KEELER & 0., Batter, Cheese Tay | others, are by these presents informed they inust Highly Important from Washington. Our accounts, last evening, are highly important. Notwithstanding the dissatisfaction which the nomination of Hoo. George W. \Woedward (to the office of Jadge of tae Supreme Court) is said to have given the Senators and a portion of the Repre- sentatives from Pennsylvania, it appears that the nomination was not withdrawn, but was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday. By a private corresyondent, we learn that a cer- tain chque of democratic Senators have resolved to oppose Mr. Polk’s administration—to reject his ap- pointments—to defeat all his measures—to throw all his foreign and dumestic policy into confusion—and to drive him and his Cabinet from power and influ- ence, like Tyler and his guard. This combination is supposed to be formed of Calhoun, Benton, MeDuflie, Haywood, Allen, and others. We doubt the report about Mr. Calhoun.— It is certain, however, that there is trouble brewing somewhere, to Mr. Polk's administration. What particular direction it will take in reference to Ore- gon, Mexico, the tariff, or sub-treasury, we know not. In corroboration of these views, we find the fol- lowing ominous article in the Union, of Tuesday night, denouncing this Senatorial combination in advance, as a species of ‘ representative treachery” to the sovereign State: Sevatoriat Resronsteitit: servation for many years past, some one or more of the sovereign States of the American Union have, from time to time, through their Senators in Congress, been grossly misrepresented upon important occasions—misrepre- sented by agents accredited to the national legislature, and bound by the nature of the service in which they are engaged, and by the spirit of our constitution, to see that the will of the constituent body, and not their own will, if it be in conflict, shall be expressed in the coun- cils of the country We think it not altogether improbable that this sort of representative treachery will be repeated in some quar- ter during the pendency of the present “ long session.” This will be the case, no doubt, if opinions ascribed to certain Senators are really entertained, and shall be ad- hered to. Under these circumstances, and with this prospect before us, it would s« that tl “ doctrine of instruc- tion” is spontaneously pre jented for consideration, Wherever cS schief of atorial infidelity is likeiy 9 be felt.—U; All the rumors of expected changes in the Cabinet —of reports relative to the re-commencement and contradictions of the Oregon negotiation—of every other view heretofore given—are now explained. There are in the Senate tour or five prominent can- didates for the next Presidency. It is supposed that they will endeavor, in some way, to upset Mr. Polk and his Cabinet, in order to make room for their own chances hereafter. Whether these move- ments will maintain the peace of the country, or bring it into war, we cannot yet tell—but we will try. According to our _ob- Wasuincron, Dec. 24, 1845) ‘There is trouble brewing in the cabinet, and great inquiry about Mr. Calhoun’s opinions. The Senate have adjourned until Saturday, when they will meet, merely to adjourn and meet on Menday. Allthe nominations have been confirmed, except Dr. Tate, of Mississippi, as Consul to Buenos Ayres. Tate, you know, brought on the commission de- tained by Walker. The Senate Committee are taking evidence from both Thompson and Walker. Walker is endeavoring to throw the blame on Gov. Brown, ot Mississippi. Thompson will certainly be elected Senator from Mississippi The Legislature o. that State meet on the first Monday in January, (the 6th) The election of Senator will take place about the 16th. The nomination of Woodward has created a great sensation among the Pennsylvania delegation. Cameron and Sturgeon, (Senators,) and a majority of the Representatives of that State, are up in arms. They say Woodward is a “‘ Native American,” and a bitter enemy of James Buchanan. Col. Foster, who represents the Westmoreland district, call- ed on #. last night, and told him in honest English, that if Woodward’s nomination was pressed —that is, not withdrawn—and he (B.) did not et once resign, he would denounce him forever as a craven hearted politician. Cameron has agreed to resign, if Mr. Buchanan will leave the Cabinet and take his place. Woodward was the former Speaker of the Legislature of Pennsylvania, and the caucus nomination of the Legislature.— Cameron beat him by whig help. Kavenaugh, chief messenger of the Department of State, is removed. This wasdone yesterday. He will goin as assis- tant, ($350,) and await events. Up to this time, no negotiations have been opened by Buchanan and Pakenham, acting as Ministers Pienipotentiary. They have talked as individuals, but sey have done no more. Things are changing every day. 2 2 The despatches from Slidell contain more in re- gard to the indemnities than any thing else; and this he got from a Mr. Hargous, at Vera Cruz. Culi- fornia is not mentioned, I believe. Much 18 said about what he thinks he may do—nothing of what he has done. Whenhe has been there (in Mexico) afew weeks longer, he wiil find that he is dealing with men who are the best diplomatic deceivers in God’s world—as Thompson, Shannon, and others, have found is the case. ‘ A messenger started yosteray from the President, to inform Texas that she had been admitted. With respect, &c. Wasuineton, Dec. 24, 1845. Gatherings and Gleanings. The Senate yesterday confirmed Hon. Lewis M’ Lane, Minister to England, without any difficul- ty whatever, notwithstanding the objections of cer- tain presses last summer. He isto be instructed, rely upon it, on the line of forty-nine. Mrs. Semple, one ot the daughters of President Tyler, is in town, at Fuller’s Hotel. Major Noland, commissioner of public buildings, so long held in suspense, has to go now, they say, for sure—same of Mr. Hagner—same of Mr. Plea- santon—two auditors at like the French in- demaities, prior to the year 1800, and ever since It is reported to-day that Mr. Read, of Pennsyl- vania, for the Supreme Bench, gives way to Mr. Woodward, who has been nominated. ‘The squabbling about the little places under the Door-Keeper of the House is not yet settled. We phy have seen such ies lor egr anata in all our experience. It is a great pity that Uncl Sam has not offices for all of us. re, 5 Mr. Sloman and his two accomplished daughters gave a concert at the United States Hotel this eve- ning, at which there was a full audience of the élite of the city. The artists gave the highest satistac- | tion to the most critical, and the hardest to please were pleased to-night. A merry Christmas to you. Wasurnaton, Dec. 24, 1845. We shall have war by-and-by—not upon the Oregon question—not with Mexico—not with the West India Islands, for we shall get all we want of these places without war, just for the asking; but we shall have war in the Senate, we rather suspect. An ominous article in this morning’s Union, has an “awful squinting” to this suspicion. It is a leader on “Senatorial responsibility,” making no particu- lar specifications, but perfectly perspicuous to the initiated. Now, we scorn to pounce down, like a vulture, upon every chapter of instructions which ‘the executive oracle may promulge for the mainte- nance of harmony in the family, because such in- structions are sometimes necessary, and in this case they are imperative obligations upon the organ If a wilfully pugnacious defender of the faith steps out of the traces, and he cannot be persuaded or coerced into them when wanted, itis right that he should be admonished of the penalty of disobedi- “Now, we come to the specifications of this indict- ment. The Union, we think, in this article upon Senatorial responsibilities, has in its eye some such distinguished personages as Colonel Benton, An- nexation Bagby, Senator Westcott, and very likely Senator Haywood, of North Carolina, to say no- thing of Messrs. Sturgeon and Cameron, in connec- tion with the questions of the tariff and Oregon — While we Ru Reg La pec pee aos strongly incline to the line of forty-nine, 80 well anguted in regard of the ad valorems; but wherever he will be found, rely upon it, there will Senator Bagby be found also. pice nen bewil- dered, like a man in the woods, on the annexation uestion, and led out only by the it uity of the Great Missourium, we positively believe that if Col. Benton were now to move ana priavion of five hundred thousand dollars to improve- ment of the Trenton Falls, that Mr. Bagby would second the motion, and ane against all the world, the constitutionality of the proceeding.
