holydey, the business of the week was derauged, and very little was done before or since. Prices of stocks, generally, were much better at the close than they have been for some time past, and the indications are in favor of an advance for some days. The money market is decidedly easier, and the rate of interest in the streeta little less than it was early in the week. Pri business paper sells at one and a quarter per cent per month, and the banks have loosened the screws a little upon their discount line. Any improvement that may take place in the quotetions for stocks, must be made before the arrival of the steamer from Liverpool, and before the banks begiu their prerarations for the Febru- ery quarterly reports. The steamer will be due about ‘the 2ist instant, and at that time the banks will com- mence their periodical contraction. No one can doubt Dut that the news from Furope, by the steamer leaving Liverpool on the 4th instant, will be of a very warlike character. The message of the President will by that time have been long enough before the people of Great Britain for tho prese to arrive at some point in the pression of public opinion in relation to the Oregon question; but the feeling among the members of the British Parliament, or of the ministry, will not be known in this country until about the first of March ; and from the receipt of advices by the next steamer, up to, and perhaps fora long time after, the receipt of advices of movements in the Parliament of Great Britain, all com- mercial matters must continue in a very unsettled state, ‘and the stock speculators, particularly, will be in a con. tinual state of excitement, from the inflations and de_ pressions in the stock market. Some timo has elapsed since the last war panic prevailed, and things have be, come comparatively quiet. We look for another panic in about three weeks, equal to any of the previous ones. ‘We annex our usual comparative table of quotations for stocks in this market for each day of the week just closed, and at the close of the week previous. In many instances, the closing prices yesterday were at an ed" vance on those ruling on the previous Saturday. The improvement in some of the fancy railroad stocks has Deen very great. Bank, 1; Reading RR. 8} ; Morzis Canal, 24 ; N. Am. Trust, }. The market closed with an upward tendency, and there isa very geod prospect for @ speculative movement for about a week or ten days. The only movement'of intecest going on in Wall street at present, is that in relation to the corner in Erie Reil_ road stock. Some of the wealthiest brokers are short of this stock, and desperate attempt has been made to compromise the difference, or create new stock for de" livery. More of this stock hes been seld in the street than there are shares in the market ; and if it is decided tha, ‘stock created by a conversion of the bonds, is not a lege; delivery, the difference required from the shorts will be imment Some of the most extensive bears in the Erie Railroad, were the heaviest bulls in Norwich and Wor cester; and the result of their operations in Erie, i; likely to be just about as profitable as in Norwich and ‘Worcester. Notwithstanding the great and rapid rise in Norwich, the biggest bulls made very little money by i, on account of a secret division among the bulls themselves, by which the largest operator for & rise was out mancuvred, and experienced seriou, losses at the close of the advance. This corner in Erie is likely to take many thousands of dollars out of the same operator; and between these two stecks, his losses must be very large. Everything depends upon the decisior that may be made by the Board of Brokers to-morrow. Each party is sanguine of success. The party wishing to deliver stock created by converting the ‘bonds of the company, have several precedents to offer in favor of that morement ; while the receivers argue that tho understanding at the time the contracts were made, must be taken in‘o consideration. The price of the bonds, and the price of tke old stock, differs so much that the receivers could not have anticipated any such construction to their contracts as the shorts wish to Place upon them ; but if the shorts can produce any Pre -edents, regulating previous operations of a similar Character, they will establish a strong case. The body before which this case will come, trom the decision of which there is no appeal, have very little faith in prece. dents. lodividual interest, for the time, regulates the vote of each member, and the result, therefore, depends entirely upon the numbers interested for and against. Such is the excitement in Wall street, in relation to this question, that very little business will be transacted, at either Board, in any stock, until the difficulties growing out of this matter are settled. The old Boerd will be occupied nearly the whole session, in listening to