John Quincy Adams ouT FOR ALL OREGON, TERR ‘ELE + XCLVEMENT FOR ALL OREGON, WAR OR NO WAR Our inteiligence from Washington, last night, is of a deeply important nature. John Quincy Adams, the sage of Quinev, has come out for all Oregon, down to 54 40—war or no war. He goes the whole figure with Mr. Polk, in the White House—Doug- lass, of the Round House—and General Cass, of the Senate. The applause was tremendous at these developments. ‘The House adjourned in terrible confusion—and all parties are in ate of bewil- derment in Washington, We annex all our letters and reports. The following curious letter has just been re- ceived by Colone! Wentworth, of Illinois :— Navvoo, (Ill,) Dec. 17, 1846. Six—On the event of an act passing Congress for the erection of those forts on the Oregon route, suggested in the President's Message, we should be easel! you would exert your influence in our behalf, as we intend to emi rate ‘est of the Mountains in the ensul 1d son. Our facilities are great, and enabled to build them at a lower rate than any other people. | have written the Secretary of War on the subject, and shall be pleased by Bo co operation—also, ier transportation of the mail Your's, ke. BRIGHAM YOU NG, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Hon Joux Wextwortn, M. C., WashingtoneD. C. So, the Mormons join the Oregon crusade, heart and soul. Does Arlington Bennet go also? Jt is now doubtful whether the whigs will not go against Mr. Calhoun and the peace men, and rush headlong down to 54 40—and all its consequences. Great times comin, WasuincrTon, Jan. 2, 1846. The Oregon Excitement Renewed. There was little business in the House to-day, but that little was of great importance. The only item of moment was the speeches on a bill for rais- ing two regiments of mounted riflemen, to guard the route to Oregon, introduced by the Military Com- mittee. Mr. Douglass, of Illinois, introduced the Oregon business generally, and made some eomplaints about the want of enthusiasm on this subject, by those who were so enthusiastic on Texas tll it was annexed. Mr. Holmes said, that if the Oregon bill passed, war was inevitable. But ne i at speech of the day was by John Q. Adums lé was in favor of giving immediate no- tice of the cessation of joint occupancy, and then he would occupy the whole territory. (Lhis was fol- lowed by spplause and clapping” “of hands, which the Speaker could not restrain.) He did not be- lieve war would follow; but if it did come, the whole country would go into it with one heart. He would go as far as he could, if the breath of lite was in him, to make that war terminate gloriously. The House adjourned in gieat confusion. Wasuinaton, Jan. 2, 1846. The Oregon Question—Mr. Adams Straight up for 5440—A Close and Probing Examination of the Reasons Why—Abolitioniem in the Back Ground —War—Anticipated Change of the Balance of Power from the Gain of Canada and the Loss of Texas—Mr. Calhoun and the Administration. “Fire in the mountains—run boys, run.” We are impelled to another stricture upon the Oregon ques tion—a question in the matter of which, like Col- Benton, we are no neophyte, but upon which some new development, some new phase, arises now every day. The controversy, like a long protracted chronic affection, has at length assumed decided symptoms of.an acute disorder, and is rapidly ap- proaching its crisis; and it may yet result in the ne- cessity of a surgical excision, which will hazard the constitution of the patient. hy “ Strange are the vicissitudes of life,” says Judge Stanton, of briaig’h in detailing the history of M’Nul ty; and not less strange, say we, are the vicissitudes of ei ~~ i politicians. The recent position as- sumed ‘alhoun in the Senate, as contrasted with Add Pak taken to-day by Mr. Adams in the House, on the Oregon question, at first blush, would seem to reverse the attitude of these two distinguished men upon the war question of 1812, and of the es Selege of country they repre- sent. In 1812, Mr. Adams was against the war,and so was ale aller Mr. Calhoun was for it, and so was South Carolina Now the case appears to be fairly transposed—the stand of the two great statesmen fairly exchanged, and the issue between them as distinct as an issue can be had upon the question of war or peace. But we intend briefly herein to show that Mr. Adams’s ground on the Oregon question is consis- tent only with his Pn against the South, while that of Mr. Calhoun is just as consistent wi his notions of tree trade economy, the safety of the South and the harmony.of the l nion. Incidentally, to-day, in the House, the Oregon question became the subject of debate. Mr. Doug- lass contended for the right of the Committe on Territories to report a billembracing block- houses, nifle com hey st-routes, Wc., in behalf of Ore- n; whi! ‘aralson claimed that ae aliary, ranch of ioe subject was, properly, the propert the Military Committee alone. Theo speech of Douglass was much of the same ‘ietacgan oa 40 stamp, a thelrte speeches of Mr. Ha in the tSenate. He charged upon the med of South, he absence of that zeal for Prog Me se Phy had shown for Texas, and a fear of ti and of war, ers ei with their bravery against the threats of poor Mexico. The objeciions of Gen. Haralson to the bill of ot Fudge’ ‘Douglase, embracing all the measures recited, an Panteats to the mi- litary branch of the bill, were evidently designed a: ed entering wedge to split the bill into fragments the committees, and thus destroy it. Jud, however, made a masterly defence ot rights the Territorial Committee assumed. ‘Mr. Holmes, following in'the debate, began in a firm and energetic strain to announce to the House his great alarm at the prospect of igre he conceived of the bill from the Ter ~'. torial Committee The members began to cluster around Mr. Holmes, a score or two standing imme- diately bet him, and the number increasing every ans ie dae iv ngereay real’ Met int of order rai rr. C, wna ae to order, and 80 spew . ir, ADAMS Next arose—the Speaker first insisting ' that = oe should take their seats. ad the | vene! octogenarian particularly inquired of the Speaker the nature of wie ga juestion tnd the limit of the debate allowed ing istormee that upon one issue it opened {Piet merits of the question, Mr. Adams took that issue, anda dead si lence prevailed, from the universal s se of the position he was about to disclose upon the line of 54 The suspense was soon terminated. In the course of a clear and eloquent examination of the subject, Mr. Adams expressed the following opi- nions and declarations :— Ist. That the conventions of joint occupancy of Oregon, of 1818 a 1827, were not for a joint occu- es of the soil, but for a joint right or privi fe parties to trade and navigation in the who! the "regan territory; and that mo right to an inch ot the soil had been conceded by either party, through these conventio 2d. From his view of the paramount obligation to the faithful observance of treaties, all measures, such as stockade forta, mounted riflemen, sappers and miners, were out of place; but the first step should be the giving the twelve months? notice, which should have on the first day of the session, and for which he was willing to vote to- day or to-morrow. Here Mr. Wenrwortx rose and moved a sus- pension ot the rules, with a view of introducing such resolution, but was declared out of order.) 34. Thet after tae expiration of the twelve months’ notice, we should proceed to occuny the whole 0% the Oregon territory, up to 54 40. [Great cheering in the House and in the galleries, on Speaker joining in with his oa bring the House to order, but from rapidity of his rap-rap-rape—involuntarily joining in the ap- mag c th He did not believe that. war would follow an rane consequence of the twelve month notice. We could, as Frederick the Great did in Silesia, cocupy, the whole territory, and negotate . afterwards. He hoped in God, that as 1t had been declared, there would oe but one party in the Coum- , in the event of a war, if such a result were to i low, that such would be th e case ; and if so, they not only maintain the whole expel the authorities of Great Britain from the "Can ' adas.
