\. north of that line throughout the year, and the whole of the business of the towns south of the Jine during the winter months. The business would be free from competition at all seasons of the year, particn- larly from steamboats, so fatal to railroads along the shores of navigable waters, which is almost sufficient to ruin any railroads dependent for sepport upon towns and cities whose harbors a1 accessible, and f equently vi- sited by first class steamers, day and night, throughout the year. ‘The committee very justly observe that this fact of ‘self is sufticient to give the inland route the most decided preference over that contemplated along the Sound to Bridgeport, &c. £ For the long travel between New York and New Eng. land, the route wi uld, in the language of the report, at certain seasons, offer facilities with which no other could compete, as it would secure an inland routs cure from the uncertainties of nd river navigation; from the delays and discomforts of fogs, tides, and all the hazards of winds and waves ; but—through the Harlem Rajlroad—take and leave the traveller at the heart of the city of New York, and not upon outskirts or its wharves. We annex a statement showing the popula- tion, wealth and resources of the various towns on the surveyed route of the proposed New York and Hartford Railroad :— Poputation. Almost eyery town in Con- necticut js a manufacturing p and the people of the interior of that State have long felt severely the absence of rapid and cheap conveyances to market. ‘The con struction of the Hartford and New York Railroad, Danbury, would so divide the Sta a6 to afford facili to all sections, and do more to extend and increase me- nufac uring than any thing else. ‘The towns on the sea- board and a few miles back have facilities enough already for getting (o market, without requiring a railroad. Tho various steamboats running between this city and tho various pots on the Connecticut coast, are sufficient to do all the carrying trade much cheaper than any railroad could ; and it is very doubtful whether @ road run- ning slong the Bound would pay the most trifling divi. dend ; the competition from'steamboats and s ing ves. sels would be more than it could successfully contend Oe Stock Exchange. against. Three hundred gentlemen congregated at thia house thie evening, to celebrate Plymouth Rock Day. Between twenty and thirty members of Con- gress were present, and imany other distinguished citizens. Mr. Fisk said the toast would be responded to by @ song. ME. Dravrow, accordingly sung Mrs, Heman’s beau: tiful poem, the first stanza of which ia a& follows : “The breaking waves dashed high, On the stern and rock: bound coast, And the woods against the stormy sky, ‘Their giant bronches tort * ‘The piece was sung in superb style, after which the band followed with a waltz. Second sentiment— The first Colony of N. England; men of braver spirit and loftier aim, find no records in the | world’s history.” Mr. Fisx said this toast would be responded to by a cl- tizen of that colony. Mr. Weusrex rose amidst the enthusiastic cheers of Though nota native, he was a citizen of ‘egion of country embraced in the scope of the sen- timent. He knew it would be a source ition to the people of Plymouth to learn of this celebration to-night, of the anniversary of the landing of the Pil- | grims, in Washington city. Mr. Webster contrasted the | comforts of this nee with the inclemencies of the winter, to which the pilgrim fathers of New England Wore exposed. | They were not pilgrims, however, like | those described by the good Mr. Watts. They were not “Pilgrims on a scorehing sand, Beneath a burning sky.” Mr. W. then described the rigors of the climate, and the hardships to which the pilgrims fathers of Plymouth were exposed. He next considered the character of the carly Puritans, as given by Hume, the English historien, das it existed in fact, assumirg that Sree injustice historian, and by common preju Predominant in their character, was a love of civil liberty ; tbere was another principle in their character somewhat governed by rigid religious no- | tions; but even here, the love of liberty was pre-eminent. Mr, Webster briefly scanned the great results that have followed from the first germ of New England, the colon’ at Plymouth Rock. Their descendants were throughout the Union and the world; and even here in this city, there were none who were more sincere | than those of its citizens who hail from the sound of | the pilgrim seas. Mr. Webster considered it as highly | honorable to be proud of our ancestors, and emulous of transmitting their fame untarnished to posterity; and concluded with the sentiment, “Success, Prosperity and augmentation of number to the New England Society of | Washington.” [Immense applause.] Music—‘‘Hail to the Chief.” Mr, Fisx then read the 8d Regular Toast. ‘‘ The Descendants of the Pilgrims | —To them has been committed a sacred trust. May they guard with patriotic jealousy the legacy which has been committed to their care.” The fourth toast, — imentary to the laws, as repre- sented on the benzh of the Supreme Court, by @ son of New England, was responded to by Mr. Woopsury, whi jh e general ob: land had other exports than the export of ic | ported men—inen who knew how to rele and sustain, as well as to“ constitute a State.” They carried with them not only the native enterprise inherited from their ancestry, but those principles which led to the estab- lishment of education and religion, ke. Professor Hewitt then sung that beautiful song of the Hutchinson family, to wit: “ We come from the mountai: We come from the mountains, We come from the mountains Of the old Granite State.” The song was received with rapturous applause. The next regular toast “The Emigrants from New England—Their indomita- ble perseverai their hardy virtues, &c., have made the wilderness to smile and blossom, with peace, happi- ness and abundance.” Rrout Von Browuell “yf Mr. Fisx insisted on a response to this sentiment.