argu" mente in favor of and against the points at issue, andthe result will be looked for with the greatest anxiety. Several members of the Union Club ere deeply inter- ested in the decision, as they are receivers cf a large umber of shares. The annexed table exhibits the value and destination of the exports irom this port for December, 1845. Of th® aggregate value of Merobandize exported, nearly two- ‘thirds were shipped to Great Britain and her dependen- cies. Among the items exported to Great Britain from this port in December, there were 78,668 barrels of flour, 58,150 bushels of wheat, 42,160 bushels barley, 130,000 bushels of corn, and 1,362,600 pounds of cheese, valued ‘atj nearly ,one-half the totel export for the month to that country. If the revenue in 1846 from customs should be no larger than in 1846, and the expenditures of the government continue the same as for the past yeer, the surplus revenue will be pretty nearly used up at the close of the present year. We should judge, from pre- sent appearances, that the revenue from customs would | be less this year than last. The probability of the tariff | being reduced will reduce our foreign importations, un- til the question is settled one way or the othier, or Con, | gress adjourns ; and on this account we antieipate a very limited spring importation. The operation of these things will be very favorable. A reduced importation and a reduced revenue at this time are desirable things, as they will make trade generally more healthy, and do away with the opposition, in a’ measure, to the sub treasury scheme. Mr. In- | gersoll, Chairman on Foreign Relations, led off, to- | day, in a temperate, facetious, witty and diplomatic | speech, for the whole of Oregon—and promised that the committee would report the twelve months’ notice by-and-by. Mr. Darragh, of Pennsylvania, | was for “the whole of Oregon, or none”—and | mdulged in a fling at South Carolina; whereupon | Mr. Holmes thought that, while one rifle would do | to shoot down the wolf (Mexico), adozen might | not be too many for the lion (Great Britain). Mr. | King, of New York, went for the whole territory, because it was necessary to preserve something like ja balance against negro slavery. Mr. Winthrop | was for peace—even if peace should require the | | suspension of the twelve months’ notice. Mr. Owen | was for giving the notice. Mr. Baker, (whig) of | Mlinois, took all the wind out of Judge bn | sails. He notonly went for the whole of Oreea but forthe whole continent; and the giving, when | war shall commence, notice to Great Britain, not | only to leave Oregon, but Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and Jamaica. Mr. Baker was all over in a blaze of glory several times during his speech—and must have bee» enrap- | tured with the plaudits of the galleries, from the increased enthusiasm of the gentleman’s indigna- ‘tion against John Bull, at such intervals. Alter which, the House adjourned. One thing. 1s reduced to 4 certainty—the twelve | months’ notice will fe through the House with as | great a majority as the Texas annexation. What will be the result in the Senate, is not so well as- certained ; but we think it will hfe through. And, what will be the result. then ? Why, Great Britain must either come to terms or fight. Tt will have the effect of precipitating a settlement one way or the | other, and whether in the scale of peace or of war, | let us arm the seaboard, and rig the shipping. You may expect to ‘hear of Levin, the native, | flaming away in gallant etyle, next week, for the “Jatitudeof fiity-four forty. “The most beantiful fea- | ture in Ingersoll’s remarke, was the idea that we | should ulumately colonize the whole of Oregon, | North of 49, with Chineee and emigrants from the | island of Japan. He said the: ee le first rate colo- | nists. Levin, we expect, will oldest, to that. Mr. Robert Owen, the (eer ee ese philanthropist, has come to town. House of of Representatives. Wasnineton, January 3, 1846. After the reading of the journal, tne question came up on the Oregon busi left unfinished yesterday. Mr. Cuantes J. Inaunsort made an address of about —— hour on this subject. He said the only thing we anted in Oregon was men and women. The only «thing ‘we can do is to ‘le the country. hildren. The ladies’ gallery, on this @: minutes before, it was a con- stellation of shit stare, but it was immediately turned | into a milky way o! scented cambric. He was not for “masterly activity,” like a dis. tinguished statesman, (Calhoun.) This country was being rapidly settled. Since he roe about two years ago, the population of Oregon bi reased to seven millions. (Roars of laughter.) Seven thousand, sir, seven thousand. No wonder that we should haves little ex- aggeration about Oregon. These men hed more rifles in their hands, and were more in number than England has there, or can send there.
